$35.95
The McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle design was initiated in the 1970s to equip the United States Air Force fighter squadrons with an advanced and high-performance jet fighter. The effective and robust aerodynamically design lay-out led to production of the two-seat “all-weather” F-15E Strike Eagle fighter-bomber. Entering into service with the USAF in the late 1980s and replacing the outdated F-111, its operational roles included ground attack, bombing and interdiction missions. It retained the flight design characteristics of the original F-15 such as the two tail drifts, sturdy mid-wing and tandem two-seater cabin, in the rear of which was the Weapon Systems Officer. From this position the officer selected the aircraft’s route management, target tracking and electronic countermeasures. The F15-E was deployed to numerous operational theaters such as the Desert Shield and Desert Storm campaigns of the early 1990s

The introduction of the Macchi MC 202 Folgore was a significant development for the fighter squadrons of the Italian Regia Aeronautica. Stylishly designed from an aerodynamical perspective, it was fitted with the powerful German DB 601 engine produced under license by the Italian aeronautical industry. The engine and overall aeronautical performance of the aircraft provided the Regia Aeronautica with a fighter capable of actively engaging Allied fighters. The flight performance compared to the previous generation of fighters equipped with radial engines, such as the Fiat G-50 and the Macchi Mc-200, was in fact much better. Manoeuvrable and fast (it was able to reach 600 km h), it was armed, in the early versions, with two 12.7 mm Breda-SAFAT machine guns installed in the nose. Only in later versions were the armaments improved with additional machine-guns installed in the wings.

The Supermarine Spitfire fighter aircraft can undoubtedly be considered one of the most famous airplanes in the history of aviation and an icon of British aeronautical engineering. A single-engine, low-wing monoplane equipped with effective offensive armament, it formed—along with the Hawker Hurricane—the backbone of the Royal Air Force’s fighter units during the Battle of Britain against the German Luftwaffe. Throughout the war, in order to counter enemy technological advancements, the Spitfire underwent continuous development in both aerodynamic configuration and powerplant options. The Spitfire Mk V, introduced in 1941 and powered by the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine rated at 1,440 hp, was produced in large numbers and widely distributed among operational squadrons. Flown by some of the most renowned Royal Air Force aces, it achieved a significant number of air-to-air victories.

Starting from the great success of the C.R. 32 “Freccia” biplane, which proved its reliability and operational efficiency during the Spanish Civil War, Fiat developed the new C.R. 42 “Falco” at the end of the 1930s. The new single-seat biplane fighter retained the fixed landing gear and open cockpit of its predecessor but introduced several innovations, such as an entirely aluminum and steel structure covered with metal and fabric. Its air-cooled radial engine, the Fiat A.74, allowed the C.R. 42 to reach a top speed of 400 km/h. The aircraft was characterized by exceptional maneuverability, highly appreciated by pilots, but suffered from the inherent limitations of the biplane configuration, which hindered its operational performance compared to more modern and powerful monoplane fighters. A dedicated Night Fighter version was produced, featuring extended exhausts to reduce visibility to the enemy during nighttime operations.

The lightly armored reconnaissance vehicles “Leichte Panzerspähwagen” Sd.Kfz. 222 and 223, were widely used on all operational fronts by the German army during the Second World War. The motorization of troops and the speed in carrying out reconnaissance and offensive tasks was a key factor in the early successes of the German Blitzkrieg. These agile four-wheel drive armored cars were designed to respond precisely to this new military strategy. Deployed by the reconnaissance battalions of the armored divisions, they broadly demonstrated both good on-road and off-road performance levels. The Sd. Kfz. 222 was armed with a 20mm L / 55 gun alongside the more traditional MG13. The Sd. Kfz. 223 was also equipped with improved radio equipment that enabled much better communications with troops on the battlefield.

The powerful Sd.Kfz. 186 “Jagdtiger” was built onto the elongated hull of the Tiger II heavy tank in the latter stages of the Second World War. Inside its mighty casemate was the 128 mm PaK 44 cannon, armed with shells that could pierce the armour of all opposing enemy tanks. This self-propelled ‘tank buster’ was deployed effectively and lethally against even the most recently introduced Soviet heavy tanks such as the IS-2. The Jagdtiger had a huge weight of almost 76 tons. The large cannon and heavy armour whilst effective, could not outweigh the poor manoeuvrability and low speeds of the vehicle in battle. The significant weight affected its reliability, and production volumes were also limited. However, the Jagdtiger for its offensive capacity alone, ranks as the high point of German production of self-propelled tank destroyers during World War 2.

The Tornado Gr.4 arose from a collaborative project between Italy, Germany, and the United Kingdom to produce a multi-role high-performance combat aircraft. The primary requirement however was to develop a ‘state of the art’ modern aircraft able to perform low-altitude penetrating strike missions. This need was met by the development of a twin-engine combat aircraft with a variable-sweep wing. The Tornado IDS (Interdictor / strike) was the first version to be released by the British Royal Air Force and designated GR.1. In 1996 the Tornado was upgraded to the Gr.4 standard which was characterized by improved operational capabilities, new avionics systems for navigation and the adoption of new ‘on-board’ technologies. These systems enabled the effective identification and tracking of targets and the weapons management of the newer generation of weapons such as GBU-12 Paveway IV bombs.
