TAMIYA
Tamiya 31404 1/700 Waterlin... $12.95
This is an assembly kit of the Hatsuyuki, the third ship of the Fubuki-class of "Special Type" destroyers. Although a revolutionary design, it was also plagued by a weak hull, a fact demonstrated when the Hatsuyuki's bow was shorn off by the force of waves during a typhoon in 1935. This incident led the Japanese Navy to give its destroyers strengthening modifications. The Hatsuyuki went on to see action at the Battle of Malaya and the Battle of Sunda Strait, and this model depicts the ship with its additional AA armament. Length: 157mm. Image shows assembled and painted kit.

Completed in August 1935, its main guns were later replaced with 20.3cm dual guns turning this ship into a heavy cruiser. Though of the same class, the Mikuma's bridge and other structures are slightly different from those of its elder sister, the Mogami. The Mikuma was part of the 7th Heavy Cruiser Squadron of the 2nd fleet and took part in the Malay landing operation and the Battle of Sunda Strait at the beginning of the Pacific War. But, during the battle of Midway, when all ships of the 7th Squadron made simultaneous evasive maneuvers to escape an enemy submarine, the tail of the Mogami moved forward and slammed into the Mikuma. Afterwards, the Mikuma sustained heavy attacks from over a hundred US bombers and sank to the ocean floor on the seas Northwest of Midway. TAMIYA
Tamiya 78032 1/350 Japanese... $88.95
Always on the Front Line The Kagero was completed in November 1939, the lead ship of the Kagero class of destroyers that was the first constructed by the Japanese after their exit from the London Naval Treaty in 1937. The Kagero class packed a heavy punch with three twin 12.7cm gun placements and two 61cm quadruple torpedo tubes, and combined that with a top speed of 35 knots, plus a range of 5,000nmi at 18 knots. The Kagero took part in some of the most renowned actions on the seas in WWII, including the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, the Battle of Midway in 1942, and major assasults on Rabaul and Colombo. Although largely starved of opportunities to show what it could do, in the November 1942 Battle of Tassafaronga the Kagero used its Type 93 "long lance" torpedoes to great effect, together with eight other vessels scoring hits on the US ships Minneapolis, New Orleans, Pensacola and Northampton, crippling and eventually sinking the latter. Many of her sorties were otherwise made ferrying reinforcements and supplies to Japanese bases. She met her end in May 1943, sunk by mines in the Blackett Strait off of Kolombangara. Features This is a 1/350 scale plastic model assembly kit recreating the Kagero, lead ship of the class named for her which fought on the front line for the Japanese Navy from the early stages of the Pacific War. Length: 338mm, width: 31mm. Features left/right hull pieces with fine depiction of hull panel joints and degaussing cable. Photo-etched parts recreate funnel mesh, loop antenna, paravane crane, propeller guards, ladders and more. Metal anchor chains and propeller shafts provide a highly realistic air. Clear parts are used to depict bridge windows and searchlight lenses. Superstructures feature crisp molding for a detailed finish. ABS resin parts are used for masts and flag poles, with a jig provided to ensure proper assembly of tripod mast parts. Poly caps in parts such as main gun positions, torpedo tubes and rudder allow natural movement.

The USS New Jersey, affectionately known as the "Big J," was the second ship of this class and saw service in WWII from early-1944. She was equipped with new weaponry including Tomahawk cruise missiles, Harpoon anti-ship missiles, and Phalanx CIWS as well as new radars, ECM, and other electronic systems. The World's Largest "Submarine Carrier" The I-400 was a submarine the likes of which the world had never seen before. At the time of their completion, the I-400 and her sister ships were the largest, and arguably the most advanced submarines in the world. With a 122m length, 12m width, and 6,560 ton displacement, their size rivalled that of destroyers of the time and their amazing endurance could allow them to traverse the globe one and a half times. Loaded with 3 Seiran bombers, the planned attack on the Panama Canal was only moments away from reality. Diverted to attack the gathering Allied invasion fleet at Ulithi, the war ended before the submarines could launch their strike. However, the I-400 class submarines' technological advances were recognized and it can be said that they helped influence the development of nuclear ballistic submarines after the war. Features 1/350 scale assembly kit model. Length: 348.5mm Hull comprised of upper and lower sections for ease of assembly. Hangar features realistic interior details and can store 3 Seiran aircraft. Parts included for 2 Seiran aircraft with wings extended, which can be posed on the catapult or on the included display stand. Commissioned in September 1941, she had been planned after the Japanese exit from the Washington Naval Treaty in 1936 and was as such not subject to some of the limitations it imposed, being built in-line with Navy demands. Together with her sister ship the Shokaku, she formed Carrier Division 5 and took part in the Pearl Harbor attacks of December 8, 1941, during which all of her aircraft made it back. In April 1942 she would sink the HMS Hermes in the Indian Ocean and that May she accounted for the USS Lexington in the Battle of the Coral Sea. Thereafter she served in fighting around the Solomon Islands and the South Pacific, before meeting her end at the Battle of Leyte Gulf in October 1944. Features This is a 1/700 scale plastic model assembly kit. Length: 367mm. The Zuikaku is recreated with less anti-aircraft weaponry than she bore in the Battle of Leyte Gulf (as depicted in Item 31214). Decals are included to recreate flight deck lines and other details. Revell 05040 1/350 Bismarck... $238.95
At 42,343 tons, the Bismarck was the largest and most modern battleship in the world (along with the Hood) in her day. On May 24, 1941, in a naval battle together with the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen, she sank the largest British battle cruiser, the Hood, with the 5th salvo of her 38-cm guns at the pack ice limit off Greenland. Launched at Blohm & Voss in Hamburg on February 14, 1940, she was, together with the identical Tirpitz, the most modern ship and the prestige object of the German navy. At 251 meters long, the top of the mast reached 52 meters above the water surface. A total of 17,450 tons of steel were used for armor protection. The newly designed heavy artillery fired 800 kg projectiles up to a range of 34.2 km, penetrating 350 mm armor up to 21 km. While the Prinz Eugen received no hits in the May 24 engagement, the bow-damaged Bismarck set course for a French port. During the subsequent pursuit by British ships and aircraft, the ship was shot out of action by numerically superior forces of Home Fleet after a torpedo hit the steering gear on May 27, 1941, and sank in the Atlantic some 800 km off the French coast. Of 2,092 men on board, 115 survived. Following its operational successes during WW1, the Italian “Regia Marina” continued with further post- war developments into various underwater and surface assault vehicles. The Motoscafo da Turismo Modificato (M.T.M.) for example, was designed to ensure a covert and rapid approach to targets with a low risk of detection from enemy forces. Closing in on the target, the pilot then adjusted the rudder to maintain direction and propelled the fast small boat on a collision course to the target. The pilot, positioned at the stern, jumped from the craft at a safe distance before the collision. The high explosive charge positioned in the bow of the Barchino detonated upon impact against the target. The most successful deployment of the ‘Barchino’ by the Italian Regio Marina, was the assault led by Luigi Faggioni on the Royal Navy heavy cruiser HMS York at Suda Bay, Crete in 1941.
