In 1916, British and French troops launched the Somme Offensive against German army astride the River Somme in northern France. This battle, one of the bloodiest in human history, has also been remembered because of a new weapon that shocked the German army, the British Mk.I heavy tank. Tank, one of the greatest inventions in the war history of the twentieth century, marked the beginning of a new era of army mechanization.  Mark series heavy tanks went through several improvements. The only thing unchanged was their unique rhomboid shape which remained in many people’s memory as the main feature of WWI tanks. In 1917, the British found a new transmission and engine, and then they started to improve Mk.IV tanks. Thanks to the epicyclic gearbox, only one driver was needed to drive the new tank. The tank was powered by a 150hp Ricardo 6 cylinder in-line petrol engine and could drive for 10 hours on a rugged terrain. This new tank was finally designated Mk.V. Mk.V tanks were first used in the Battle of Hamel in 1918, when they contributed to a successful assault by Australian units on the German lines. During the development of Mk.V heavy tank model kit, MENG received great supports from The Tank Museum in Bovington, UK. As one of the most famous tank museums in the world, it keeps more than 300 vehicles, including the Mk.V heavy tank (male). MENG’s designers measured the real vehicle and studied a lot of reference materials in order to accurately represent this classic tank. This kit includes precisely reproduced driver’s cabin, engine and other interiors. Traditional cement-free workable tracks are easy to assemble. “Crib” trench crossing device is provided to show its unique history. We believe that this Mk.V will bring a brand new building experience for rhomboid tank fans.

The Panzer Empire’s Moving Fortress After British tanks appeared in battles during the WWI, Germany developed its own tank—A7V. This tank weighed 30t. Normally it had a crew of 16 to 18, and sometimes up to 26 were carried. Thus, it’s the tank that had the largest number of crew in the world. It adopted an improved Holt tractor chassis, and two Daimler engines generating 200hp output. Its armament was a 57mm Maxim-Nordenfelt QF gun and six 7.92mm Maxim MG-08 heavy machine guns. As resources were in short supply during the wartime, the A7V side armor plates made by Krupp Corp were assembled from several parts. The A7V tank was put into service in January of 1918. A New Masterpiece, The Lightning II The F-35 was the most eye-catching new fighter jet over the past ten years. With the unmatched R&D capability of the Skunk Works, the American Lockheed Martin Corporation has undertaken the R&D and production of the United States’ fourth-generation fighters. After winning the U.S. Air Force Advanced Tactical Fighter Program (ATF) in the 1990s, Lockheed Martin has developed and produced the F-22. The Lockheed Martin’s X-35 also won the Joint Strike Fighter Program (JSF). After a series of test flights and improvements, the X-35 has entered military service in the name of F-35. Unlike the F-22 air superiority fighter exclusively used by the USAF, the F-35 has a conventional takeoff and landing (CTOL) variant, the F-35A, a variant for large aircraft carriers, the F-35C and a short takeoff and vertical landing (STOVL) variant for small aircraft carriers and amphibious assault ships, the F-35B. The F-35 not only serves in the USAF, the US Navy and the Marines, but also becomes the standard fourth-generation fighter of many US allies. Thanks to the large order quantity, its unit cost has dropped dramatically. Developed about 10 years after the F-22 project, the F-35 has used advanced electronic equipment, which makes it play a more important role in the digital warfare. By April 2017, Lockheed Martin has delivered more than 200 F-35s to its clients. The Lightning II is now the most produced fourth-generation fighter. The LS-007 Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II Fighter is the latest MENG LS series plastic aircraft model kit in 1/48 scale. The model is 326mm long and 223mm wide. Based on the latest reference materials in the recent years, this model features accurate profile, complete weapons bay and air inlet ducts and lots of surface details. Various control surfaces can be installed in different positions. What’s more, the latest stores of the USAF are provided in the kit.

Was there any aircraft as unorthodox and unconventional in appearance as the Dornier Do 335?  Of course there was, but the Do 335 was to be a mass-produced fighter-bomber aircraft that would have entered regular service. What made this aircraft an interesting proposition was its configuration. This was indeed a two-engine design, but centred around an unusual push-pull design. That in itself might make the aircraft sound like a non-starter, but the Do 335 was arguably one of, or THE fastest piston-engine aircraft that ever saw service, as the design eliminated the traditional parasitic drag element that was typical for a standard two-engine design layout. It was also very versatile.  Conceived from the outset as a multirole machine, this adaptable design could be used as a straight fighter aircraft, and also as a night-fighter, complete with a second, tandem crew position that gave that version of the Do 335 its distinctive humpback appearance. Bombs could also be carried in an internal bay, and if you required a heavy fighter, then this was possible by mounting two MK103 cannon in two wing-mounted pods that protruded from the wing leading edge (HK Models kit #01E07). The Do 335 was also a robust and highly manoeuvrable machine, and one that could actually cope with a rear engine failure. It was also one of the few aircraft of the time that was fitted with an ejection seat. Should this need to be used, the canopy, rear pro- peller and upper tail fin would be blasted away bythe use of explosive bolts, preventing the pilot from striking them on his way out. Another unusual feature of this aircraft was the cruciform tail layout. A downward pointing fin was included, which would hopefully negate any possible rear propeller damage that could result from an awkward landing. First flown in 1943, the project wasn’t without its problems. Whilst the aircraft was in- herently stable on both ground and in the air, due to the rear engine resting behind the centre of gravity, it did suffer from some technical issues that were never overcome, such as a weak undercarriage. Despite the great hopes that the Nazis had for the Do 335, like many of their wonder designs, it simply came too late to make any difference, with only 37 being built by the war’s end. Allies evaluation of this Do 335 ‘Pfeil’ showed that it was an excellent performer and could have been a serious opponent, had it not been for Germany’s lack of production capability and onerous bureaucratic and person- al in-fighting. The subject of this kit release is the standard A-0/1 fighter-bomber. This is the version of machine seen today at the NASM, who own the last surviving example of the Do 335.
