The USS Yorktown was completed in September 1937 as the first ship of her namesake-class and the U.S. Navy's sixth aircraft carrier. When the Pacific War broke out, she became the flagship of Task Force 17 under the command of Rear Admiral Frank J. Fletcher and conducted a number of operations around the Pacific. During the Battle of the Coral Sea in May 1942, she helped thwart the Japanese Navy's advance on New Guinea despite suffering severe damage. Subsequently, at the Battle of Midway, the Yorktown and her sister ships USS Enterprise and USS Hornet defeated the Japanese Mobile Fleet, but the Yorktown herself suffered severe damage by torpedo and bomb hits from the aircraft of the Japanese carrier Hiryu. She was finally sunk by torpedoes from the Japanese submarine I-168. The Tamiya 1/700 scale model is a precise replica assembly kit of this iconic carrier during WWII.

A Favourite Sister
The CV-3 Saratoga was launched as the second ship in the U.S. Navy's Lexington class of aircraft carriers in April 1925 and commissioned in November 1927. Fondly nicknamed "Sister Sara", she was in fact originally laid down as a battle cruiser but converted into an aircraft carrier during construction. Thus, she had a more slim-line hull than other carriers and featured an enclosed bow that was unusual for the times but improved protection from higher swells. The large starboard-side funnel was positioned almost in the center of the ship and featured the bridge with 5-inch guns immediately ahead of it. Sister Sara was the longest aircraft carrier to take part in operations in the Pacific, and she withstood some fearful assaults and damage to survive WWII. Her final contribution to the U.S. cause came in 1946, when she was used as a target and sunk in nuclear tests together with the Japanese ship Nagato among others.

The slim-line form originally intended as a battle cruiser is recreated in left and right side hull pieces. The flight deck is molded in a single piece, including details such as arresting wires, and the central guide rails used for moving seaplanes.
The starboard side bulge gave the Saratoga an asymmetrical form which is faithfully captured by the model. Large starboard funnel and bridge to its fore are also realistically replicated.
The model is packed with details, including recreations of the Mk.37 gun director, SK radar antenna and funnel-front SM radar, plus 40mm quadruple and 5-inch gun positions, and even lifeboats!

The U.S. Navy heavy cruiser, Indianapolis, was commissioned at the Philadelphia Navy Yard on November 15, 1932. On the opening day of the Pacific War, December 7, 1941, as flagship of Scouting Force, US Fleet, she was making a simulated bombardment near Hawaii. In March 1943, she became flagship of Admiral Raymond Spruance, Commander Fifth Fleet which consisted of Task Force 58 plus 130,000 marines and army troops. Leading the giant fleet, she participated in most of the major Central Pacific campaigns. In March 1945, she was severely damaged and returned to Mare Island for repairs. During the two-month period of repairs, her equipment was renewed and much improved with the latest radar, electronic gun sights and new Curtiss Seahawks. After the repairs, she loaded secret cargo and personnel at San Francisco, and sailed for Tinian Island on July 16, where a B29 bomber base was located, and arrived there to unload the cargo and personnel on July 26. Then four days later, on July 30, she sunk after taking two torpedo hits from the submarine I-58.

Tamiya presents a plastic model assembly kit of the Heavy German Battle Cruiser, Prinz Eugen.
The Germania Belst Company from Kiel constructed the Prinz Eugen as the third and last Admiral Hipper Class Heavy Cruiser to be commissioned by the Kriegsmarine. Admiral Hipper Class Heavy Cruisers were characteristically larger than heavy cruisers from other countries, and the huge Prinz Eugen was elongated an additional 5 meters. With a displacement tonnage measuring at over 14,000tons this enormous German cruiser packed the firepower of four 20.3cm twin gun turrets for its main armament. In May of 1941 the Prinz Eugen participated in Operation Rheinubung to intercept trade ships in the Atlantic. On this mission she joined forces with the Battleship Bismarck to help sink the British Battle Cruiser Hood and inflict considerable damage on the British Battleship Prince of Wales. In February of 1942, the Prinz Eugen, together with the German battleships Scharnhorst and Gneisenau left their docks at Brest for Norway on an unexpected dash through the British Channel in broad daylight. Known as Operation Cerberus, this was to be one of the riskiest, yet best prepared and best coordinated operations carried out by German forces in the Second World War. After arriving safely in German waters, Prinz Eugen was active in the strategic withdrawal from the Russian front, firing thousands of shells at encroaching Russian forces when she provided support for evacuation ships carrying German troops and civilians. One of the few German cruisers to survive World War II, the Prinz Eugen now rests in the warm waters of the Marshal Islands. After enduring two atomic bomb tests she lies capsized in the calm shallows of the Kwajelein Atoll.

From the severity of the Cold War Era arms race, Russia came to emerge as the world's second largest naval power. Meant to oppose the Aircraft Carriers of the powerful U.S. Navy, the Russian Navy created a new type of Guided-Missile Nuclear Submarine known as the Oscar class. Massive Oscar-I Class submarines were first employed in 1982. Later, the Oscar-I submarine would evolve into the even larger Oscar-II Class, with an awesome displacement tonnage of 18,300 tons and total length of 154 meters. Despite their gargantuan size, Oscar-II Class submarines were capable of high-maneuverability and silenced movement. In January 1995 the 10th submarine of the Oscar-II series, the K.141 Kursk, went into commission with Russia's Northern Fleet and was assigned to defend the country's northern borders. Like other Oscar-II Class nuclear submarines the Kursk had two-layer construction consisting of an 8.5 diameter pressure-resistant inner hull as well as an external hull. The approximately 3.5-meter space between these two hull layers housed twelve 550km-range SS-N-19 anti-ship cruise missile launch tubes on each side. To accommodate these missile launchers the 154m-long Kursk was built extra-wide, and this behemoth of a nuclear submarine became known for its total girth of 18.2 meters. The Kursk sank five years later on August 12th, 2000. This incident would mark the most tragic episode in all of Russian submarine history. At 11:30 am, 140km off the naval port of Severomorsk (Northern Fleet Headquarters), an explosion of unknown cause sent the Kursk 100m underwater to the bottom of the Barents Sea. Despite efforts of the Russian Navy, as well as British and Norwegian rescue crews, the 118 men on-board, including the captain, could not be saved.

Witness to a Famous Moment in Japan's History
During WWII, 175 of the 2,000 ton Fletcher-class destroyers were built for the U.S. Navy and they served as the main destroyers of both the Pacific and Atlantic fleets. One such Fletcher-class ship was the USS Cushing (DD-797) which was completed in 1944. Taking lessons learned in battle, she was a late-production ship fitted with increased anti-aircraft armament and a square-shaped bridge which offered greater visibility. In addition to five 12.7cm guns and a quintuple 533mm torpedo launcher, she was armed with five twin 40mm cannons and seven single 20mm cannons. From her deployment in 1944, she took part in actions such as the attacks on Taiwan and the Battle of Leyte Gulf, and at the end of the war she entered Tokyo Bay with the USS Missouri and witnessed the signing of the surrender documents.

Germany's Z Class destroyers were built just prior to the start of WWII and saw combat against British destroyers at Narvik in northern Norway and as escorts for the battlecruiser Scharnhorst's last sortie. The Type 1936A ships had their 12.7cm guns replaced with 15cm guns, and the Z37-39 ships in particular were fitted with a twin turret at the bow. In 1944, a plan to increase anti-aircraft armament on the Z Class destroyers, code-named "Barbara," was put into action. These destroyers fought against the mighty Royal Navy until the end of the war.

The British V Class warships have established the basic style for present day destroyers. The Vampire was built in England and was commissioned as a warship in 1917. Later in 1933, it was transferred into the Royal Australian Navy. In December 1941, she was deployed to fight in Malaya and was involved in the rescuing of crewmen from the sinking British battle cruiser Repulse. In April the following year, the Vampire was sunk near the British Colony Ceylon.

The Yorktown's Faithful Protector
The USS Hammann (DD412) was commissioned in August 1939, the fourth ship in the 1,500-ton Sims class of destroyers. Her hull had a raised sheer strake to protect from higher waves, while the use of a single funnel allowed a large area at the stern for her impressive ordnance. She was equipped with four 12.7cm guns, four single 12.7mm machine guns and eight torpedo tubes. After rescuing survivors of the stricken aircraft carrier USS Lexington in the Battle of the Coral Sea in May 1942, the Hammann screened another aircraft carrier, the USS Yorktown, in the Battle of Midway in June of that year. While attempting to salvage the Yorktown, which had been badly damaged by Japanese aircraft, she was torpedoed by the Japanese submarine I-168, and swiftly sank. She received two battle stars for her service in two major naval battles of WWII.

Modern U.S. Military uniform

This is a figure model kit created by the Ukrainian kit maker ICM. This version takes the standard kit and powers it up by adding Tamiya accessories and instructions. The kit itself recreates crew from the Luftwaffe, the famed WWII German air arm which of course included not only pilots but also a whole range of recruits in supporting roles. They served in some harsh winter climates, necessitating warm clothes such as pilots’ jackets with fur collar (often the pilot’s own), and thick sheepskin overcoats for those on sentry duty. After the Fall of France in June 1940 victorious German forces commandeered a number of French vehicles for their own use, among them the 105hp engine AMD 4-wheel drive car, which packed a fair punch with its turreted 25mm gun and 7.5mm machine gun. Around 200 were pressed into German service as the P204(f), 43 of which were fitted with train wheels for use on the railways. Most were also given a large frame antenna and new radio, and packed off to the Eastern Front where they would provide protection for the crucial rail network from local partizans and the Red Army, and they did so until the end of the Second World War.

In February 1936, Dr. Ferdinand Porsche presented his first prototype of the "People's Car", which was to be the base of the Volkswagen "Beetle". However, with the outbreak of WWII, all manufacture of the Volkswagen was immediately turned to military production. In January 1938, German Defense Forces presented specifications for a military version of this practical vehicle. In November of that same year, a prototype was completed and it was officially designated Pkw. K1 "Kubelwagen" Type 82. The vehicle used a light but sturdy monocoque construction with foldable canvas top. Model can be displayed by itself or combined with a model from our 1/48 scale aircraft series for detailed diorama.About the German Kubelwagen Type 82 Africa-CorpsOne of the most widely used WWII vehicles, the K?belwagen Type 82 featured a lightweight monocoque body, four wheel independent torsion bar suspension and a 23.5hp air-cooled 4 cylinder 985cc engine. Based on Dr. Ferdinand Porsche’s Volkswagen, the Type 82 possessed excellent maneuverability and handling, serving as a multi-purpose vehicle for the army as well as the Luftwaffe (air force). In total over 50,000 units were produced during WWII, with slight variations between models including shape of rear fender, under guard, turn signals and exhaust layout. The K?belwagen was first deployed to the North Africa campaign in 1941, with a specialised Africa Corps version featuring balloon tires going into production from 1942. Designed to be more suited to desert conditions, the Africa Corps model was used during both the North Africa and Italian campaigns.Features

With approximately 50,000 units produced during WWII, the US Army's series of M4 Sherman tanks were one of the driving forces behind Allied victory. Designed for efficient mass production and including room for future modifications, the M4 series boasted superior ground performance with excellent reliability. Amongst the many variants produced, the early production M4 featured an angular shaped welded hull, a cast turret loaded with a 75mm M3 cannon and a 350hp air-cooled gasoline engine. The M4 Sherman saw action in North Africa and throughout Europe, including serving in the Normandy and Italian campaigns.

Designed by Dr. Ferdinand Porsche, the amphibious Schwimmwagen was used by the German land forces, paratroopers and engineering corps during WWII, fulfilling both reconnaissance and liaison duties. Capable of both 2 and 4 wheel drive, the Schwimmwagen was widely respected for its ability to maneuver on a variety of difficult terrain. Featuring a high-set exhaust pipe and a rear mounted 25hp air-cooled 4-cylinder 1,130cc engine, the Schwimmwagen could reach top speeds of up to 80km/h on land and 10km/h in water. Propelled in the water by a screw propeller, which was easily raised above the rear engine deck when driven on dry land, steering whilst in the water was done just like on land, using the front wheels as rudders. Mass-produced from 1942, 14,276 type 166 Schwimmwagen were produced by the end of 1944.Features
