The standout announcement from this months range launch is this delightful newly tooled model of Robert Stephenson’s L&MR ‘Planet’! A further six ‘Planet’ type locomotives were subsequently ordered from Robert Stephenson & Co., with another three supplied by Murray & Wood in Leeds using drawings supplied by Stephenson. The locomotive was withdrawn by 1841 as it was already obsolete due to rapid developments in locomotive design at the time. A working replica of ‘Planet’ was built in 1992 by Friends of the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester.

It was one of only eight locomotives given a name from new, the remainder being named between August 1925 and the following February.  Isinglass was rebuilt as an ‘A3’ in April 1946, which included a new boiler to a higher pressure, matching 27 new ‘A3’ locomotives constructed between 1928 and 1935. Renumbered 531 in 1946, the locomotive became No. 60063 under BR and was fitted with a double-chimney in 1959 and smoke deflectors in 1961. It was withdrawn from service in June 1964 and scrapped.

It was renamed ‘Sir Murrough Wilson’ in 1939 after one of the LNER’s directors. Renumbered ‘2’ in 1946, it received its BR number 60002 in May 1948.  Originally painted Garter Blue, it lost its side skirting and was painted plain black during the war, before returning to blue in 1946. From 1950 it ran in BR blue with black and white lining, before a repaint into lined-BR green in August 1951. It received its double-chimney in 1957 and was withdrawn from Gateshead shed in May 1964.

Kingfisher was renumbered 585 in 1946, but this was soon changed to 24 and the locomotive passed into BR service as No. 60024.  Painted purple with red and cream lining in June 1948, this changed to BR blue in 1950 and finally BR lined green in March 1952. A double-chimney was fitted in 1958 and the locomotive saw out its final days on Glasgow-Aberdeen expresses – as the last ‘A4’ in service, retiring in September 1966.

The brickwork and timber effect applied to the outside of the Tavern Car was removed from the ‘Dolphin’ in March 1951, while the Composite Restaurant Car was rebuilt with full depth windows in April 1951 – the last to be converted – as the high-level narrow windows were unpopular with diners.  Tavern Car No. 7894 continued in service from 1951 paired with Composite Restaurant No. 7833 which had been paired with the ‘White Horse’ from new. Repainted from BR carmine and cream into Southern Region green in mid-1957, the ‘Dolphin’ remained in service until withdrawn in January 1968.

No. 35028 was one of the last batch, ordered by the Southern Railway just prior to nationalisation in 1948 and therefore completed under British Railways. No. 35028 was finished in December 1948, including the newer, wedge-shape cab fronts from new.  Rebuilt from air-smoothed condition in 1959, ‘Clan Line’ was allocated to Nine Elms and hauled prestigious expresses such as the ‘Bournemouth Belle’ and ‘Atlantic Coast Express’. Retired in July 1967, the locomotive is preserved by the Merchant Navy Locomotive Society and regularly hauls trains on the main line. The Class 423 ‘4-VEP’ was once a common sight across the Southern Region third rail network, from the 1960s right through to the early 2000s when they were withdrawn. One of 194 units built at BREL York, set No. 7714 entered service in 1967. Becoming Class 423 under TOPS, the unit was renumbered 3017 in the 1980s. Following refurbishment in the early 1990s, the units were all renumbered, this one becoming No. 3417.  After privatisation of BR, the set became part of South West Trains. Upon retirement, it was sold to a group at the Bluebell Railway and, since 2009, has been overhauled and returned to BR blue, named ‘Gordon Pettitt’ and registered for operation on the main line. Initially, a further 19 locomotives based on No. 171 were delivered in 1905, known as the ‘Scott’ series. Thirteen of these were built as 4-4-2s, including No. 180, which was named ‘Couer de Lion’ in 1907 after the subject of the Ivanhoe novel by Sir Walter Scott.  The locomotive was converted to 4-6-0 in January 1913 and remained in service until withdrawn by British Railways from Gloucester Horton Road soon after nationalisation, in May 1948, after a service life of just over 43 years.

It lasted in service for over 41 years, not withdrawn until June 1953 from its final shed under BR, Cardiff Canton.

The class was given names of merchant shipping companies associated with Southampton Docks, of which CTG – Compagnie Générale Transatlantique – was one, though it was widely known simply as ‘French Line’.  The locomotive became BR No. 35019 in 1948 and was fitted with the new style wedge-shape cab and turned out in express passenger blue. It was rebuilt in May 1959, this time in BR lined green livery, which it wore until withdrawal from Weymouth shed in September 1965.

This charming LB&SCR 6-Wheel 3rd Class Brake Coach No. 106 looks incredible in its London Brighton & South Coast Railway Lined brown livery. The distinctive 6-wheel coach returns with new guises, this time covering operations in the south of England during the late 1800s and early 1900s.  Perfect for pairing with the delightful A1/A1X Terriers, these diminutive coaches are based on designs typical of the early steam era and make for a fine addition to your model layout, be it a picturesque branchline, busy station scene or heritage railway! The passenger accommodation in these vehicles would be very similar to that in a standard Third Class compartment coach, but with the addition of a dedicated area for the Guard to carry out his duties, including the provision of brake equipment which could be applied by the guard to secure the train at stations. This one started out numbered 43 and named ‘Gipsyhill’ on 15 June 1877 and was subsequently renumbered 643 by the LB&SCR.  It went on to be rebuilt to ‘A1X’ in 1919, but was sold by the Southern Railway for £785 to the Weston, Clevedon & Portishead Light Railway in December 1925, famously entering GWR stock in 1940. It passed into nationalisation but was withdrawn in January 1950 and scrapped at Swindon in March 1954.

Only one, No. 500, was completed before Thompson retired in 1946 and was named in his honour. A further 14 ‘A2/3s’ were completed in 1947, but the rest were built to an improved design by his successor Arthur Peppercorn and became ‘A2s’. It retained its Stroudley livery and name until 1917, before receiving ‘Newhaven’ lettering on its tanks.  Rebuilt with a larger boiler to ‘A1X’ specification in April 1913, it was acquired by the Southern Railway in 1926 and served through to BR days, when it became the oldest working locomotive on BR. Withdrawn in 1964, it was sold to the Bluebell Railway for preservation.

London & South Eastern was a new area of operation set up as part of the Sectorisation of BR in 1982. In June 1986 it was relaunched as Network SouthEast with a bold new branding in red, white and blue. As well as the third-rail electrified network to the south of London, the NSE network also reached as far west as Exeter and the inner part of the East of England. Former BR-liveried Mk1 coaching stock, such as this Corridor Brake Second, was repainted in the new colour scheme for locomotive-hauled trains on longer-distance services. The British Railways Mark 1 coach family includes some of the most successful designs in railway history, with thousands constructed and lasting from the early 50’s right up until the present day. The majority of coaching stock cascaded from BR regional service into Network SouthEast service was of the TSO type, which are fully open, Second Class vehicles, also known as Tourist Standard Open coaches.  These were used in trains of six or more vehicles, along with a BSK, on longer distance services, such as those operated between London Waterloo and Exeter, usually in the hands of an English Electric Class 50 from the launch of NSE – for which two locomotives were specially repainted into the striking new livery – and the early 1990s when they were replaced by Class 47s.
