The Titanic achieved tragic fame from the events that occurred during its maiden voyage on April 14, 1912. The Queen of the Sea for the White Star Line was to carry 1,316 passengers from Southampton to New York. At around 11:40 p.m., the British luxury liner collided with an iceberg in the Atlantic and was torn open on the starboard side by almost 100 m. The Titanic sank on April 15 at around 0.20 a.m. and 1,503 of the 2,206 people on board were killed. The 46,329 GRT and 267 m long ship had a water displacement of 66,000 t.

Vosper company became famous, during the Second World War, for the production of small and fast Motor Torpedo Boats (MTB) and Motor Gun Boats (MGB) for the Royal Navy. Among the various boats in production, the Vosper MTB 72’6” were characterized by a significant life cycle with different mission profiles as the coastal patrol and the anti-submarine support in the North Sea and English Channel. Moves from 3 engines with and impressive power of 4,200 hp, Vosper MTB was able to reach a speed close to 40 knots (70 km/h). The first versions were introduced at the beginning of the war but were gradually introduced new variants, type I and type II, which were characterized by a different combination of offensive and defensive weaponry. At 42,343 tons, the Bismarck was the largest and most modern battleship in the world (along with the Hood) in her day. On May 24, 1941, in a naval battle together with the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen, she sank the largest British battle cruiser, the Hood, with the 5th salvo of her 38-cm guns at the pack ice limit off Greenland. Launched at Blohm & Voss in Hamburg on February 14, 1940, she was, together with the identical Tirpitz, the most modern ship and the prestige object of the German navy. At 251 meters long, the top of the mast reached 52 meters above the water surface. A total of 17,450 tons of steel were used for armor protection. The newly designed heavy artillery fired 800 kg projectiles up to a range of 34.2 km, penetrating 350 mm armor up to 21 km. While the Prinz Eugen received no hits in the May 24 engagement, the bow-damaged Bismarck set course for a French port. During the subsequent pursuit by British ships and aircraft, the ship was shot out of action by numerically superior forces of Home Fleet after a torpedo hit the steering gear on May 27, 1941, and sank in the Atlantic some 800 km off the French coast. Launched at the Birkenhead shipyard of Cammel Laird on the 13th April 1937, H.M.S. Ark Royal was involved in the sinking of the German Battleship Bismarck. Later she was torpedoed by the German Submarine U-81. At 06:13 hrs. on 14th November 1941, she went down, with only one sailor losing his life. In 1625, while Sweden was busy building an empire around the Baltic Sea, the Swedish King Gustavus Adolphus ordered new warships. Among them was the Wasa. On its maiden voyage in 1628, the Wasa set sail and fired a salute. But only after a few minutes of sailing the ship began to heel over. She righted herself slightly - and heeled over again and, to everyones horror and disbelief, the glorious and mighty warship suddenly sank. Following its operational successes during WW1, the Italian “Regia Marina” continued with further post- war developments into various underwater and surface assault vehicles. The Motoscafo da Turismo Modificato (M.T.M.) for example, was designed to ensure a covert and rapid approach to targets with a low risk of detection from enemy forces. Closing in on the target, the pilot then adjusted the rudder to maintain direction and propelled the fast small boat on a collision course to the target. The pilot, positioned at the stern, jumped from the craft at a safe distance before the collision. The high explosive charge positioned in the bow of the Barchino detonated upon impact against the target. The most successful deployment of the ‘Barchino’ by the Italian Regio Marina, was the assault led by Luigi Faggioni on the Royal Navy heavy cruiser HMS York at Suda Bay, Crete in 1941.
