Linear-A 089 1/72 Roman Ballista

The Roman Empire's army was known primarily for its excellent infantry, held together by iron discipline. However, this excellent infantry was often supported in battle by a wide range of non-firearms artillery, which was used both during sieges and in open battle in the field. In the case of a city siege, the weight and mobility of individual machines played a lesser role, hence the widespread use of classic catapults, most often referred to as "onager," ballistae, and even variations on a device invented in the Greek world called the lythobolos, used to fire stone balls in a horizontal or curved trajectory. Of course, these are only examples of Roman siege engines. In the field, however, a device called the scorpio, also known as the skorpion in Polish, was frequently used. It was a relatively light and mobile ballista adapted to fire arrows/bolts. It's worth noting that scorpions are documented in sources as early as the 1st century BC. It's also worth noting that the Roman army during the Principate also used other types of non-fire artillery, such as machines called carroballista and manuballista
