The Aircraft Carrying Cruiser In the latter half of the Pacific War, the Japanese Navy refitted the Mogami to improve her reconnaissance ability. Construction of the Mogami was completed in July 1935, and she was initially armed with five triple 15.5cm main guns. After the withdrawal of the London Naval Treaty, she was refitted with three triple 20.3cm main guns and became a heavy cruiser. In the first half of WWII, she served at the Malayan Operation and the Battle of Sunda Strait. Later at Midway in June 1942, she was heavily damaged by an aircraft bombing raid but was able to return to port. During repairs, she was fitted with an upper deck which could carry 11 aircraft, and ten triple 25mm anti-aircraft batteries were added for defense. In May 1943, the newly shaped Mogami left the dry docks but due to damaged sustained in November of the same year from air attacks at Rabaul, she underwent further repairs and her armament was once again strengthened. In June, 1944, she served at the defense of the Mariana Islands, and it was in October at the Leyte Gulf where she saw her end when she was attacked by enemy warships suffering catastrophic damage and sank into the depths of the Mindanao Sea. Packing Ten 20.3cm Guns! The Mogami-class was designed in 1931 as 8,500-ton light cruisers armed with five triple 15.5cm gun turrets, and the lead ship of the class, the Mogami, was completed in July 1935. She was rearmed with twin 20.3cm gun turrets in 1939 and it was in this configuration that she entered the war. She and her three sister ships formed the Japanese Second Fleets's Cruiser Division 7 and were assigned to support the landings at Malaya. During the Battle of Sunda Strait in March 1942, Mogami and her sister ship Mikuma sank the heavy cruiser USS Houston and light cruiser HMAS Perth. Following extensive damage suffered at the Battle of Midway, her stern was dramatically modified to carry reconnaissance floatplanes in an effort to enhance the fleet's scouting capabilities. She took part in the Battle of Leyte Gulf in October 1944, where she was severely damaged by U.S. carrier aircraft and had to be scuttled by friendly forces. The Heavy Cruiser Tone During WWII, the Imperial Japanese Navy decided to refit the Tone-class as heavy cruisers and the construction of the Tone was completed in November 1938. As the Tone was designed to provide reconnaissance even during battle, she was therefore armed with four 20.3cm twin gun turrets which were concentrated forward of the bridge while the aft deck was dedicated to aircraft operations and could carry up to 6 floatplanes. With a rational hull design, she featured a top speed of 35 knots and had a long cruising range. As the Pacific War broke out in December 1941, the Tone served during the Pearl Harbor attack and was also apart of the Battle of Midway and the Battle of the Philippine Sea. Later in October 1944, the Battle of Leyte Gulf saw the Tone contribute in sinking the USS Gambier Bay. She was then later assigned to the Japanese Naval Academy as a training ship and returned to Kure, where she was damaged by an air attack from the U.S. Navy's Task Force 58 in March 1945. In July, she was attacked in Etajima Bay by aircraft from Task Force 38 and sank in shallow water. Features This is a 1/350 scale plastic assembly kit of the Japanese Heavy Cruiser Tone. One of Yamato's Final Escorts 1/350 Scale Japanese Destroyer Yukikaze The Yukikaze formed part of the escort force for the Yamato's final mission and returned with many of her survivors. This 1/350 scale model depicts the Yukikaze as she appeared on that fateful mission in April 1945, complete with radar equipment and increased anti-aircraft armament. Yukikaze was commissioned in January 1940 as the eighth ship of the Kagero-class and was referred to as the "lucky destroyer" since she took part in many notable actions, including Midway and Leyte Gulf, and always returned unscathed. The Big J Circa 1982 The 45,000-ton Iowa-class was the the largest and last battleships built by the U.S. Navy. The USS New Jersey, affectionately known as the "Big J," was the second ship of this class and saw service in WWII from early-1944. However, the advent of carrier airpower changed the nature of naval warfare and New Jersey was withdrawn from frontline duty after WWII in 1948. She was reactivated to participate in the Korean War and Vietnam War, but was again placed in reserve in 1969. However, thanks to President Reagan's policy of strengthening the navy, the modernization of the Iowa-class was proposed in 1981 and New Jersey was chosen as the first ship to undergo this program. She was equipped with new weaponry including Tomahawk cruise missiles, Harpoon anti-ship missiles, and Phalanx CIWS as well as new radars, ECM, and other electronic systems. She served as a missile-carrying battleship until her final decommissioning in 1991 and was eventually stricken from the U.S. Navy register in 1995. An Intimidating Presence The Iowa-class was the final, and largest of four U.S. battleship classes that were commissioned during WWII. The third of them was the USS Missouri, in June 1944. It was assigned to the Pacific Theater and participated in action around Okinawa, Iwo Jima and the main Japanese islands. In fact the signing ceremony of Japan's surrender documents took place on the Missouri's decks on September 3, 1945. Following the end of the Korean War, she was mothballed at the reserve fleet anchorage. Come 1986, however, she was refitted with various modern weaponry such as Tomahawk and Harpoon missiles, in addition to Vulcan and Phalanx weapons, to rejoin the U.S. Navy. Along with her sister ship the Wisconsin, the Missouri was deployed in the Gulf War in 1991 and fired some 28 Tomahawk cruise missiles on the first day of the conflict. In total, she fired in excess of 750 16-inch rounds in support of land troops. In March 1992 she was decommissioned once more after some 50 years of service, and she now resides in Pearl Harbor as a museum ship. The Flagship of the Japanese forces The Japanese battleship Yamato was laid down in November 1937 and commissioned in December 1941, giving notice to the world of the level of Japanese ship-building technology. A truly massive ship, it had a waterline length of 256m, a beam of 38.9m, a displacement of around 70,000 tons and nine 46cm guns which had a maximum range of 41km and were capable of piercing 43cm of armor from 30km away. Her armor, meanwhile, weighed in at an staggering 21,000 tons. The hull of the ship had been kept as short as was possible, with defensive considerations meaning the bridge, gun turrets and mechanical sections concentrated in the center of the vessel. Beneath the waterline, she employed a bulbous bow that protruded 3 meters and contributed to increased wavemaking resistance. She featured in actions including the Battle of Leyte Gulf and the Battle of Midway. On April 7th 1945 she came under attack from over three hundred U.S. aircraft while on the way to Okinawa, sinking to the bottom of the ocean. A Force to be Reckoned With The Musashi was the second ship in the Yamato class of battleships built by the Japanese Navy. Her most distinguishing features were her nine huge 46cm guns, which had a range of 41km and could penetrate 43cm of armor plating at a distance of up to 30km. The massive ship had a displacement of over 70,000 tons, and was laid down on March 29, 2013. Some two and a half years later in November 1940 she was launched and finally commissioned for service on August 5, 1942. In order to provide the best defensive capability possible, she employed an astonishing 21,000 tons of armor plating; in addition, the ship was made a short as possible and its layout grouped key parts such as the bridge in the center of the ship. After serving as the flagship of the Japanese fleet from February 1943 to March 1944, she took part in combat operations in the Philippines. On October 24, 1944, Musashi was attacked by several U.S. planes and took a number of torpedo hits leading to her sinking. Always on the Front Line The Kagero was completed in November 1939, the lead ship of the Kagero class of destroyers that was the first constructed by the Japanese after their exit from the London Naval Treaty in 1937. The Kagero class packed a heavy punch with three twin 12.7cm gun placements and two 61cm quadruple torpedo tubes, and combined that with a top speed of 35 knots, plus a range of 5,000nmi at 18 knots. The Kagero took part in some of the most renowned actions on the seas in WWII, including the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, the Battle of Midway in 1942, and major assasults on Rabaul and Colombo. Although largely starved of opportunities to show what it could do, in the November 1942 Battle of Tassafaronga the Kagero used its Type 93 "long lance" torpedoes to great effect, together with eight other vessels scoring hits on the US ships Minneapolis, New Orleans, Pensacola and Northampton, crippling and eventually sinking the latter. Many of her sorties were otherwise made ferrying reinforcements and supplies to Japanese bases. She met her end in May 1943, sunk by mines in the Blackett Strait off of Kolombangara.
