During the first half of the Second World War, the Messerschmitt Bf109 E was the main fighter of the German airforce. The E-4 housed a 1,100hp Daimler Benz DB 601Aa engine and was armed with two 7.92mm machine guns on the nose, as well as a 20mm cannon on each wing. For some aircraft, bullet-proof glass was used to reinforce the front of the canopy. In addition, a 20mm canon, which ran through a tube in the propeller was supposed to be installed but was unsuccessful. Displaying superb acceleration and diving ability, the E-type planes overpowered the RAF's Hawker hurricane and equaled the Spitfire fighters in the Battle of Britain. However, with a flight range of only 560km, the E-4 planes were limited to just fifteen minutes of combat over British skies. Thus, the bombers were not given sufficient support and sustained heavy damage. As a result, the Luftwaffe's strategy to bomb England into surrender ended in failure. To deal with this drawback, the E-4 planes were equipped with additional 300L fuel tank. These improved fighters, called E-7, were first deployed at the end of 1940. After the Battle of Britain, the E-4/7 planes were sent to the front lines of Northern Africa. As the Bf109 F-type fighter's production was advanced, the E-4/7 was retired from the front lines. However, some veteran pilots continued to use the E-4/7 mainly for ground support duty until the summer of 1942. One of the most famous planes of WWII, the P-47D Thunderbolt was an outstanding single seat fighter plane excelling in high-altitude bomber escort and low-altitude ground attack. The P-47D featured a turbo-supercharged engine and was active on both the European and Pacific fronts. To solve the problem of insufficient visibility of earlier models, later Thunderbolt models were redesigned with a transparent bubble canopy, leading to the birth of the "Bubbletop". This is Tamiya’s 1/72 scale plastic model of the Vought F4U-1A Corsair. While the maneuverability and power of the F4U-1 fighter were adequate, limited all-round visibility resulting from the early frame-like canopy, and the tendency for the left and right wings to stall at different speeds indicated the need for improvements resulting in the new F4U -1A. The improvements included the implementation of a new bubble canopy for better all-around visibility, a longer rear wheel leg for better forward visibility, and an almost hardly evident 15cm strip attached to the leading edge of the right wing to ensure that both wings decelerate in the same way. The completed model is 14.1cm long and 17.3cm wide. A Little Japanese Gem The Mitsubishi A6M Zero was the Japanese Navy's mainstay fighter throughout WWII. The A6M5 (Model 52) variant followed the A6M3 (Model 22) and was developed to counter the ever more powerful American fighters. This variant featured an exhaust system which provided a small amount of thrust and rounded wingtips which improved dive and roll performance as well as maximum speed. It was first introduced in the autumn of 1943 and went on to serve valiantly until the end of the war. Features Distinctive features of the A6M5, including the refined engine cowling, exhaust system, and short wingspan with rounded wingtips, are accurate reproduced.  Detailed cockpit and landing gear wells.  Parts to depict open and closed canopies included.  Also comes with parts for 330-liter drop tank as well as 3 marking options. From the early days of the Second Sino-Japanese War to the end of hostilities in the Pacific, the Mitsubishi Zero served as the Imperial Japanese Navy's main frontline fighter. The first major mass-produced version was the A6M2b. Equipped with 50cm folding wingtips to enable it to fly from aircraft carriers, it was flown by expert pilots and took part in operations such as the Pearl Harbor attack and the invasion of the Philippines, its 3,000km range, powerful 20mm cannon armament, and legendary maneuverability quickly earning the respect of Allied air crews. Features This is a 1/72 scale model of the Mitsubishi Zero A6M2b, fuselage length: 126mm, wingspan: 167mm. The flowing, graceful form of the fighter is reproduced, including the engine cowling and long wings. The A6M3/3a Zero fighter (Model 22) was designed to correct some of the shortcomings of its A6M3 (Model 32) predecessor, which included reduced flight range. This entailed the Model 22 being given standard-length 12m wings and receiving a larger fuel tank, measures which were largely successful. A version was also produced with longer machine gun barrels. The Model 22 was first assigned to flight groups from early 1943, and saw action in the hotly-contested Solomon Islands area. Features This is a 1/72 scale plastic assembly model kit.
