Africa Twin: Like No Other During the late 1980s, Honda's NXR750 ruled the roost in the motorcycle section of the grueling Dakar Rally. Eager to share their success with the public, in 1988 Honda released a replica production model of the bike, named the XRV650. It was the first model given the now-legendary Africa Twin name, and its popularity across the world helped the expansion of the adventure-touring bike genre. While the Africa Twin name was to step back from the limelight for a period as sales halted early in the 2000s, it was never forgotten by afficionados of the genre, and when the it name was revived in 2015 in the form of the CRF1000L, it was cause for celebration. A semi-double cradle frame houses its 998cc, 92hp liquid-cooled 4-stroke parallel twin engine (Japan spec.), with a rugged off-road look provided by the capacious 18-liter fuel tank (Japan spec.) and twin headlights, plus 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wheels. Never Satisfied! Despite having taken the 1983 500cc Road Racing World Championship Grand Prix Riders' Championship (their first since 1967) on the 2-stroke V3 engine NS500, Honda were not satisfied with their motor and felt that more power would be required. Thus, the Japanese motorcycle giant came up with a single-crankshaft V4 design engine which was used in their 1984 entry. It featured a unique aluminum frame to house the engine and a radical layout in which the expansion chambers and the fuel tank were positioned above and below the engine respectively. The bike would go on to compete in road races over the next 19 years, and now appears as a 1/12 scale model in the Tamiya line-up. During the 1983 World Grand Prix season, Honda took the championship with the NS500 but it was clear that the power from the 2-stroke V3 engine would be insufficient for the next season. This led Honda to create the NSR500, which was powered by a more powerful V4 engine. It also featured a unique aluminum frame to house the engine and a radical layout in which the expansion chambers and the fuel tank were positioned above and below the engine respectively. The 1984 season was challenging but the following season saw the NSR500 demonstrate its excellent performance to win the championship. The Tamiya 1/12 model kit faithfully brings all the details of this famous GP bike to hobbyists around the world. Features Length: 166mm, Width: 52mm. The model recreates the early-season version of the bike ridden by F. Spencer. This detailed scale model closely recreates the form of the bike and allows appreciation of the unique chamber and fuel tank layout. The single-crankshaft V4 engine showcases Tamiya's trademark attention to detail. Aluminum frame and complex fuel tank are exquisitely recreated. Vinyl tubing is used to accurately model fuel pipes, accelerator, clutch cables and so on. Cowling, chamber cover and seat parts are attached using fine screws. Authentic rear suspension utilizes a metal coil spring. Comes with a racing stand to display the model. The kit includes decals to depict the bike's markings, in addition to masking seals to aid with painting.

Desmosedici is a compound word made from the Italian for sixteen, "sedici" and the name of Ducati's trademark desmodromic valve design. The DOHC 16 V4 engine is composed of two 90 degree L twin components held together in a tubular steel truss-frame, with swing arm and rear shock pivots directly attached to engine in a truly original fashion. The sleek and powerful bike was piloted in its debut 2003 MotoGP season by L. Capirossi, former 125 and 250cc class title holder, and World Superbike Champion T. Bayliss. The GP4 really showed its stuff during its 2003 debut season, taking 3rd place at Suzuka and winning 1st at Catalunya. Maintaining the same basic structure in 2004, Ducati brushed up everything from the engine to the body to make an even higher performance superbike. While the Desmosedici GP4 had a difficult first half of the season, it began to show results towards the end, with L. Capirossi winning 3rd place in round 15. T. Bayliss also took 3rd in the final round, ending Ducati's season on a high-note, and promising further excitement still to come!
