When it entered service with No.48 Squadron at RAF Manston in March 1936, the Avro Anson became the first monoplane type to achieve squadron service status and was also the first RAF aircraft to feature a retractable undercarriage.  The RAF Anson Mk.I was equipped with a fixed forward firing .303 machine gun operated by the pilot and a single Lewis gun mounted in the manually traversed dorsal turret. It could also be equipped with a modest bomb load, something which was required by submarine hunting aircraft operated by Coastal Command.  Despite the RAF entering the Second World War with 26 squadrons equipped with Avro Ansons, they were basically obsolete as a fighting machine and were quickly withdrawn to secondary training roles, a task for which the ‘Faithfull Annie’ was particularly well suited.  As part of the Empire Air Training Scheme, many thousands of aircrew destined for service with Bomber Command were trained both in the UK and overseas. One of the most important aircraft of the early jet era, the North American F-86 Sabre was in many ways a jet powered version of the company’s hugely successful P-51D Mustang from WWII and an aircraft which made full use of captured German aerodynamic research material. Featuring a distinctive 35-degree wing sweep, the Sabre also incorporated three nose mounted .50 calibre machine guns positioned on either side of the aircraft’s nose, with this jet powered gunslinger sharing many design philosophies with its famous piston powered predecessor. On entering service with the U.S Air Force in 1949, the North American F-86 Sabre would have the distinction of not only being America’s first swept wing fighter, but also the fastest fighter aircraft in the world at that time, a true aviation classic. Arctic Gladiators Aerobatic Display Team The USAF 720th Fighter Bomber Squadron formed the Arctic Gladiators team in June 1954. The display team consisted of four F-86F Sabre aircraft, which all carried the squadrons silver and red colour scheme, plus extra markings. The display team lasted just 10 years when it came to an end in 1955. Displays were limited to the US state of Alaska. The Dassault Mirage III / 5/50 is a French single-engine fighter-attack aircraft with a delta-shaped lobe, without horizontal tail. In late 1955, Dassault began building a single prototype that retained the delta wing and an enlarged fuselage that could accommodate one SNECMA Atar 101G1 engine. The resulting Mirage III-001 was flown on November 17, 1956, to reach a flight speed of 1.52Ma after just two months. Ready for Take-Off! The F-14 Tomcat is a legend of the skies, which served between 1973 and 2006 and - with powerful radar and long-range missiles - was developed for carrier-based units. Its most prolifically produced variant was the F-14A, which itself was given a number of upgrades throughout its production; late F-14As (those produced from the late 1980s) featured a more reliable engine design, and notably, the AN/AXX-1 TCS camera pod, plus the AN/ALQ-126 ECM antenna ahead of the wing gloves. Some even had alterations to the fuselage allowing installation of the TARPS reconnaissance pod. From the early 1990s, the aircraft was capable of mounting bombs on its belly; in conjunction with the AN/AAQ-25 LANTIRN pod, these were laser-guided - the F-14A had evolved into a multi-role fighter. Carrier launches required a steam catapult, to which the aircraft would be harnessed with its nose lowered, variable sweep wing forward, and flaps and slats down. Numerous flight deck crew would be engaged in the launch, including a "Shooter," who gave the signal for take-off. This model kit recreates the Grumman F-14A Tomcat. The F-14A Tomcat U.S. Navy Fighter is famous for being the first mass-production and the most-produced model among the F-14 series. This kit realistically depicts the F-14A Tomcat (Late Model) - in service from the late 1980s to the early 2000s- with wings featuring separate flaps and slats. In Desperate Defense The Hien was officially adopted by the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) in 1943, and stood out among its Japanese aircraft contemporaries in the Pacific War on account of its liquid-cooled Ha-40 engine, slimline fuselage and long, elegant wing. A number of different variants were produced, among them the Ki-61-Id which featured a 20cm-elongated nose to house 20mm cannons, plus 12.7mm machine guns in the wing. In fact, with 1,360 units it was the most prolifically produced Hien variant; its superior performance at higher altitudes meant that it was often given the brief of taking on incoming U.S. B29 bombers in the skies around the home islands of Japan. One IJA unit which notably deployed the Hien was the 244th Air Group led by Captain Teruhiko Kobayashi. Features Fuselage length: 187mm, wingspan: 250mm. The Vought F-8 Crusader was an American in-flight fighter and attacker from the post-war period. The drive, in the F-8E version, was provided by a single engine Pratt and Whitney J57-P-20A with 47.6 kN thrust without afterburner. The first flight of this machine took place in 1955. Its serial production started shortly after. In total, over 1,200 machines of this type were built. The length of the aircraft was 16.53 meters with a wingspan of 10.87 meters. The B-25 is a high-wing, all-metal structure with a retractable three-point landing gear and a double tail tail. The propulsion was two Wright Cyclon engines with the power from 1300KM to 1850KM, depending on the version. The flight of the prototype took place in 1940, and a year later mass production started. During the war, numerous versions of this bomber were produced, including B-25G (with a 75mm gun in the bow of the hull), B-25H (with a 75mm gun and 6 machine guns in the bow of the machine) and the B-25J (with 8 machine guns of 12.7mm in the bow of the fuselage). Back from the Brink The P-51D Mustang is viewed by many as one of the most successful aircraft of WWII, but this unique design with laminar flow wing still had plenty to offer after that conflict had ended. In 1950, by now having been re-named the F-51D when the U.S. Air Force was separated from the Army in 1947, it was called into action in the Korean War; airfields on the Korean peninsula were ill-suited to jet aircraft and the F-51D still had the necessary range and ordnance to roll back the years and do the job as a front line fighter. Considered by many the most capable WWII fighters, the Mustang was also active in the Korean War, and this model creates one such F-51D. Renamed from the P-51D to the F-51D to go along with the creation of the US Air Force, the Mustang seemed set for gradual retirement as the jet aircraft took center stage. With the outbreak of hostilities on the Korean peninsula, however, that all changed. United Nations forces were hard pushed in the early stages of the war, and USAF P-80s were unable to land in areas where there were frequently no proper runways. The Boeing B-47 Stratojet is an American medium-range strategic bomber in a mid-wing design, powered by six jet engines, capable of reaching subsonic speeds. Its main task was to penetrate the airspace of the USSR and drop nuclear bombs on objects located there. The prototype's first flight took place in December 1947, and introduction into service began in the summer of 1951. In the 1950s, the B-47 was the basic strategic strike force of the USAAF in a hypothetical clash with the Soviet Union. During serial production, 2,040 units of all versions of the aircraft were produced, the largest of which were version E. The B-47 Stratojet was finally withdrawn from service in 1966. The Grumman F8F Bearcat is a late-war American single-engine transport fighter. The prototype flight took place on August 21, 1944, and the F8F entered service in February 1945, reaching the Pacific in May of the same year. However, the aircraft did not take an active part in World War II. The heart of the F8F was the powerful Pratt-Whitney R-2800-34W Double Wasp engine with 2400KM and 2800KM supercharged. The Bearcat was lighter than the Hellcat, was significantly faster, and had a much better rate of climb. The F4 Corsair was also ahead of the competition in many respects. Interestingly, many design solutions in the F8F were taken from captured German Fw-190s. F8Fs were used in combat by France in the Indochina War (1946-1954). The Hawker Hunter was one of the most successful and most widespread fighters of the 1950s. It was designed by British constructor Sir Sydney Camm in 1948 as a day fighter, successor to the Gloster Meteor. The first prototype flew in July 1951, while the first machine in the F.1 production series entered service exactly three years later. The Hunter FGA.9 was a version adapted to carry out attacks against ground targets, also equipped with the more powerful Rolls-Royce Avon 207 engine, instead of the Avon 203 from the F.6 model, and thus with a better payload and range. The changes also included redesigning and strengthening the wings. A total of almost 2,000 Hawker Hunter machines of all types were built, of which about 700 were then resold to foreign recipients after decommissioning. Belgium, Sweden, Peru and India. The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 was one of the best airplanes designed during World War II. With over 20,000 units produced from 1941, together with the Messerschmitt Bf 109, it was the Luftwaffe’s most famous fighter. The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 A-8 was equipped with a BMW 801 D-2 two star radial engine, with 14 1,700 Hp cylinders, which allowed it to reach a maximum speed of 653 Km/h. It was heavily armed with 2 MG 131 machine guns and 4 MG 151 20 mm cannons. Production of the A-8 version began in the first months of 1944, characterised with an injection system able to increase engine power, for brief periods, to over 1,900 Hp. From 1944 until May 1945 in all the Focke-Wulf factories, more than 6,500 190 A-8 models were constructed, to face the ever more frequent allied air raids. The Fw190A series was developed as a support fighter for the Bf109, and became a masterpiece fighter that surpassed the Bf109. However, the Fw190A series had one weakness - the engine power suddenly dropped when the aircraft rose to altitudes of 6,000m or above. To address this weakness, the D series was developed, equipped with a liquid-cooled Jumo 213 engine, but the improvement in high altitude performance, which was the target, was not sufficient. However, due to its significantly improved flight performance at medium altitudes and below, the German Air Force decided to adopt it as a new medium-altitude fighter, and production of the first mass-produced D-series model, the D-9, began in August 1944.
