Airfix A03021V 1/72 Westlan... $27.95
Satisfying a Royal Air Force requirement for an effective medium support helicopter, when the Westland Puma HC.1 entered service with No.33 Squadron in 1971, it was the first Anglo-French aircraft collaboration of its kind. Possessing exceptional speed and agility, the Puma was capable of carrying 16 passengers, 12 fully equipped troops, or two tonnes of cargo, either carried internally, as an underslung load, or via a combination of the two. An incredibly versatile and reliable helicopter, the latest variant of this magnificent aircraft remains in service with the RAF, some 53 years since those first machines arrived at RAF Odiham.

Entering RAF service in 1980, the mighty Boeing Chinook HC.1 has benefitted from almost constant upgrade and further procurement since that time, and has become an essential component within Britain’s military capabilities. Indeed, it seems as if the only aircraft capable of replacing a Chinook is another Chinook, a situation not likely to change for many years. With the latest Chinooks being some of the most advanced aircraft in the current Royal Air Force inventory, the Chinook Sustainment Programme will ensure these aircraft can continue serving the nation in a way only the Chinook can, for at least the next two decades.

The McDonnell-Douglas (Boeing) AH-64 helicopter was selected as the winner in the competition with Bell's YAH-63 in December 1976. The name Apache stuck to the helicopter in 1981. This highly efficient machine has four-blade rotors driven by two General Electric T700-701 turbine engines with a capacity of 1696HP. The vestigial wings are fitted with conventional trailing edge flaps, and a plate tail improves longitudinal steering. The two-man crew takes seats one after the other in the armored cabin. The pilot's seat is in the rear, and the weapon operator / gunner is in the front. The key to the universal use of the helicopter are the TADS systems on the gunner's stand and the PNVS systems used by the pilot. The TADS is a target-tracking laser marker and rangefinder set and a forward-facing infrared sensor that is duplicated by the normal optics. The PNVS system is a developed FLIR system that allows you to pilot a helicopter just above the ground in order to prevent or delay detection by the enemy's anti-aircraft defense. Apache helicopters took part in the operation in Panama in 1989, during the Desert Storm in 1991, or the last conflict in Iraq (2003). At the end of 1990, the construction of a new version of the helicopter began, equipped with a Martin / Westinghouse Longbow millimeter radar installed above the head to control the weapons. It is used to control the Rockwell AGM-114 Hellfire anti-tank missiles. Technical data: Top speed: 300 km / h; climb speed 12.7 m / s, maximum range (without external tanks): 689 km, armament: 30mm Hughes M230A1 Chain Gun fixed-1 cannon, and outboard armaments - most often Hellfire missiles. The AH-64D Apache Block 2 late type helicopter, which has been deployed by the U.S. Army since 2002, is the subject of this kit from Academy! The main rotor is molded in one piece, and the main hull features delicate rivets and panel lines. The Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk is a medium multi-role and infantry support helicopter of American production with a metal structure in a classic layout with a main rotor and a tail rotor on the beam. The drive of the UH-60 D version is provided by two General Electric T-700-700 engines with a capacity of 1560 HP each. The flight of the first prototype took place in 1974, and serial production, which started in 1974, is still ongoing. It is estimated that over 4,000 copies of this helicopter were built by 2017. The Sikorsky UH-60 was created in response to a tender launched in 1972 by the US Army for a new transport helicopter to replace the UH-1 Huey machines. The new machine was supposed to have better performance, be cheaper to operate and be characterized by high survivability on the battlefield. All these criteria were met by the machine of the Sikorsky concern, with particular emphasis on the last of the above-mentioned elements. Many development versions of this very solid and successful helicopter were created in the course of serial production. The basic version was designated as UH-60A, which was used primarily for transport purposes. Later, the UH-60L version with more powerful engines was introduced, which increased the lifting capacity of the machine. A version of the S-70 International was also created, widely offered - often successfully - to foreign customers. It is worth adding that at present (2017) this version is produced in the plants in Mielec. Numerous specialized versions have also been created, such as the MH-60A, which is dedicated to American special forces. On the basis of the UH-60, the marine version, the SH-60 Seahawk, was also significantly changed. MH-60 helicopters actively participated in the intervention in Granada (1983), the operation in Mogadishu (1993), both wars in Iraq (1990-1991 and 2003), as well as in the operation in Afghanistan from 2001. They have also been exported to many countries, including Austria, Brazil, Chile, Egypt, Israel, Japan and Turkey.

The CH-54A heavy helicopters in Vietnam were mainly used for transport and occasionally for carrying the M-121 high explosive bombs. These bombs were modified with an extended nose fuze to detonate about 3 feet above the ground, effectively clearing forests for helicopter landing sites. One notable operation involved a CH-54A helicopter from Phu Bai Air Base, also known as Camp Hochmuth, in central Vietnam. The US Armed Forces started operating this base in 1963, initially as a communications radio station. The base later hosted US Marines, paratroopers, and special operations forces, and an airstrip was built using M8A1 steel airfield plates. At one point, the airfield also accommodated US Marine Corps aircraft and helicopters. Despite frequent attacks by the Viet Cong, the Phu Bai base remained operational by the US military until the end of 1972. Operation Gothic Serpent In 1988, civil war erupted in Somalia, plunging the country into terror and chaos while combat operations triggered widespread famine. Early 1993 negotiations between warring parties failed to achieve peace. The American command then developed “Operation Gothic Serpent”, aimed at capturing General Mohammed Farah Aidid, a prominent anti-government leader. On October 3, 1993, forces attempted to capture two of Aidid’s clan leaders in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu. The operation involved a special forces unit supported by 16 helicopters from the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, including MH-60L Black Hawks. While the initial capture succeeded, the unit faced intense resistance from rebels and local civilians, including women and children. Two MH-60L helicopters were shot down, resulting in casualties and requiring UN forces in Mogadishu to mount a rescue operation. The engagement would later be described as the most intense close combat American soldiers had experienced since Vietnam. Ultimately, the operation failed to change Somalia’s trajectory, and by 1994, both UN and US forces withdrew from the country. The AH-1G Cobra attack helicopter undoubtedly became one of the symbols of the Vietnam War. Created as a specialized attack helicopter, it began combat operations in the spring of 1967 and immediately demonstrated its high combat capabilities. Equipped with powerful weaponry, the helicopter could engage various types of ground targets using its six-barrel Minigun, 40-mm automatic grenade launcher, and rocket pods and gun containers mounted on pylons. For direct ground support, combat helicopters were often based at airfields as close as possible to the combat zone. To create these airfields, U.S. Army engineering units used M8A1 steel plates for ground covering. The plates were connected either in a checkerboard pattern or in rows, allowing the construction of both small individual pads and large airfields.
