The Westland Wessex HC.2 was a licence-built turbine-powered development of the classic American Sikorski S-58 ‘Choctaw’ helicopter, one of the world’s first truly capable helicopters which established these aircraft as essential for a host of military and civilian applications. The continuation of an existing arrangement between Sikorsky and Westland, the Wessex was initially developed for the Royal Navy in the anti-submarine and utility roles but was further developed as the HC.2 for the Royal Air Force, entering service in 1962, a year later than the Navy machines. In RAF service, these powerful helicopters performed several roles, including troop and supply transportation, ground support and air evacuation duties. However, it was their use as Air Sea Rescue helicopters which made these some of the highest-profile aircraft in service at that time. The Wessex represented the pinnacle of rotary technology when introduced and could operate from, and into places that other aircraft couldn’t.

Satisfying a Royal Air Force requirement for an effective medium support helicopter, when the Westland Puma HC.1 entered service with No.33 Squadron in 1971, it was the first Anglo-French aircraft collaboration of its kind. Possessing exceptional speed and agility, the Puma was capable of carrying 16 passengers, 12 fully equipped troops, or two tonnes of cargo, either carried internally, as an underslung load, or via a combination of the two. The Brantly B-2 is an American two-seat light helicopter produced by the Brantly Helicopter Corporation. After the failure of his first design, the Brantly B-1, Newby O. Brantly decided to design a simpler and less complicated helicopter for the private buyer. The B-2 had a single main rotor and an anti-torque tail rotor and first flew on 21 February 1953. This was followed by an improved second prototype that first flew on 14 August 1956. The B-2A was introduced with a modified cabin, and the B-2B had a larger 180 hp fuel-injected engine. The B-2B has a three-bladed articulated main rotor and an all-metal fuselage, it can be operated with skid, wheel or float landing gear. The piston engine is fitted vertically in the fuselage behind the cabin.

The Hughes OH-6A Cayuse is a light observation helicopter developed for the United States Army as part of the Light Observation Helicopter (LOH) programme. Designed and manufactured by Hughes Helicopters, the OH-6A became widely known by its nickname “Loach” (Light Observation Helicopter) and earned a strong reputation for agility, reliability, and survivability. Featuring a compact fuselage and a powerful turboshaft engine, the OH-6A offered exceptional manoeuvrability and a small visual and radar signature, making it ideal for reconnaissance, target acquisition, liaison, and command support roles. Its excellent low-speed handling and ability to operate close to the ground allowed crews to observe enemy activity in challenging environments, particularly during the Vietnam War. The helicopter could be flown unarmed or fitted with light weapons such as machine guns or rocket pods, depending on mission requirements. Its versatility also extended to medical evacuation, artillery spotting, and escort duties when operating as part of hunter-killer teams alongside armed attack helicopters. The OH-6A Cayuse became one of the most iconic light helicopters of its era, influencing later observation and scout helicopter designs and remaining a symbol of airborne reconnaissance operations during the Cold War period.

The Z-19 is a Chinese light scout and attack helicopter. It was locally developed by Harbin. The Z-19 is esentially a tandem-seat version of the Z-9W, which in turn is a license-built version of the Eurocopter AS365 Dauphin. However this helicopter also shares some resemblance with the Japanese OH-1. The Z-19 made its first flight in 2011 and was publicly revealed in 2012. This helicopter is in service with Chinese army aviation regiment. It operates alongside the dedicated Z-10 attack helicopter. The Z-19 is lightly armored. Both pilots are seated on crash-resistant seats. This scout and attack helicopter is equipped with a nose-mounted FLIR, TV and laser rangefinder. The McDonnell-Douglas (Boeing) AH-64 helicopter was selected as the winner in the competition with Bell's YAH-63 in December 1976. The name Apache stuck to the helicopter in 1981. This highly efficient machine has four-blade rotors driven by two General Electric T700-701 turbine engines with a capacity of 1696HP. The vestigial wings are fitted with conventional trailing edge flaps, and a plate tail improves longitudinal steering. The two-man crew takes seats one after the other in the armored cabin. The pilot's seat is in the rear, and the weapon operator / gunner is in the front. The key to the universal use of the helicopter are the TADS systems on the gunner's stand and the PNVS systems used by the pilot. The TADS is a target-tracking laser marker and rangefinder set and a forward-facing infrared sensor that is duplicated by the normal optics. The PNVS system is a developed FLIR system that allows you to pilot a helicopter just above the ground in order to prevent or delay detection by the enemy's anti-aircraft defense. Apache helicopters took part in the operation in Panama in 1989, during the Desert Storm in 1991, or the last conflict in Iraq (2003). At the end of 1990, the construction of a new version of the helicopter began, equipped with a Martin / Westinghouse Longbow millimeter radar installed above the head to control the weapons. It is used to control the Rockwell AGM-114 Hellfire anti-tank missiles. The CH-54A heavy helicopters in Vietnam were mainly used for transport and occasionally for carrying the M-121 high explosive bombs. These bombs were modified with an extended nose fuze to detonate about 3 feet above the ground, effectively clearing forests for helicopter landing sites. One notable operation involved a CH-54A helicopter from Phu Bai Air Base, also known as Camp Hochmuth, in central Vietnam. The US Armed Forces started operating this base in 1963, initially as a communications radio station. The base later hosted US Marines, paratroopers, and special operations forces, and an airstrip was built using M8A1 steel airfield plates. At one point, the airfield also accommodated US Marine Corps aircraft and helicopters. Despite frequent attacks by the Viet Cong, the Phu Bai base remained operational by the US military until the end of 1972. The Sikorsky S-64E Skycrane is the civilian version of the CH-54A Tarhe heavy twin-engine military helicopter. The military variant was widely used during the Vietnam War to transport heavy cargo, from artillery guns to combat boats. The S-64E features a six-blade rotor and two Pratt & Whitney engines. It has an all-metal fuselage and a three-seat crew cabin with two side-by-side pilot seats and a separate operator’s seat. The operator’s seat faces backward at a 180° angle, allowing monitoring of cargo through the transparent rear wall during loading operations. The AH-1G Cobra attack helicopter was developed by company Bell as part of the program to create a specialized attack helicopter. In the fall of 1967, it began to be used in Vietnam, where demonstrated its high combat qualities. To defeat ground targets, AH-1G helicopters used both built-in weapons – a six-barreled machine gun or grenade launcher – and suspended: units of unguided missiles, suspended machine guns, and later – a six-barreled 20 mm gun. Its firepower allowed hitting even armored targets. Over time, the AH-1G received a number of improvements, including measures to counter surface-to-air missiles with thermal guidance. For this, cooling of the engine exhaust gases was used, in addition, a special pipe was installed on the helicopters, which diverted the hot gases upwards, into the plane of rotation of the main rotor. After the end of the war, AH-1G Cobra helicopters continued their service in units stationed in Western Europe. Operation Gothic Serpent In 1988, civil war erupted in Somalia, plunging the country into terror and chaos while combat operations triggered widespread famine. Early 1993 negotiations between warring parties failed to achieve peace. The American command then developed “Operation Gothic Serpent”, aimed at capturing General Mohammed Farah Aidid, a prominent anti-government leader. On October 3, 1993, forces attempted to capture two of Aidid’s clan leaders in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu. The operation involved a special forces unit supported by 16 helicopters from the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, including MH-60L Black Hawks. While the initial capture succeeded, the unit faced intense resistance from rebels and local civilians, including women and children. Two MH-60L helicopters were shot down, resulting in casualties and requiring UN forces in Mogadishu to mount a rescue operation. The engagement would later be described as the most intense close combat American soldiers had experienced since Vietnam. Ultimately, the operation failed to change Somalia’s trajectory, and by 1994, both UN and US forces withdrew from the country. The AH-64 Apache can be considered the most famous attack helicopter in history.
