Although now featuring 990cc 4-stroke engine bikes, prior to 2002 the top class of the World Motorcycle Grand Prix was the GP500, featuring bikes restricted to 500cc engines capable of producing a maximum 150hp. In the 1980's Honda and Yamaha dominated the GP500, with Honda racing their legendary NSR 500. Honda's 2-stroke V4 engine loaded NSR 500 made her first appearance in the GP500 in 1984. After a disappointing debut season the NSR 500 lived up to all expectations in 1985, with former world champion Freddie Spencer taking out his second world title. In 1986, whilst the NSR 500 was in the capable hands of Wayne Gardner in the GP500 class, in Japan it flew the famous Honda racing team colors in the domestic All Japan Road Race Championship. Burdening high expectations for instant success, by round 3 champion Honda rider Keiji Kinoshita and the NSR 500 had already formed a formidable combination. Drawing out the full potential of the powerful 2-stroke 499cc V4 engine, the Kinoshita-NSR 500 combination clock d the fastest time in qualifying to go on and win Honda's first race of the season. Taking out a second consecutive win in round 4, Kinoshita had already climbed to the top in the riders championship. Holding the lead for the rest of the season, Kinoshita took out his first title in 5 years and Honda their first ever domestic title in the 500cc class. Improving with every season, the legendary NSR 500 continued to be used at the top racing level until the arrival of the revolutionary 4-stroke 990cc RC211 V in 2002.

Desmosedici is a compound word made from the Italian for sixteen, "sedici" and the name of Ducati's trademark desmodromic valve design. The DOHC 16 V4 engine is composed of two 90 degree L twin components held together in a tubular steel truss-frame, with swing arm and rear shock pivots directly attached to engine in a truly original fashion. The sleek and powerful bike was piloted in its debut 2003 MotoGP season by L. Capirossi, former 125 and 250cc class title holder, and World Superbike Champion T. Bayliss. The GP4 really showed its stuff during its 2003 debut season, taking 3rd place at Suzuka and winning 1st at Catalunya. Maintaining the same basic structure in 2004, Ducati brushed up everything from the engine to the body to make an even higher performance superbike. While the Desmosedici GP4 had a difficult first half of the season, it began to show results towards the end, with L. Capirossi winning 3rd place in round 15. T. Bayliss also took 3rd in the final round, ending Ducati's season on a high-note, and promising further excitement still to come!

Eager to share their success with the public, in 1988 Honda released a replica production model of the bike, named the XRV650. It was the first model given the now-legendary Africa Twin name, and its popularity across the world helped the expansion of the adventure-touring bike genre. While the Africa Twin name was to step back from the limelight for a period as sales halted early in the 2000s, it was never forgotten by afficionados of the genre, and when the it name was revived in 2015 in the form of the CRF1000L, it was cause for celebration. A semi-double cradle frame houses its 998cc, 92hp liquid-cooled 4-stroke parallel twin engine (Japan spec.), with a rugged off-road look provided by the capacious 18-liter fuel tank (Japan spec.) and twin headlights, plus 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wheels.
