The Supermarine Spitfire fighter aircraft can undoubtedly be considered one of the most famous airplanes in the history of aviation and an icon of British aeronautical engineering. The F-16 Fighting Falcon, produced by the American company General Dynamics since the late '70s, is a real icon of the military aviation history. Designed by the American company McDonnell Douglas and entered service during the 1960s, the F-4 Phantom II two-seater all-weather supersonic fighter-bomber is one of the best-known and most famous aircraft in the history of military aviation. Initially designed for the U.S. Navy, it was also widely used by the U.S. Air Force and had significant commercial success around the world. The "E" version of the Phantom II, in detail, developed for the U.S. Air Force, was characterized by an M61 Vulcan cannon positioned in the nose and could be armed, for interception missions, with the AIM-9 Sidewinder and AIM-7 Sparrow air-to-air missiles. The two powerful General Electric J-79 engines allowed the Phantom II to exceed the speed of 1,240 knots (approximately 2,300 km / h). The innovative Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey project was initiated during the 1980s, but only emerged into production and was deployed to various arms of the US armed forces, after enduring a long and complex developmental process which lasted for over twenty years. The Osprey is a tilt rotor, equipped with two tilting engines which have large three-blade propellers attached that make it able to land and take-off vertically like a helicopter, and also possessing flight and transfer performance similar to that of a conventional propeller plane. The JSF Joint Strike Fighter program was a developmental project to create a new 5th generation all-weather multirole combat aircraft to replace the existing American and NATO strike-fighter force. The aerospace industry team led by aircraft manufacturer Lockheed Martin, created the single-seat, single-engine F-35 Lightning II. The A-6 Intruder entered service in the mid-60s as ground attack carrier based aircraft to replace the outdated planes as the propeller-driven A-1 Skyraider and the A-3 Skywarrior. The Grumman Corporation developed and designed the A-6A, based on U.S. Navy specifications, a twin jet-engine all-weather medium attack aircraft able to operate from the American aircraft carriers. The so called “Intruder” was characterized by a sturdy and robust fuselage and for the two seats side by side cabin configuration for the pilot and the weapons officer. The A-6E was the definitive attack version of the "Intruder" improved in avionics and attack systems, in particular in the version named TRAM, from the acronym of the laser target designation system, that allowed to be more effective to perform “all weather” missions and to be more lethal in detection and suppression of enemy targets. The CANT Z.501 "Gabbiano" was a central-hull seaplane designed for maritime reconnaissance, developed by engineer Filippo Zappata for the Cantieri Riuniti dell'Adriatico (C.R.D.A.) in the 1930s. The aircraft's design featured a large high wing and lateral floats, making it suitable for patrol, search, and rescue operations at sea. It was powered by a 900 HP Isotta Fraschini Asso XI engine, providing good range and a maximum speed of 275 km/h. The CANT Z.501 began its operational service during the Spanish Civil War but was extensively used by the Regia Aeronautica during World War II in the Mediterranean theater. The DC-3, the most famous of all transport aeroplanes has become known in nearly every part of the world as DAKOTA. It has been used by pratically every nation from America to the Soviet Union, by both China and all of the allies during World War II. After World War II it was used in the Berlin airlift, in Korea, during the Israeli-Arab conflicts, and finally became famous in its offensive role in Vietnam as the AC-47 GUNSHIP. The Messerschmitt Me 410 Hornisse was a low-wing twin-engine heavy fighter developed by the famous German aircraft manufacturer as an evolution of the previous Me-210. The heavy fighter was intended to replace the outdated Bf-110s in the Luftwaffe Squadrons. Powered by two 1,750 HP Daimler-Benz DB603 engines, it could be used to carry out several operational roles. Heavily armed with four 20mm Mauser cannons and with two 7.92mm machine guns installed in the front of the aircraft, it also featured two remotely controlled MG 131 machine guns housed in side "barbettes" on the fuselage. The initial versions for tactical support and bombing missions could carry an offensive payload of over 500 kg in the internal bomb bay or underwing pylons. Distribution to Luftwaffe Squadrons was implemented from mid-1943. The Me-410 participated in operational activities on various fronts, from Italy and the Balkans to the Eastern Front. The most capable medium bomber of the day was the twin-engine Vickers Wellington, which first flew in 1936 and entered RAF service with No.99 Squadron at Mildenhall in October 1938. The production aircraft bore little resemblance to the prototype aircraft and compared to contemporary medium bombers already in service, the Wellington appeared to be much more advanced in design and an aircraft feared by any potential enemy. Its sleek monoplane design and heavy defensive armament placed the new Wellington as one the advanced and capable medium bombers in the world.Perhaps the most significant feature of the Wellingtons design was the adoption of a geodetic construction method, which was developed by famous British engineer and inventor Barnes Wallis. Canadair Sabre F.4 The North American F-86 Sabre was not only Americas first swept-wing fighter, but also the fastest fighter in the world and one of the most important aircraft in the post-war jet era. As one of the world’s first classic jet fighters, the F-86 Sabre was produced in great quantities and went on to serve with around 30 of the worlds air forces, as well as being produced under licence in Canada, Australia, Japan 1:48 Scale Highly Detailed Model The last few months of the Second World War saw the introduction of the worlds first operational jet aircraft and with their appearance, a clear indication as to the future of aviation. Taking a significant lead in jet powered aviation technology, Germany was at least 12 months ahead of their Allied adversaries in this regard and with the end of the conflict, there was a rush to gain access to as much of this information as possible, so it could be applied to British, American and Soviet aviation projects. In the US, the aviation industry had concentrated their efforts on perfecting piston powered aviation during the war, a decision which was vindicated through the success of the P-51 Mustang and the sheer numbers available to Allied air forces. Inevitably, this would have an impact on Americas entry into the jet age and whilst their first operational jet fighter, the Lockheed P-80 Shooting Star, was an excellent aircraft, it utilised the straight wing technology synonymous with WWII designs. With its P-51 Mustang being widely regarded as the best single engined fighter of WWII, it was not long before the designers at North American aviation applied their undoubted talents to producing a new jet powered fighter, one which would incorporate research material obtained from the German jet programme. In their quest for ever greater speed, the new aircraft featured a 35% wing sweep and beautifully streamlined fuselage, whilst retaining the exceptional pilot visibility first introduced on the D variant of the Mustang. With three nose mounted .50 calibre machine guns on either side of the fuselage, the new Sabre shared much with the attributes of its piston engined predecessor, beautiful to look at, but a deadly fighting aeroplane. The first flight of the XP-86 prototype took place on 1st October 1947, in the hands of famous WWII Pearl Harbor Curtiss P-40 fighter ace George Welsh, who was North Americans chief test pilot at that time. Later in the development programme, an F-86A Sabre would go on to set a new world airspeed record of 670.84 mph, underlining the credentials of this important new fighter. On entering USAF service in 1949, the North American F-86 Sabre was not only Americas first swept wing fighter, but also the fastest fighter in the world and one of the most important aircraft in the post war jet era. The Korean War would witness the advent of the first jet versus jet combat and pitch Americas new jet fighter against the latest Soviet design, the highly capable Mikoyan Gurevich MiG-15, an aircraft which possessed a great aviation pedigree of its own and one which proved to be quite a shock for Western Powers. With both aircraft possessing advantages over the other, this aerial duel would prove to be quite an even contest, with the more robust training and previous WWII experience of Sabre pilots proving decisive in the end. Whilst US military planners were quick to publish combat victory ratios of 10:1 in favour of the F-86 Sabre, later research suggested the Sabres dominance was probably nearer 3:1, though still underlining the effectiveness of the aircraft. As one of the worlds first classic jet fighters, the F-86 Sabre was produced in great quantities and went on to serve with around 30 of the worlds air forces, as well as being produced under licence in Canada, Australia, Japan and Italy. Out of a final total production run which exceeded 9,800 aircraft, the Royal Air Force would operate around 430 Canadian built Sabres from 1953 until 1956, as the introduction of the excellent Soviet MiG-15 continued to have an impact on NATO military strategies. With the indigenously designed Supermarine Swift and Hawker Hunter still in development, the Sabre provided the RAF with a capable jet fighter at a crucial period in world history and whilst they would only see service for a relatively short period, it bought the RAF valuable time until they could introduce their own swept wing fighter designs. The first Curtiss Tomahawk fighters to arrive in Britain during the Second World War operated in the tactical reconnaissance role and were deemed unsuitable for fighter sweeps into German-held Europe. With the RAF already operating Phantoms initially intended for the Royal Navy at Leuchars air base in Fife, the withdrawal of HMS Ark Royal in 1978 meant that they also inherited the rest of the Fleet Air Arm Phantom fleet. Nos 43 and 111 Squadrons would use the Phantom FG.1 to defend Britains airspace until 1989, when they both converted to the BAe Tornado F.3. Illustrating the strength and adaptability of its basic design, the Supermarine Spitfire saw constant development throughout the Second World War, with over 20,000 aircraft eventually being produced in 24 different marks. As the battle hardened, Bf109 fighter pilots of the Luftwaffe began operations against Britain following the Dunkirk evacuation and they were at a disadvantage for the first time. The Messerschmitt Me410 was developed as a heavy fighter but went on to perform several roles such as night fighter, bomber destroyer and reconnaissance. Entering service two years later than scheduled in 1943 as a replacement for the Me210, the aircraft featured several distinctive features including the twin gun barbettes.The Me410 was essentially a development of the 210 featuring a lengthened fuselage, revised wings and more powerful engines. Although the Me410 performed well, it entered service too late to make an impact on the tide of war and was soon relegated to reconnaissance roles.The Messerschmitt Me410 is undoubtedly one of the most impressive looking aircraft types of the Second World War, the ultimate incarnation of Germany's fascination with the Zerstörer heavy fighter concept.Today, just a single complete example of a Messerschmitt Me410 is to be found on display anywhere in the world, one of the prized aviation possessions maintained by the Royal Air Force Museum at their Midlands RAF Cosford site, the very aircraft Airfix scanned at the outset of this exciting new model tooling project.Although an excellent and extremely heavily armed aircraft, the Me410 could not adequately defend itself against the latest Allied single engined fighters. One of the finest fighting aeroplanes in military history, the Messerschmitt Bf 109 series was developed continually throughout the Second World War, with the 'Gustav' being the last major variant and the one most heavily produced.  Flown by many of the Luftwaffe's most proficient aces, the 109G was adapted to perform a variety of operational roles and was heavily deployed against the huge USAAF daylight bombing raids which were sent against targets deep into Europe. The Bf 109 played an important role in all operations during World War II. The prototype flew for the first time on May 28, 1935. The single-seat fighter had a DB 605 engine with a maximum of 1,435 hp and a top speed of 594 km/h at an altitude of 7,400 m. The total production number was around 35,000 pieces. The huge Boeing 747 long-haul aircraft completed its maiden flight on February 9, 1969. The jumbo jet had Pratt & Whitney engines with 19,731 kp thrust, a takeoff weight of over 300,000 kg and could carry 385 passengers over a distance of 9,136 km. The 747 was planned by Boeing as a series, the 747-100 was followed by other variants with increased capacities. Baron Manfred von Richthofen and his red Fokker triplane made history during the First World War. the dr 1 was the most agile of all aircraft used and achieved high rates of climb. Delivered to the troops in June 1917, the Dr. 1 was withdrawn from the front in late 1917, but Richthofen continued to fly it until April 1918.
