The McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle design was initiated in the 1970s to equip the United States Air Force fighter squadrons with an advanced and high-performance jet fighter. The effective and robust aerodynamically design lay-out led to production of the two-seat “all-weather” F-15E Strike Eagle fighter-bomber. Entering into service with the USAF in the late 1980s and replacing the outdated F-111, its operational roles included ground attack, bombing and interdiction missions. It retained the flight design characteristics of the original F-15 such as the two tail drifts, sturdy mid-wing and tandem two-seater cabin, in the rear of which was the Weapon Systems Officer. From this position the officer selected the aircraft’s route management, target tracking and electronic countermeasures. The F15-E was deployed to numerous operational theatres such as the Desert Shield and Desert Storm campaigns of the early 1990s. The U.S. Navys first super-fighter, the F-14, was developed partially on the basis of experience gained with the F-111, a multi-role plane designed by General Dynamics, the Navy version of which, the F111B, was built by Grumman. The F-14A first flew on 21st December 1970, and production-line models started reaching squadrons in 1973. Squadrons VF-1 and VF-2 accompanied the last voyage of the aircraft carrier Enterprise in Vietnam, yet never saw combat. The Tomcat would not see action until 1981, when it shot down two Libyan Su-22s during an encounter over the Gulf of Sirte. Since then the F-14 has been updated several times and has taken parts in various conflicts in the Middle East (Iran-Iraq war, 1st and 2nd Gulf War), as well as in operations over the former Yugoslavia and minor skirmishes over the Mediterranean. The Spitfire is certainly the most famous and best known fighter aircraft of World War II. Winning many dogfights of this conflict, the plane was first developed in the 1930s. It underwent a continuous evolution and improvement of its aerodynamic features as well as its engine and armament made it last with numerous air forces until after the appearance of the first jets. The B-52 Stratofortress is the most famous long range jet-powered strategic bomber in the aviation history. Produced by the American company Boeing since 1955 it has been, for a long time, a symbol of the Cold War. It has been, for several years, the backbone of the United States Air Force Strategic Air Command. The B-52 has been produced in a significant number of versions that has gradually evolved the successful project to better answer to the changing in operational needs. The “G” version is the most produced B-52 variant and it has been delivered to the S.A.C. wings from the early 60s. It has been characterized by a large number of changes implemented as a more strong structure, the adoption of new avionic systems and, important issue for a strategic bomber, the longer operational range thanks to the increased fuel capacity and the possibility to adopt external fuel tanks. The Mustang is one of the worlds best known airplanes and was without doubt the best fighter plane of World War II. It was built in record time in 1943 for the European campaign and was well suited to fight the BF-109s and FW-190s of the German Luftwaffe.
