Here Comes a Turbo
Three wins in 1980 for the Renault RE-20 Turbo were a great reward for the French company's work on the turbocharged engine, and proved to the world that turbo technology had the potential to win races. Renault was the first manufacturer to enter a turbo engine car in the top class of racing, in 1977: the RS-01, and by 1979 they had developed it further into a twin turbo design, employed in the ground effect RS-10, which scored the first ever turbo engine car victory. The following year, it was the turn of the RE-20, which weighed in 30kg lighter than the RS-10 and employed a 1.5-liter twin turbo V6 DOHC engine; limited by regulations to half of the capacity of naturally aspirated rivals, it nonetheless provided around 520hp. The car featured a ground effect design with a slimline central monocoque flanked by side pontoons, and its success arguably paved the way for the turbo era of top class racing.

A Revolutionary Presence
This Tamiya large-scale plastic model recreates the Tyrrell P34. Arguably the most radical design ever to compete in Formula 1, the Tyrrell P34 caused a sensation when it was revealed to the public. The car's designer, Derek Gardner, wanted to reduce drag by making the frontal area smaller, so instead of two normal-sized tires he used four small diameter tires that could be steered together. This also meant that the tires would be shrouded by the nose, further reducing drag. Making its debut at the 1976 Spanish GP, the car proved to be competitive, and it reached the pinnacle of its success with drivers Jody Scheckter and Patrick Depailler finishing 1st and 2nd respectively at the Swedish GP.

A Pioneer
Renowned as one of the pioneers of the wing car era, the Lotus Type 78 debuted in the 1977 Argentine Grand Prix to much acclaim for its sleek, aerodynamic form. The inverted gull wing shaping on the underside of its side pontoons generated significant downforce via the "ground effect," without adding significant drag, giving the Type 78 exemplary cornering speed. In the highly capable hands of Mario Andretti and Gunnar Nilsson, it triumphed in the United States Grand Prix West, and the Spanish, French, Italian and Belgian Grand Prix. It raced into the first half of the 1978 season, and helped put the Lotus team firmly back on the map.
This model kit recreates the famous Lotus Type 78, which was driven by Mario Andretti and Gunnar Nilsson. The Lotus Type 78 made its name in history as the first full-fledged wing car in Formula One. The race car has a slender body based on a sharp wedge shape, and the inside of the side pontoon has a wing shape that is upside down with inverted aircraft- like wings to achieve a greater down force effect without increasing air resistance.

Racing Technology Adapted to the Streets
The Porsche Carrera was unleashed on the public at the 2003 Geneva Motor Show, and wowed the world; its shape was based upon an exceptionally lightweight and strong carbon fiber monocoque and rear sub-frame, in addition to body panels made from the same material. It was propelled by a midship 5.7-liter V10 engine that blasted out 612hp and was an evolution of a powerplant developed for use in the toughest and most famous of endurance races, the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Other technological advances incorporated into the design were a small and super-lightweight ceramic composite clutch, pushrod-actuated double wishbone suspension, ceramic composite brakes, plus an underpanel and diffuser combination which offered supreme downforce. Infused with patented state-of-the-art technologies, Porsche's Carrera GT embodied both the high-performance of a racing car with the usability and safety of a road car. It departed from Porsche's tradition of horizontally-opposed engines and in doing so became the company's new flagship which only 1,270 lucky owners around the world would have the opportunity to experience.

Dressed to Impress
Released in October 1969, the Nissan Fairlady Z went on to become a world-renowned high performance sports car. A stylish long nose, short deck body was married with a 2-liter inline-6 engine and cushioned by 4-wheel independent strut suspension. The 240Z was an export version with 2.4-liter engine that was also released for the Japanese market in November 1971 on the back of excellent race performance. The top-grade variant of the car was the 240ZG, whose form was accented with the long "G nose" and FRP over fenders, and a plethora of tune-up parts was available to those faithful owners who wanted to tweak its performance and stamp their individuality on this legendary car.

Riviera Legend
The Tyrrell team made their Formula One bow in 1968 using the Matra Ford and quickly achieved excellent results, with a drivers' championship for Jackie Stewart the next season. From the 11th race of 1970 in Canada, the team debuted the in-house designed 001, which paved the way for the 003 and 002 cars piloted in 1971 by Stewart and François Cevert respectively. While a unique integrated front wing and nose with radiator just below caught the eye, the 003 utilized an otherwise orthodox, reliable setup. Stewart achieved 6 wins in 11 races including the Monaco GP, more than enough for that season's drivers' and constructors' titles. Now, the car is immortalized in Tamiya 1/12 scale.
