Grumman F-14A Tomcat "Black Knights" Ever since its first flight in 1970, the U.S. Navy's F-14 Tomcat has been one of the best top Air Defense Fighter. From 1990, in addition to its role as an interceptor, the F-14A, noted for its long range and superior weapons systems was designated as an air-to-ground strike plane. With this new role, the Tomcat was fitted with a new weapons arsenal. Since 1996, the F-14A employs the AN/AAQ-14 targeting pod, referred to as the LANTIRN. This targeting pod gives the F-14A precision bombing capability by procuring targets for nose-mounted infrared laser or other laser guided weapons. The AN/AAQ-14 targeting pod contains a high-resolution, forward-looking infrared sensor (which displays an infrared image of the target to the pilot), a laser designator-rangefinder for precise delivery of laser-guided munitions, target tracking software, and more. The LANTIRN, combined with GBU-16 and GBU-24 guided bombs, enables precision striking with a minute margin of error from several meters down to tens of centimeters. This precision can be realized at long-range. The VF-154 Black Knights is attached to the USS Kittyhawk, homeported at Yokosuka Harbor, Japan. The Black Knights were formed after WWII, and were deployed to both the Korean and Vietnam War. Tamiya now proudly adds the F-16 Fighting Falcon to this distinguished lineup, offering our most detailed ever 1/32 scale aircraft model, and setting whole new standards in large-scale aircraft modeling. Regarded as one of the world's leading jet fighters, the F-16 Fighting Falcon is currently employed by more than 20 countries, and has served in actual combat since the 1980's. The F-16CJ Block 50 variant is the newest F-16 currently being deployed to U.S. units. Major upgrades to the Block 50 included a more powerful turbo General Electric engine, AGM-88 HARM (High-Speed Anti-Radiation Missile) and targeting system. The F-16CJ is used for "Wild Weasel" SEAD (Suppression of Enemy Air Defense) missions, which include searching out and destroying radar and missile sites. This is the first ever 1/32 scale F-16 model to replicate the characteristic large air intake duct, nicknamed "Big Mouth". The F110-GE-129 jet engine is also replicated in precise detail, and can slide into place on a hook and rail system exactly like the actual aircraft. The entire engine can also be displayed outside the aircraft using the included cart. This model achieves a level of accuracy only possible in such a large-scale work. The upper surfaces of the wings are molded to the main body of the plane in one single piece, creating a "Blended Body" which artfully depicts the F-16's beautiful, streamlined form and proportions. The model features screw-mounted main body and die-cast landing gears with actual rubber tires for extra durability. This model makes use of the newly developed mini poly caps to ensure that missiles, ECM pod and external fuel tanks are removable and interchangeable even after assembly. The Legend Reborn From the early days of the Second Sino-Japanese War to the end of hostilities in the Pacific, the Mitsubishi Zero served as the main front line fighter of the Imperial Japanese Navy. The first mass-produced version was the Model 21, which was equipped with 50cm folding wingtips, landing hook, and radio direction finder for long-range carrier-based operations. Flown by expert pilots, the Model 21 took part in daring operations such as the Pearl Harbor attack and the invasion of the Philippines, and it's 3000km range, powerful 20mm cannon armament, and legendary maneuverability quickly earned the respect of Allied aircrews. The Mitsubishi A6M5 Zero was the Japanese Navy's main fighter throughout the Pacific Theater during WWII. In the latter half of the war, the model 52 Zero, a refined version of the model 22, aimed to take on the ever increasing numbers of high-performance U.S. aircraft. It featured a shorter 11m wingspan with rounded wingtips, was powered by the same 1130hp Nakajima "Sakae" engine as seen in the model 22 Zero, and had the new exhaust propulsion system which gave it a 565km/h top speed. The A6M5 came armed with two 7.7mm machine guns and 20mm belt-feed type cannons on each wing. Deployment of the A6M5 began in the autumn of 1943, and they saw action at the Solomon campaign as well as the Marianas. It fearlessly defended Japan against overwhelming numbers and superior U.S. aircraft up until the very last day of the war. The legendary Spitfire was the representative British fighter of WWII and many served with various air forces well into the 1950s. Among these was the Mk.IX, a variant powered by the Rolls-Royce Merlin 60 series engine which was developed to counter the Luftwaffe's Fw 190. Most of the Mk.IX aircraft came equipped with the C wing, two 20mm cannons, and four 7.7mm machine guns. The Mk.IXc, which was issued to units in July 1942, featured a top speed of 669.46 km/h and had superior maneuverability. The Mk.IXc not only helped the RAF regain air superiority over the English Channel, but it was also the second most produced Spitfire variant with 5,500 built. The True Successor to the Mk.V The legendary Spitfire was the representative British fighter of WWII. Many variants were built and among these was the Mk.VIII, a variant developed to be the replacement for the RAF's previous mainstay Spitfire, the Mk.V. The Mk.VIII was fitted with a Rolls-Royce Merlin 60-series engine, larger radiators, and an air filter as standard. Other improvements included fuel tanks added in the wings, retractable tail wheel, shortened ailerons, and enlarged rudder and elevators. From the latter half of 1943, the Mk.VIII were deployed to the Mediterranean and Pacific Theaters and saw service with RAF, USAAF, RCAF, and RAAF units. A Case of a Good Bubble The legendary Supermarine Spitfire is often credited with saving England during WWII. Among its many variants was the Mk.XVI, which was a Mk.IX airframe that was powered by a Merlin 266 engine license-built by Packard Motor Car Company in the United States. Most Mk.XVIs featured the larger rudder and E Type wing with two 20mm cannons and two 12.7mm machine guns. With the introduction of the teardrop canopy, the rear upper fuel tank capacity was reduced to 33 gal. and that of the forward lower fuel tank was increased to 48 gal. to compensate. 1,054 Mk.XVIs produced were from September 1944 until July 1945. During the war, they were deployed on the European front and served as fighter-bombers. In the post-war period, the Mk.XVI was used by the RAF as well as the Belgian and Greek air forces until the early-1950s. The Supermarine Spitfire was designed by R.J. Mitchell and its distinctive silhouette makes it one of the most widely-recognized fighters of WWII. Famous for its exploits during the Battle of Britain, the Spitfire continued to evolve to counter newer Axis aircraft. As a result of this evolution, numerous variants of the Spitfire were born and served with distinction in the RAF as well as the air forces of many other countries until well after the end of WWII. The Spitfre Mk.XVI was almost identical to the Mk.IX in nearly all aspects except that most were powered by a Packard-built Merlin 266 engine which had taller dimensions than the Rolls Royce 66 engine and featured a bubble canopy with a “low back” fuselage. Other new structural changes saw the Mk.XVI equipped with a larger 96 gallon main fuel tank, as well as two additional fuel tanks installed at the rear of the fuselage and a larger oil sump to allow it to flylonger distances. Mk.XVIes were mainly used in ground-attack roles and came with the “E” armament configuration of two 20mm cannons and two 12.7mm Browning machine guns. Also, as concrete tarmacs became more common as the war progressed, changes to the camber angle of the Spitfire’s landing gears were made to make for more efficient landings and take-offs. With the changes made to the new gun and cannon positioning, ammunition ejection ports, and the landing gear design, the wings featured new bulges compared to the Mk.IX. The Mk.XVIe, served with distinction throughout Europe for the latter half of the war. Features Challenging model production technology limits, the engine cowlings have an amazing 0.4mm thickness to allow for a fully accurate scale representation of the engine. The legendary U.S. Air Force P-51D Mustang originally used a Hamilton Standard propeller, but shortages forced the U.S. to fit some models with an Aeroproducts propeller. They were renamed the P-51K and mainly assigned to the Asian Theater. The P-51K and P-51D possessed both speed and the ability to fly long-range missions, and could serve as bomber escorts or attack enemy ground installations themselves. In addition to the fighter role, some P-51s were equipped with cameras and used as reconnaissance aircraft. Such aircraft were based on the P-51D and designated the F-6D. A Unique Aircraft The Corsair was originally developed by the American company Vought in response to a February 1938 request for proposal for a carrier fighter aircraft by the U.S. Navy. Designed to surpass even land-based fighters, it featured a 2,000hp engine and massive 4-meter propeller and - most memorably - a unique inverted gull wing. This first version of the Corsair (which means "pirate") was given the nickname "birdcage" due to the large frame sections used in the canopy structure. Thrown into front line action from February 1943 onwards, the aircraft took part in the U.S. military's counter-offensive which was based in the Solomon Islands; it was mainly used by the U.S. Marine Corps and used an advantage in speed and armor over the Japanese Zero fighter to prove a valuable weapon in the arsenal of the U.S. military. A Big Step on the Path to Greatness With a highly complex P&W R-2800 engine generating 2,000hp, a 4-meter propeller and striking gull wings, the Corsair was certainly a memorable aircraft; it was effective, too, and was one of the mainstays of the U.S. Navy. The F4U-1A variant was assigned to units from Summer 1943, and featured upgrades such as a semi-bubble canopy (to improve previously limited visibility), plus the ability to carry bombs of up to 1,000lb. It saw a large amount of action in fighting with the Japanese Navy around the Solomon Islands; the Corsair continued to serve through the Korean War in the guise of further variants, the bomber capability pioneered by the F4U-1A proving a most effective addition to the aircraft's inherent ability. Behold the Wooden Wonder in Stunning 1/32! Drawn up as a high speed, unarmed bomber, the twin engine De Havilland Mosquito fulfilled that role and so many more for the RAF and other Allied air forces during WWII, taking advantage of performance so astonishing it earned the aircraft its nickname: Wooden Wonder. (That, and the fact it was made largely of wood, in contrast to most of its contemporaries.) The FB Mk.VI fighter-bomber variant, which first appeared in the skies in Spring 1943, packed a punch with four 7.7mm nose-mounted machine guns and four powerful 20mm auto-cannons, plus the ability to carry four 500lb bombs. With around 2,700 produced it was the most prolifically manufactured Mosquito variant, and this high performance, multi-role aircraft was relied on to attack sensitive enemy targets such as SS facilities, V1 flying bomb sites, and munitions factories, taking advantage of its precision low-altitude bombing skills. Features This is a 1/32 scale plastic model assembly kit. Fuselage length: 394.5mm, wingspan: 515.5mm. The graceful, elegant lines of the Mosquito FB Mk.VI are captured with stunning accuracy. Carrying on the Fight With its combination of high speed and heavy armament, the Corsair was a formidable aircraft active in the latter half of WWII. As a versatile bird it had a number of variants, among them the F4U-1D, which was the first Corsair to be officially deployed on U.S. aircraft carriers. Features unique to the F4U-1D included a frame-less semi-bubble canopy, thicker propeller blade roots, a raised pilot's seat and more. Armament took the form of six 12.7mm machine guns mounted in the gull wing, with a pylon under each side of the root allowing it to carry two 1,000lb bombs or drop tanks. The outer wing could be fitted with 4 rockets on each side. The F4U-1D was an important presence on its carriers, joining attacks on the Japanese archipelago in February 1945 as U.S. forces advanced. This is the D variant of the popular Corsair World War II fighter plane. It uses new parts to recreate features specific to the F4U-1D, which was the first Corsair to be cleared for use on aircraft carriers. This fighter-bomber could carry drop tanks on new hard points under the wing root, and up to 8 rockets under the outer wing. It provided invaluable close support for ground troops during landings in places such as the Philippines and Okinawa, and continued to serve after WWII, in Korea. F4U-1D Specific Detail differences from previous variants The semi-bubble canopy was altered during production to remove upper side frames and improve visibility. Propeller blades were thicker from the root. Hardpoints under the wing root allowed carrying of bombs and drop tanks. The tail wheel cover had a new fairing to improve aerodynamics. Back from the Brink The P-51D Mustang is viewed by many as one of the most successful aircraft of WWII, but this unique design with laminar flow wing still had plenty to offer after that conflict had ended. In 1950, by now having been re-named the F-51D when the U.S. Air Force was separated from the Army in 1947, it was called into action in the Korean War; airfields on the Korean peninsula were ill-suited to jet aircraft and the F-51D still had the necessary range and ordnance to roll back the years and do the job as a front line fighter. Considered by many the most capable WWII fighters, the Mustang was also active in the Korean War, and this model creates one such F-51D. Renamed from the P-51D to the F-51D to go along with the creation of the US Air Force, the Mustang seemed set for gradual retirement as the jet aircraft took center stage. With the outbreak of hostilities on the Korean peninsula, however, that all changed. United Nations forces were hard pushed in the early stages of the war, and USAF P-80s were unable to land in areas where there were frequently no proper runways. The F-51D stepped in and performed admirably in a ground attack role as the United Nations forces pushed back. Features 1/32 scale plastic model assembly kit. Length: 308mm, wingspan: 354mm. Development of the Space Shuttle began in 1972, and the craft designed to connect the earth to outer space enjoyed a 30-year career between its first successful test flight in 1981 and its retirement in 2011. It was a truly multi-mission craft, over its 135 launches taking modules to the International Space Station, releasing satellites, and even hosting experiments in its onboard lab.
