The equipment of the 1st Century B.C. legionnaire became the stereotype of Roman infantry. Over his tunic he wore the heavy lorica segmentata, the most advanced form of body armor at the time. Formally, the Empire of Japan entered World War II with the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, but from 1937, Japan carried out large-scale military operations in China. At the end of 1941, the Japanese army consisted of 51 divisions, which, together with numerous separated units, had a strength of approximately 1.7 million people. More than half of these forces (27 divisions) were stationed in China. The basic type of armed force in the Japanese army was, of course, infantry. Interestingly, in 1938, Japanese infantry divisions underwent an organization, as a result of which most of them (but not all!) Consisted of 3 infantry regiments, and each regiment consisted of 3 infantry battalions. At the division level, the infantry regiments were also joined by staff subunits, an artillery regiment, a cavalry battalion, an engineer battalion as well as transport, communication and medical units. In total, the Japanese infantry division (the so-called B-type) had about 19,800 full-time employees. It is worth adding that it had relatively weak anti-tank and anti-aircraft armament, and its supporting artillery was usually 70 or 75 mm caliber. Artillery units with more than 100 mm caliber artillery were rare. It should also be said that Japanese infantry units were characterized by a very high morale, almost fanatic, with iron discipline, but also (especially after 1942) they were clearly inferior tactically or in firepower to their Allied opponents. It should also not be forgotten that Japanese infantry units have committed a great many war crimes, bearing the hallmarks of crimes against humanity, with the macabre Nanking Massacre at the turn of 1937 and 1938 at the forefront. The F4 Corsair is considered to be one of the most successful carrier-based fighter aircraft to be developed during the Second World War, although, when it first came into service, the technical experts of the U.S Navy considered this large cantilever wing aircraft to be unsuitable for use on aircraft carriers. The Corsair obtained many outstanding aerial victories. In the Pacific Ocean theatre alone, the F4U shot down over 2,000 Japanese aircraft, with a loss of only 189 Corsairs, resulting in a kill / loss ratio which has never been equaled throughout history. This aircraft was produced for ten years, until December 1952, a fact which established the Corsair as the American aircraft to remain in production for the longest period of time after the Second World War. The Hundred Years' War was a conflict between the kingdoms of England and France and a civil war in France during the Late Middle Ages. It emerged from feudal disputes over the Duchy of Aquitaine and was triggered by a claim to the French throne made by Edward III of England. The war grew into a broader military, economic, and political struggle involving factions from across Western Europe, fuelled by emerging nationalism on both sides. The periodisation of the war typically charts it as taking place over 116 years. However, it was an intermittent conflict which was frequently interrupted by external factors, such as the Black Death, and several years of truces. During World War II, Alpini divisions where used on several fronts. In 1942 the Italian expeditionary force was sent on the Russian front to support the Wehrmacht. It included the Alpini Julia, Tridentina and Cuneense divisions. The Italian Alpini took active part at the defense of the Don front but they were outnumbered and surrounded by the troops of the Red Army. The Alpini divisions were forced to retreat with a long and heroic march, in dire conditions, through the cold wastes of the Russian steppe. During the retreat they were also engaged in tough clashes. After the loss of Cyrenaica, Italy requested a German intervention, and in February 1941 the first troops of what was to become the famous Deutsche Afrika Korps led by General Erwin Rommel were sent to North Africa. The troops of the Axis in a few months took back Cyrenaica and Tobruk, and advanced into Egypt. Constantly short on supplies, they were defeated by the 8th British Army at El Alamein. The additional pressure caused by the American arrival in Morocco forced the Afrika Korps to gradually retreat in Tunisia during 1943. The legion was the basic unit of the Roman army. Each maniple was commanded by a centurion, that could be recognized by his leg guards, the vine-stick and the helmet with a transverse crest. The heavy transport-plane Fairchild C-119 served the US-Air Force as a basis for a conversion to a «flying gunship»,. This special construction was especially used in Vietnam for night missions against Vietcong supply lines and troop concentrations. The version AC-119 K was especially effective against truck due to its two 20mm guns and four 7,62mm mini-guns. A further version, the AC-119 G, had lighter armament. Two additional jet engines were mounted to enable the plane to take off from short runways fully loaded with ammunition. With the entry into service of the more powerful AC-130H these aircraft were progressively handed over to the South Vietnamese air force which used them until the fall of the Saigon government.
