The CH-47D was the result of a June 1976 contract for a modernized Chinook. The improvements included a redesigned cockpit to reduce pilot workload, an advanced flight control system, and improved avionics. The Chinook has two tandem three-bladed counter-rotating fiberglass rotors. The CH-47D is powered by two Allied Signal Engines T55-L-712 3750 shp turboshaft engines and has a maximum speed of 163 mph. The CH-47D made its first flight in May 1979. The CH-47D carries twice the load of a CH-47A and has improved performance. The CH-47D can operate at night and in nearly all weather conditions. The CH-47D is equipped with an air-to-air refueling probe. The Chinook can accommodate a wide variety of internal payloads, including vehicles, artillery pieces, 33 to 44 troops, or 24 litters plus two medical attendants. The ACH-47A Chinook Guns-A-Go-Go, with a crew of eight, was armed with up to five M2 .50 Cal. or M60D 7.62mm machine guns (four window and one ramp mounted), and two fixed-mounted M24A1 20mm cannon and two M18/M18A1 pod-mounted 7.62mm miniguns , or two 19-tube 2.75 inch rocket launchers, and a chin-mounted 40mm automatic grenade launcher on the M5 armament subsystem. They also featured added armor protection for the crew and some critical components. During the Vietnam War three test ACH-47 Chinooks, nicknamed "Easy Money," "Stump Jumper" and "Birth Control" were deployed for six months temporary duty in Vietnam. A fourth ACH-47A, called "Cost of Living," was the prototype and therefore stayed in the United States for flight testing. Though these armed birds had a successful evaluation period, each destroyed every assigned target they engaged, three succumbed to fate. HMS Exeter was the second and last York-class heavy cruiser built for the Royal Navy during the late 1920s. Aside from a temporary deployment with the Mediterranean Fleet during the Abyssinia Crisis of 1935–36, she spent the bulk of the 1930s assigned to the Atlantic Fleet or the North America and West Indies Station. When World War II began in September 1939, the cruiser was assigned to patrol South American waters against German commerce raiders. Exeter was one of three British cruisers that fought the German pocket battleship, the Admiral Graf Spee, later that year in the Battle of the River Plate. She was severely damaged during the battle, and she was in the shipyard for over a year. After her repairs were completed, the ship spent most of 1941 on convoy escort duties before she was transferred to the Far East after the start of the Pacific War in December. Exeter was generally assigned to escorting convoys to and from Singapore during the Malayan Campaign, and she continued on those duties in early February 1942 as the Japanese prepared to invade the Dutch East Indies. Later that month, she was assigned to the Striking Force of the joint American-British-Dutch-Australian Command (ABDACOM), and she took on a more active role in the defence of the Dutch East Indies. The culmination of this was her engagement in the Battle of the Java Sea later in the month as the Allies attempted to intercept several Imperial Japanese Navy invasion convoys. Exeter was crippled early in the battle, and she did not play much of a role as she withdrew. Two days later, she attempted to escape approaching Japanese forces, but she was intercepted and sunk by Japanese ships at the beginning of March in the Second Battle of the Java Sea. Most of her crewmen survived the sinking and were rescued by the Japanese. About a quarter of them died during Japanese captivity. Her wreck was discovered in early 2007, and it was declared a war grave, but by 2016 her remains had been destroyed by illegal salvagers. Bismarck battleship is a world-famous German battleship in World War II. The ship commenced in 1936, in service in August 1940, full-load displacement of 50,000 tons, the largest battleship in the world at that time. Bismarck was a symbol of Nazi Germany Navy ships armed, and well, perfect protection, known as "the unsinkable sea fortress", but it was sunk after the implementation of its first combat mission. The ship in the Denmark Strait sea battle, the Bismarck in the war less than ten minutes after the sinking of HMS Hood Battlecruisers known as the British Royal Navy proud. But by the Ark Royal aircraft carrier take-off of the Swordfish torpedo bombers launched torpedoes hit the Bismarck, the Bismarck's rudder jammed, unable to control the direction of the normal navigation. The next morning, Bismarck was finally surrounded by the British fleet in the continuous onslaught by nearly two hours after Bismarck finally sank in the Atlantic Ocean. The BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicle was developed in the 1970s and entered service with the Soviet Army in 1980. Serial production started in the same year and has been continued until now (2017). The BMP-2 is powered by a single 300hp UTD-20-3 diesel engine and can carry up to 7 troops. The basic armament of the BMP-2 is: a 30mm 2A42 automatic cannon, 1 PKT machine gun cal .: 7.62 mm and 1 ATGM launcher (anti-tank guided missile) 9M111 Bassoon or 9M113 Competition. The BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicle was developed as a successor to the BMP-1. The main changes, compared to its predecessor, focused on better anti-tank weapons and increasing the durability of the vehicle on the battlefield. The BMP-2 definitely met the constructors' assumptions in these fields, and at the same time had the same advantages as the BMP-1: first of all, very high mobility on the battlefield and the ability to overcome water obstacles without special preparation. Thanks to these advantages, as well as a relatively simple and reliable design, the BMP-2 played a significant role in the war in Afghanistan in 1979-1989, being the basic equipment of mechanized infantry units fighting there. The BMP-2 was also widely exported to the Warsaw Pact countries, including Poland. It was not included in the equipment of the Polish Army until 1989, but it remains in its equipment to this day (2017). USS Essex (CV/CVA/CVS-9) was an aircraft carrier and the lead ship of the 24-ship Essex class built for the United States Navy during World War II. She was the fourth US Navy ship to bear the name. Commissioned in December 1942, Essex participated in several campaigns in the Pacific Theater of Operations, earning the Presidential Unit Citation and 13 battle stars. Decommissioned shortly after the end of the war, she was modernized and recommissioned in the early 1950s as an attack carrier (CVA), eventually becoming an antisubmarine aircraft carrier (CVS). In her second career, she served mainly in the Atlantic, playing a role in the Cuban Missile Crisis. She also participated in the Korean War, earning four battle stars and the Navy Unit Commendation. She was the primary recovery carrier for the Apollo 7 space mission. USS Langley (CV-1/AV-3) was the United States Navy's first aircraft carrier, the US Navy's first turbo-electric-powered ship. Langley was named after Samuel Pierpont Langley, an American aviation pioneer. Following another conversion to a seaplane tender, Langley fought in World War II, on 27 February 1942, she was attacked by nine twin-engine Japanese bombers of the Japanese 21st and 23rd Naval Air Flotillas and so badly damaged that she had to be scuttled by her escorts. USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier is Gerald R. Ford class aircraft carriers first ship, started construction on August 11, 2005, was officially launched on November 9, 2013, and entered service on July 22, 2017. It is the largest aircraft carrier in the United States and even the world. This class of aircraft carrier is planned to build 10 by 2058, making it the first aircraft carrier in the US Navy to use electromagnetic catapult systems, replacing the Nimitz class as the new backbone of the US Navy fleet. The construction of BB-63 began on 6 January 1941 in the New York Navy Yard as the third ship of Iowa-class battleships. The Iowa-class was planned with a view to rival the super battleships (Yamato-class-to-be) planned by Japan, which withdrew from Washington and London treaty in 1936. Its design represented that the class was 45,000 tons (the very limit to the London Treaty), nine 16in/50cal guns in three batteries, and the speed of 33 knots. The speed was decided under precautions against the Japanese Kongo-class high-speed battleships, which boasted of 30 knots. To fulfill the conditions, its engine compartment for a high-power engine needed to be a large one. However, the width of warships of the US, which faced two oceans, had to be 33m at the widest in order to pass through the Panama canal. Inevitably, its length at the waterline was very long 262m. although the US Navy at that time was capable of manufacturing 18 inch guns, it was impossible to mount them on a ship under 33m-wide. And the fact that the Yamato-class had 18 inch guns had been unknown to the US until the end of WWII. Entering service in June 1944, Missouri became the temporary headquarter of the 58th high-speed task force. The 6,500-ton Type 092 Daqingyu (US Department of Defense designation Xia-class, Chinese designation 09-II) submarine was the first ballistic missile-carrying, nuclear-powered submarine class (SSBN) deployed by the Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy and the first SSBN designed and built in Asia. She was designed by Huang Xuhua, and derived from the Han-Class SSNs, with an extended hull to accommodate four missile tubes. The first Changzheng 6 of its class was laid down in 1978 at Huludao 120 miles North-East of Beijing; she was completed in 1981. She then spent 6 years being fitted out and conducting tests with its 12 JL-1 (CSS-N-3) missiles, becoming active in 1987. The Stryker is a modern American wheeled armored car. The first prototypes of the vehicle were built around 2000, and serial production started in 2002 continues to this day. It is estimated that around 4,900 vehicles of this type had been built by the beginning of 2018. The Stryker is powered by an engine Caterpillar C7 o power of 350 hp. The armament depends on the vehicle version, but the basic version (M1126) includes two 7.62 mm machine guns or one Mk.19 grenade launcher and one 7.62 mm machine gun. Vehicle concept - or actually a series of vehicles - Stryker was born at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries, when the US Army command came to the conclusion that in the coming armed conflicts the key element would be speed of action, mobility and the ability to rapidly shift forces on a strategic scale. It was assumed that the US Army would have the ability to deploy a Light Infantry Brigade (later known as the Stryker Brigade Combat Team) in 96 hours anywhere on the planet. Following these requirements, a completely new armored vehicle called the Stryker was developed, which is characterized by very high mobility, high maximum speed, is susceptible to modernization, but has relatively thin armor not exceeding 15 mm. Many development versions of this vehicle were created in the course of serial production. The basic, wheeled armored personnel carrier was designated M1126. A reconnaissance version called M1127 was also created. A tank destroyer was also built, armed with the M68A2 105mm gun, designated M1128. A self-propelled mortar with 81 or 120 mm caliber, designated M1129, was also produced.
