The new locomotives had many innovations, such as chain-driven valve gear that was lubricated by means of an oil bath, electric lighting, one piece Firth-Brown driving wheels, and the distinctive air-smooth casing. The unusual French-style number 21C4 was replaced by the BR number 35004 in October 1949, following nationalization of the railways. Rebuilt in July 1958, it was eventually withdrawn from Bournemouth shed in October 1965 and scrapped by Cohens at Eastleigh shed in 1966. Following the success of the LNER’s newly-introduced ‘Coronation’ trains in 1935, a new train was introduced to operate between London King’s Cross and Leeds and Bradford in 1937. A new set of carriages was built that was identical to the ‘Coronation’ with four twin articulated coaches, though not the streamlined beavertail observation car, and named the ‘West Riding Limited’. Carriages were in pairs, sharing a bogie between the two, thus reducing friction and improving ride quality. The train first ran on 27th September 1937 and achieved an average speed of 63.3mph (101.9km/h) between King’s Cross and Bradford. It was hauled by Gresley ‘A4’ No. 4492 ‘Dominion of New Zealand’, which had emerged from Doncaster Works only three months earlier. Services were suspended for the duration of the Second World War, but were reinstated in 1949. A modern version of the train is still operated by the present-day LNER with a 6.30am departure from Bradford Forster Square station. The carriages are in pairs, sharing a bogie between the two. Coaches ‘A’ and ‘B’ in the eight-coach rake include an open third brake with accommodation for the guard, and a coach with a further third class area plus kitchen. The LNER built two ‘beaver tail’ observation cars for its ‘Coronation’ service that operated between London and Edinburgh on the East Coast Main Line. Both have survived, finding further use in converted form in Scotland, though Car 1729 has been painstakingly restored to its original profile with a streamlined tail that mirrored the shape of the ‘A4’ Class ‘Pacific’ on the front of the train. Passengers paid an additional fee to enjoy the comforts of the observation car in which refreshments were served by the steward at passenger’s individual armchairs. The ‘beaver tail’ was only added to the train during summer months. This OO gauge coach model is a highly detailed replica of that classic 'Coronation' Observation Car, as seen in the One:One Collection in Margate. What is the One:One Collection? Imagine a collection of railway locomotives and other vehicles in which the subjects are not scale models but the real thing. The The One:One Collection is a unique gathering of some of the most iconic and historically important railway locomotives, rolling stock and memorabilia in the United Kingdom. Each vehicle in the collection has either undergone, or is undergoing, painstaking restoration to return it to museum quality presentation, with many of the vehicles being certified for use on the United Kingdom’s rail network. From time to time, The The One:One Collection Museum will host guest locomotives for periods of medium or long term storage and display. When these locomotives are at the Margate warehouse, they will become honorary members of The One:One Collection for promotion and merchandising purposes. As part of The One:One Collection, we are pleased to showcase this model. Please note: the One:One Collection Museum is still in construction and not yet open to the public. British Rail introduced the production version of the Mk3 coach in 1975 with improved standards of comfort in response to competition from airlines and increased use of private motor cars. Designed and built by BREL, they were initially intended as locomotive-hauled stock, but with the development of the High Speed Train (HST), were soon adapted for use at speeds of up to 125mph (220km/h). The first version of the Mk3 coach had actually been built in 1972, with ten coaches produced for the prototype HST. Mk3 coaches continued to be built until 1988, but multiple units based on the Mk3 body shell were built until the early 1990s. The standard length of a Mk3 coach is 75ft (23m), which is ten feet longer than its predecessor, the Mk2, and is of monocoque construction with an all-welded mild steel stressed skin. Virgin operated several sets of these coaches for use with its HST power cars. Following introduction of its Pendolinos, most of Virgin’s Mk3 coaches moved on to other operators, though it did retain one set for peak time cover and had them refurbished at Doncaster and painted into the same livery as its Pendolino and Voyager trains. However, these too were stood-down in November 2014 when they were transferred to Abellio Greater Anglia. This highly detailed OO gauge model coach is based on the ‘TS’, a Trailer Second coach with an open plan seating area for second class passengers. Following on from the Mk3 coach, the Mk4s were built between 1989 and 1992 at Metro-Cammell’s Washwood Heath facility for the newly-electrified InterCity 225 services on the East Coast Main Line. A total of 282 carriages were built, to maintain a fleet of 30 fixed formations. Each one comprised of nine vehicles, operating with a Class 91 locomotive and a Driving Van Trailer on the other end to allow trains to operate in both directions without needing to turn the locomotive. The Mk4 is an all-steel design which incorporates a number of improvements over the previous Mk3s. Most-notably, the inclusion of automatic push-button operated plug-type doors in place of the manually-operated slam doors. The body shells, which were built by BREL and Breda in Milan, also have fully sealed gangways and controlled emission toilets (CETs). The coaches were used by successive ECML train operators that followed on from BR InterCity, including GNER, East Coast, and LNER, though they were largely replaced with the arrival of the first Class 801 ‘Azumas’ from 2019/20, with large numbers going to scrap. Following refurbishment, 12 Mk4s were acquired by Transport for Wales for its Holyhead-Cardiff ‘premier’ service, and these were joined by further examples that had been refurbished for a planned London Euston-Blackpool service by Grand Central that never materialised, bringing the TFW fleet up to 37 vehicles. Most notably, the inclusion of automatic push-button operated plug-type doors in place of the manually-operated slam doors. The Mk1 was BR’s first standardised design of railway carriage with thousands built across BR’s carriage works in Derby, Wolverton, Doncaster, York, Eastleigh, and Swindon between 1951 and 1963. The design was also used on first generation Diesel Multiple Units (DMUs) until 1974 and for non-passenger stock such as parcel vans and full brake vehicles. The new coaches gradually replaced older designs inherited from the ‘Big Four’ at nationalisation in 1968 and were used on all British Railways regions. The standard underframe length was 63ft 5in (19.33m) with gangwayed bodies 64ft 6in (19.7m), though suburban coaches and parcel vans were shorter. Coaches were either fully open or were corridor coaches with seating compartments. Bodywork was of steel panels on wooden frames, with a separate underframe consisting of heavy steel sections braced with steel trusses, originally mounted on ‘BR1’ bogies, though these were superseded by a new cast-steel design from 1958 known as the ‘Commonwealth’ bogie. Later examples utilised a Swindon-designed ‘B4’ bogie which gave a much-improved ride and was adopted for use on Southern Region Mk1 Electric Multiple Units (EMUs). This highly detailed OO gauge model coach represents a second class corridor coach from the Eastern Region.
