The BR 21-ton hopper wagon was based on an earlier LNER design which it continued to build in large numbers through the 1950s. Designed for carrying coal, they either had riveted or welded bodies. Grimethorpe Colliery was part of a large and highly productive Coalite facility near Barnsley in South Yorkshire. Coalite was a type of low-temperature coke used as smokeless fuel. Wagons such as these were used on the internal rail system and in coal trains. The colliery closed in 1993 and the Coalite plant closed the following year. Brake vans were an essential fixture on freight trains where the continuous brake was not available. Loose-coupled wagons only had hand-operated ‘sprag’ brakes which had to be applied individually, for example, before descending a gradient. Trains were prone to broken coupling chains, so the brake van was essential for bringing a train to a halt under such circumstances. From 1968, the requirement for a brake van to be coupled to a fitted train (wagons with vacuum brakes) was removed from the rule book. BR adopted the LNER ‘Toad D’ van as the basis for its own standard brake van design. This OO gauge model van is an example of a BR 20T Brake Van. The ‘County’ Class was the last of the GWR-designed two-cylinder 4-6-0s, with 30 built at Swindon between 1945 and 1947 to the design of Chief Mechanical Engineer, Frederick Hawksworth. This latest RailRoad County Class model depicts No. 1023 ‘County of Oxford’ in Great Western lined green. No. 1023 ‘County of Oxford’ entered service in January 1947 and was based in the West Country, including allocations to Truro, Exeter, Plymouth Laira and Penzance.  Within a year it had become part of British Railways during nationalisation, under which it served for a further 15 years, its last shed being Shrewsbury from October 1962, where it was withdrawn in March the following year and scrapped. Used for freight work and shunting, they could reach speeds of up to 60mph. Entering service as No. 16440 in July 1926, this was one of a batch built for the LMS by the North British Locomotive Company in Glasgow.  It was renumbered 7357 in 1934 and under BR became No. 47357. Withdrawn from Liverpool Edge Hill in December 1966, it went to Barry scrapyard in South Wales, from where it was purchased by the Midland Railway Centre in 1970 and restored at Derby Works, carrying LMS crimson lake livery.
