The early type 5-gallon / 20-litre Jerry Can was one of the most important pieces of logistical equipment used by military forces during the Second World War. The design was based on the original German fuel container developed before the war and was quickly copied by the Allies due to its exceptional practicality. The 1942 production versions featured a strong steel construction, pressed reinforcement panels on the sides, the distinctive three-handle design for easier carrying, and a capacity of approximately 20 litres. These containers were mainly used for storing and transporting petrol, diesel fuel, and other essential fluids.
Because of their simplicity, durability, and ease of use, Jerry Cans became standard equipment for armies on many fronts of the war. They could be stacked efficiently, transported in vehicles, and filled or emptied quickly without requiring special tools. Early 1942 examples were widely used by Allied forces during campaigns in North Africa, Europe, and the Pacific, and the basic design remained in service long after the end of World War II.
