The end of the Second World War saw victorious Allied nations desperately attempting to secure details of German jet technology and high-speed research data which could be applied to their own jet projects. The Soviet Union used information and engine technology obtained from Britain to introduce the diminutive Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-15 in 1949 - one of the most capable of the early jet fighters. Even as this aircraft proved effective during the Korean War, the Soviets were already working on its successor. The larger and faster Mig-17 Fresco may have looked like a larger incarnation of its predecessor, yet this was a completely redesigned aircraft, incorporating many improvements over the MiG-15 and a significant upgrade in Soviet jet capability. The MiG-17 was designed to perform the role of bomber killer and was never intended as a dogfighter. However, its exceptional agility would allow this aircraft to score combat victories over much heavier and more modern American designs. The Vietnam War was a sobering experience for the US Air Force, as some of their modern aircraft fell victim to the guns of the MiG-17. Lighter and much more manoeuvrable than the US aircraft, the subsonic MiG-17 claimed victories over aircraft like the F-105 Thunderchief and McDonnell Douglas Phantom, resulting in the US developing new agile air superiority fighters. Possessing excellent performance, and being cost-effective and easy to maintain, the rugged MiG-17 was produced in large numbers. It became the standard Warsaw Pact fighter from the mid-1950s and for the next decade, with aircraft produced under licence in both China and Poland. It was an attractive fighter option for many of the world's smaller air forces and more than thirty overseas nations eventually operated the type. Perversely, for a nation against which the MiG-17 was designed to combat, America became home to significant numbers of these aircraft, most coming into the hands of private collectors but a small number used in dissimilar aircraft trials and to perfect combat techniques against smaller, more agile jet fighters. Two beautifully restored examples have also been popular display performers on the US Airshow circuit over the years.

Arguably the most important Luftwaffe fighter aircraft of the Second World War, The BF109 was designed by Professor Willy Messerschmitt. The prototype first flew in May 1935. After winning a design competition against entries from Arado, Heinkel and Focke-Wulf due to its higher speed and better manoeuvrability, it entered service as the Bf109 A-0 in 1937. Early versions were flown by the Condor Legion in the Spanish Civil War, and the Luftwaffe during the Invasion of Poland. The Bf109 E appeared in late 1938 as the first major update of the design. The Junkers Jumo 210 engine used in the earlier versions was replaced by the larger, more powerful Daimler Benz DB601. The extra heat generated needed improved radiators, which were moved from the nose to the modified and reinforced wings. The Bf109 E became a symbol of the Luftwaffe in the skies over England, dogfighting the RAF’s Spitfires and Hurricanes. During 1940, Messerschmitt engineers were working on the Bf109 F, which featured the DB601E engine and much improved aerodynamics. The wings were reduced in area, with the new rounded wingtips being seen on all subsequent Bf109 variants. The tailplane was redesigned to eliminate the supporting struts, and fuel capacity was increased to extend the range to 1,060 m (1700km). The Bf109 F entered service in October 1940. The DB605 engine was developed to be easier to manufacture than the complex DB601E. Increasing the displacement and compression ratio raised the power output to 1455bhp. The Bf109, when fitted with this engine, became the Bf109 G “Gustav”. The pressurised Bf109 G-1 began production in February 1942, with the non-pressurised Bf109 G-2 following in May 1942. In February 1943, the nose-mounted 7.92mm MG 17 guns were upgraded to the 13mm MG 131, leading to the distinctive bulged engine cowlings of the G-5 and G-6 models. The G-5 and G-6 were the most produced Bf109 variants, with over 12,000 aircraft manufactured. The high-altitude G-5 featured a pressurised cockpit, with an engine driven compressor and sealed canopy glazing.  The Bf109 G could be fitted with two additional MG151/20 cannon in under-wing gondolas, as well as a 300l fuel tank, rockets and bomb racks. Tropical equipment allowed the Bf109 G to serve in the dusty conditions of North Africa. The G-6 first equipped JG 27, 51, 53 and 77 in the Mediterranean theatre, and went on to equip many Luftwaffe fighter units in Western Europe and the Eastern Front, where the highest scoring fighter ace, Erich Hartmann, achieved a claimed 352 aerial kills. When it comes to specially presented RAF Typhoon FGR.4 display aircraft of the past 10 years, the one which served the longest on the UK airshow circuit, and was unquestionably the most patriotic in appearance was ZJ914. Resplendent in a smart all-over black Aggressor scheme, the aircraft also benefited from union flag style markings and an RAF roundel on each side of its tail, and no matter what the weather, when this aircraft displayed with afterburners engaged, it was an aviation sight to behold. The scheme was similar to the one worn by the RAF Shorts Tucano T.1 display during the 2008 season, which also had a black airframe, with red, white and blue detailing to mark the 90th anniversary of the Royal Air Force. Two Tucanos were presented in this manner: ZF210 and ZE338, with one serving as a reserve should the assigned display aircraft become unserviceable. The Tucano was the RAF’s basic training aircraft for 30 years, prior to its service withdrawal in 2019. In the continuation of a now popular tradition, Typhoon ZJ914 also inherited a name by which all enthusiasts referred to her, as she became ‘Blackjack’. The aircraft wore this popular scheme for three full display seasons and even throughout the early months of display work up to the 2024 airshow season. So, is it any wonder that ‘Blackjack’ became one of the most popular aircraft to have represented the Royal Air Force during the 21st century? Mikojan-Guriewicz MIG-23 is a Soviet, single-engine fighter-attack aircraft with variable wing geometry, with a classic tail. The flight of the prototype took place on June 10, 1967, and shortly thereafter, it lasted until 1985. The MIG-23 was clearly influenced by the design of the French Mirage G, although the MIG-21PD machines were initially tested, with the MIG-21 wing, R-27-300 engine and RD-36-35 auxiliary starters placed vertically in the fuselage. The origins of the Tornado design date back to 1968. It was then that the trinational PANAVIA consortium was established in order to implement the project known as MRCA (Multi-Role Combat Aircraft). On September 14, 1974, the flight of the first prototype took place and the construction of the first 640 ordered aircraft began, with production split in such a way that Germany and Great Britain each completed 42.5%, and Italy 15% of the order. Tornado fleets are currently the most important part of the air force of three European NATO countries. They remain in the composition of the air forces of Great Britain (Royal Air Force), Italy (Aeronautica Militare Italiana) and Germany (Luftwaffe) and in the aviation of the German Navy (Marinefliege). In addition, in 1986, a number of these aircraft were ordered by Saudi Arabia and incorporated into its armed forces (Royal Saudi Air Force). There are three main versions of the aircraft: Tornado ECR, Tornado ADV and Tornado IDS. Tornado ECR is a German / Italian reconnaissance version, it can carry Raytheon AGM - 88 HARM anti-radar missiles. In addition, they carry AIM-9L Sidewinder missiles for self-defense purposes. The Tornado ADV is a version of the interceptor, equipped with the great Marconi-Ferranti Foxhunter radar with a range of up to 190km and able to track up to 20 targets simultaneously. The Tornado IDS, on the other hand, is an assault bomber designed primarily to support land forces. Long-range patrol bomber flying boat developed by the Glenn L. Martin Aircraft Company during World War II for the US Navy for anti-submarine warfare patrol (ASW) and US Coast Guard for search and rescue duties (SAR). The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt is an American, single-engine fighter and fighter-attack aircraft, built in a low wing configuration with a classic tail. Considered one of the best American fighters of World War II. The flight of the prototype took place in 1941, and serial production continued in the years 1942-1945. The P-47 can be described as the workhorse of the US Air Force in both Europe and the Pacific. Although the 2000HP R-2800 Double Wasp engine, turbine and exhaust system made the plane very large and heavy, it was not a barrier to achieving great performance. The F-86 was the first mass-produced fighter capable of exceeding the speed of sound. The North American F-86 Saber was the U.S. primary fighter during the Korean War that was able to compete and successfully fight the Mig-15. It is estimated that the ratio of combat losses of both these machines is 2: 1 in favor of the American machine. The McDonnell-Douglas F2H Banshee is an American, twin-engine, on-board fighter-bomber and reconnaissance aircraft. The flight of the prototype took place on January 11, 1947, and the machine entered service from 1948. It was powered by two Westinghouse J34-WE-34 jet engines with a thrust of 14.5kN each. The F2H Banshee served in the US Navy from 1948 to 1959 and, together with the F9F Panther, was the US Navy's primary deck fighter during the Korean War. A total of nine versions of this aircraft were created, of which only two (F2H-2P and F2H-3P - both versions are photographic reconnaissance aircraft) performed different tasks than fighter or bombing. The planes served in the US Navy and in the Marine Corps. Canada turned out to be one foreign recipient. In total, 895 F2Hs were built. Mikojan-Guriewicz MIG-27 (NATO: Flogger) is nothing more than a developed version of the MIG-23 aircraft, having the nature of an assault machine. Successively developed variants of that aircraft gradually differed more and more from the original design, and finally the designation of the MIG-23BK model was replaced with a new one - MIG-27K. In addition to the K specification, three other MIG variants were produced 27: the M version, which is in fact a simplified K version, the D version - i.e. older machines rebuilt to the M standard, and the L version - produced under license in India, called there Bahadur, i.e. the Brave. A total of just over 1000 MIGs 27 were produced. The power unit was the Khachaturov R-29B-300 engine. The Lockheed T-33 Shooting Star is an American, single-engine, full-metal low-wing training aircraft. The T-33 was created on the basis of the F-80 by remodeling the internal surface and adding a second pilot's seat. The first T-33 took off in March 1948. and production ended in 1959. 5,691 aircraft of this type were built. The T-33 was also used as a shield towing plane during shooting training. The RT-33A version was produced as a reconnaissance aircraft with a camera in the nose of the plane. The T-33 was widely exported to 39 countries around the world, including Germany, France, Belgium, Brazil and Canada. Defending America's Skies The F-16 is one of the U.S. Air Force's important weapons, and to ensure that the aircraft would be able to handle changing mission requirements and be equipped with the latest weapons, a Multinational Staged Improvement Program (MSIP) was instituted. The Block 25, which featured more advanced avionics, cockpit displays, and AN/APG-68(V) radar as well as a larger fairing at the base of the vertical stabilizer for ECM equipment, first entered service in 1986. The next stage of the MSIP saw the introduction of two different turbofan engines, the Pratt & Whitney F100-PW-220 and the General Electric F110-GE-100, with GE-engined aircraft were designated Block 30 and PW-engined ones were designated Block 32. The Block 25 and Block 32 aircraft have gone on to serve as the basis for even more advanced improvements as the F-16's development continued. These aircraft are still the mainstay of many U.S. Air National Guard fighter units today. The single-engine jet fighter F-86 Sabre was developed by the American aircraft company North American Aviation in the late 1940s and became a key aircraft in terms of post-war military aviation. The F-86 adopted a swept-wing design, incorporated a large front air intake and used the General-Electric J47 jet engine. The fighter’s flying performance was impressive for the time and very different from the wartime propeller driven aircraft. The Sabre was armed with six M3 12.7 mm Browning machine guns installed in the nose. It was widely used by the U.S.A.F. and played a key role during the Korean War where it could effectively counter the Soviet fighter Mikoyan-Gurevich Mig-15, in the first jet dogfights in history.
