The True Successor to the Mk.V The legendary Spitfire was the representative British fighter of WWII. Many variants were built and among these was the Mk.VIII, a variant developed to be the replacement for the RAF's previous mainstay Spitfire, the Mk.V. The Mk.VIII was fitted with a Rolls-Royce Merlin 60-series engine, larger radiators, and an air filter as standard. Other improvements included fuel tanks added in the wings, retractable tail wheel, shortened ailerons, and enlarged rudder and elevators. From the latter half of 1943, the Mk.VIII were deployed to the Mediterranean and Pacific Theaters and saw service with RAF, USAAF, RCAF, and RAAF units. Grumman F-14A Tomcat "Black Knights" Ever since its first flight in 1970, the U.S. Navy's F-14 Tomcat has been one of the best top Air Defense Fighter. From 1990, in addition to its role as an interceptor, the F-14A, noted for its long range and superior weapons systems was designated as an air-to-ground strike plane. With this new role, the Tomcat was fitted with a new weapons arsenal. Since 1996, the F-14A employs the AN/AAQ-14 targeting pod, referred to as the LANTIRN. This targeting pod gives the F-14A precision bombing capability by procuring targets for nose-mounted infrared laser or other laser guided weapons. The AN/AAQ-14 targeting pod contains a high-resolution, forward-looking infrared sensor (which displays an infrared image of the target to the pilot), a laser designator-rangefinder for precise delivery of laser-guided munitions, target tracking software, and more. The LANTIRN, combined with GBU-16 and GBU-24 guided bombs, enables precision striking with a minute margin of error from several meters down to tens of centimeters. This precision can be realized at long-range. The VF-154 Black Knights is attached to the USS Kittyhawk, homeported at Yokosuka Harbor, Japan. The Black Knights were formed after WWII, and were deployed to both the Korean and Vietnam War. F-14A were employed with the VF-154 from 1984, and used extensively in Operation Desert Shield during the Gulf War in 1990. The Mitsubishi A6M5 Zero was the Japanese Navy's main fighter throughout the Pacific Theater during WWII. In the latter half of the war, the model 52 Zero, a refined version of the model 22, aimed to take on the ever increasing numbers of high-performance U.S. aircraft. It featured a shorter 11m wingspan with rounded wingtips, was powered by the same 1130hp Nakajima "Sakae" engine as seen in the model 22 Zero, and had the new exhaust propulsion system which gave it a 565km/h top speed. The A6M5 came armed with two 7.7mm machine guns and 20mm belt-feed type cannons on each wing. Deployment of the A6M5 began in the autumn of 1943, and they saw action at the Solomon campaign as well as the Marianas. It fearlessly defended Japan against overwhelming numbers and superior U.S. aircraft up until the very last day of the war. The Dornier Do 217 was a twin-engine, high-wing bomber extensively employed by the German Luftwaffe during World War II. Known for its versatility and adaptability, the aircraft was capable of carrying out a wide range of missions in its various versions, including strategic bombing, surface attack, and night-fighting operations. The Dornier Do 217K variant was specifically distinguished by a reinforced fuselage, redesigned wing surfaces, and upgraded engines. It was further developed to carry and deploy the Ruhrstahl SD 1400 “Fritz X” radio-guided bomb—an advanced and pioneering weapon for its time—mounted on an underwing pylon. With this configuration, the Do 217K was primarily deployed in the Mediterranean theater. On September 9, 1943, the Italian battleship Roma was struck and sunk by a Fritz X off the coast of Sardinia. One of the most famous planes of WWII, the P-47D Thunderbolt was an outstanding single seat fighter plane excelling in high-altitude bomber escort and low-altitude ground attack. The P-47D featured a turbo-supercharged engine and was active on both the European and Pacific fronts. To solve the problem of insufficient visibility of earlier models, later Thunderbolt models were redesigned with a transparent bubble canopy, leading to the birth of the "Bubbletop". Following the successful release of the P-47D "Razorback", Tamiya now introduces its successor, the "Bubbletop" to the 1/72 scale War Bird Collection. During the first half of the Second World War, the Messerschmitt Bf109 E was the main fighter of the German airforce. The E-4 housed a 1,100hp Daimler Benz DB 601Aa engine and was armed with two 7.92mm machine guns on the nose, as well as a 20mm cannon on each wing. For some aircraft, bullet-proof glass was used to reinforce the front of the canopy. In addition, a 20mm canon, which ran through a tube in the propeller was supposed to be installed but was unsuccessful. Displaying superb acceleration and diving ability, the E-type planes overpowered the RAF's Hawker hurricane and equaled the Spitfire fighters in the Battle of Britain. However, with a flight range of only 560km, the E-4 planes were limited to just fifteen minutes of combat over British skies. Thus, the bombers were not given sufficient support and sustained heavy damage. As a result, the Luftwaffe's strategy to bomb England into surrender ended in failure. To deal with this drawback, the E-4 planes were equipped with additional 300L fuel tank. These improved fighters, called E-7, were first deployed at the end of 1940. After the Battle of Britain, the E-4/7 planes were sent to the front lines of Northern Africa. As the Bf109 F-type fighter's production was advanced, the E-4/7 was retired from the front lines. However, some veteran pilots continued to use the E-4/7 mainly for ground support duty until the summer of 1942. The F/A-18E/F Super Hornet is an advanced successor to the F/A-18C/D. Additionalfuel tanks were added to increase range. The fuselage was extended by 86 cm, and fuel was also loaded into the vertical stabilizer. The resulting weight increase was compensated for by engines with increased thrust, and the engine changes also resulted in larger intakes. The angular parallelogram-shaped intakes are one of the aircraft's distinctive external features. The aircraft's structure was significantly altered, with the wings extended and the wing area increased to increase lift. Other than that, only some electronics and power systems were updated, and the aircraft is shared with the F/A-18C/D. The Isshiki Rikujō Kōgeki ki (Isshikirikkō), or Type 1 Land-Based Attack Aircraft, was more widely known as the G4M (Allied reporting name "Betty"). It was widely used by the Japanese Navy during WWII, as was particularly notable for contributing to the sinking of the British battleship Prince of Wales and battlecruiser Repulse near the beginning of the war. This kit accurately reproduces the Model 11, or G4M1, variant of this bomber, including its rotund, cigar-shaped fuselage. The flaps, engine cowl flaps, dorsal gun position, and upper part of the front canopy can all be assembled in either open or closed positions. Parts for a Type 91 torpedo, twelve 60kg bombs, and three crew figures, as well as six marking options are also included.

The JSF Joint Strike Fighter program was a developmental project to create a new 5th generation all-weather multirole combat aircraft to replace the existing American and NATO strike-fighter force. The aerospace industry team led by aircraft manufacturer Lockheed Martin, created the single-seat, single-engine F-35 Lightning II. The JU-87 dive bomber is certainly one of the most famous airplanes of World War II. This characteristic “inverted gull wing” aircraft became famous at the early stage of the war and it can be considered, together with the Wehrmacht Panzer Division, the symbol of the “Blitzkrieg”. The Italian Regia Aeronautica requested to the German ally, before the beginning of the war, a specific supply of one hundred “Stuka” to equip its ground attack and dive bombing Squadrons. The first Ju-87B units arrived in the summer of 1940 and went to equip the 96º Gruppo Bombardamento a Tuffo. The Ju-87, either in the B2 version or in the extender range R2 version, equipped other “Gruppi di Volo” for a total of 150 planes. The Italian “Stuka”, nicknamed “Picchiatello”, was used by Regia Aeronautica over Malta, in North Africa, in the Balkans and in the Mediterranean Theatre. The Lockheed Martin-Boeing F-22 is a 5th generation USAF stealth fighter aircraft. Extremely innovative in concept and design, the “Raptor” is equipped with two Pratt & Whitney F119 turbofan engines, with afterburners capable of generating vector thrust via its exhaust nozzles. The "stealth" capability is provided through the aerodynamic profile and the use of "hi-tech" materials capable of minimizing radar detectability. Evasion capability is further aided by detailed design engineering of the air intakes and exhausts to reduce heat generation from exhaust gases and also noise emission reduction. The air-to-air and air-to-surface armament systems are installed in loading bays within the fuselage in order to further minimize radar detection. The introduction of the Macchi MC 202 Folgore was a significant development for the fighter squadrons of the Italian Regia Aeronautica. Stylishly designed from an aerodynamical perspective, it was fitted with the powerful German DB 601 engine produced under license by the Italian aeronautical industry. The engine and overall aeronautical performance of the aircraft provided the Regia Aeronautica with a fighter capable of actively engaging Allied fighters. The flight performance compared to the previous generation of fighters equipped with radial engines, such as the Fiat G-50 and the Macchi Mc-200, was in fact much better. Manoeuvrable and fast (it was able to reach 600 km h), it was armed, in the early versions, with two 12.7 mm Breda-SAFAT machine guns installed in the nose. Only in later versions were the armaments improved with additional machine-guns installed in the wings. The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 was one of the best aircraft produced during World War II. Manufactured in more than 20,000 units starting from 1941, it was, alongside the Messerschmitt Bf 109, the most renowned fighter aircraft of the Luftwaffe. In its early versions, such as the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 A-8, the fighter was equipped with a BMW 801 D-2 double-row radial engine with 14 cylinders, delivering 1,700 horsepower, enabling it to reach a top speed of 653 km/h. Over time, designers capitalized on the successful aerodynamic structure of the aircraft, achieving what can be considered its ultimate evolution. The adoption of the powerful liquid-cooled Junkers Jumo 213 12-cylinder engine necessitated a revision of the aircraft's design, resulting in an elongated nose. The D version was aptly nicknamed by Luftwaffe pilots as "Langnasen-Dora" (Long-nose Dora), but once in flight, they immediately appreciated its characteristics and capabilities. The FW-190D was indeed capable of competing on equal terms with the most modern Allied fighters, such as the renowned P-51D Mustang.  The Boomerang was the only indigenous-built Australian fighter aeroplane to saw service during the Second World War. Boomerangs defended Australia and were also deployed to New Guinea and other Pacific islands. The last fighter-recce version, designated CA-19, carried a photo camera behind the cockpit and mainly flew recon missions or marked potential targets for larger fighter bombers.
