In the latter half of WWII, in order to counter German tanks, the Russian army used the JS-2 heavy tank's chassis to create the JSU-152 heavy self-propelled gun. It featured improved armor protection and a simple superstructure which housed a massive ML-20S 152mm howitzer. They officially entered combat in the summer of 1944 during Operation Bagration, where Russian soldiers gave it the nickname Zveroboy (beast killer) due to its ability to destroy Tiger I and Panther tanks. The JSU-152 proved its effectiveness against both tanks and fortifications all the way to the Battle of Berlin and greatly contributed to the Russian victory. Expert Battlefield Support During WWII, the British military commissioned various types of civilian pick-up trucks into military service. These "Light Utility Cars" regardless of the make, brand, and year of production were all pressed into service and were affectionately called “Tilly” by British personnel. The average "Light Utility Car" was powered by a 30hp engine and could be seen at various fronts. In the latter half of WWII, other vehicles took over frontline responsibilities, but it continued to roll along until the end of the Great War supporting the Allied forces in various roles at airfields and in communication use. One Tough Finnish Tank During the Soviet-Finland War during WWII, the Finnish Army were provided with Sturmgeschütz III Ausf.G tanks from Germany which later became their main tank until the end of the war. Equipped to the low profile hull of the Ausf.G was a powerful, long-barreled 7.5cm anti-tank gun. Once they had arrived in Finland, their Schürzen armor was removed, tool boxes were placed on the rear deck, and modifications were made in order to install Russian DT machine guns. In the spring of 1944, the Ausf.G fought against Russian armored forces and protected Finland from invasion. Afterwards, to improve defensive capabilities of the Ausf.G, concrete blocks and logs were attached to the tank's hull. Even after WWII, the Ausf.G continued to serve the Finnish army with distinction up until the 1960s. Features This is a 1/35 scale plastic assembly model kit. Length: 189mm, Width: 85mm. The M8 was the first self-propelled howitzer to equip the U.S. Army during WWII. It combined the hull of an M5 light tank with an open-top turret which was armed with a short-barreled 75mm howitzer and a 12.7mm machine gun. The howitzer was capable of firing high-explosive, anti-tank, and smoke rounds up to a range of 8,800m. The vehicle was officially accepted in May 1942 and 1,800 examples were built from September of that year until January 1944. They were deployed starting from mid-1943 and they used their armament and mobility to good effect in the fire-support role in the Italian, Western European, and Pacific Theaters. Essential Equipment for Early-WWII German Vehicles Jerry cans used by the German army featured a functional design. Early-type cans featured simple cross-shaped indentations for structural reinforcement while later types had more complex indentation patterns. Early-type cans were seen from the Polish campaign to North Africa and the beginning of the Russian campaign, and some were continuously used until the latter half of the war. The Simca 5 was a version of the Fiat 500 "Topolino," manufactured by French concern Simca, and features such as hydraulic brakes and independent front suspension were advanced for the day. Its engine was placed in the front, and there was plenty of space for two to ride in the Simca 5, making this little vehicle a big success with around 65,000 units manufactured between 1936 and 1940. 6,000 of those were manufactured after the German occupation of France, many of them supplied to the Wehrmacht and deployed in various theaters of battle. The German heavy tank destroyer Elefant was armed with a powerful 8.8cm L/71 gun which could knock out T-34 tanks at a distance of 2,000m, protected by armor up to 200mm thick, and equipped with advanced features such as a hybrid drivetrain. It had its roots in the Porsche-designed Ferdinand, which was first deployed into combat during the Battle of Kursk in 1943. The lessons learned from that battle resulted in modifications including the addition of a commander's cupola, a machine gun for infantry defense, and better tracks and the enhanced vehicle received the new designation Elefant in February 1944. Elefants were deployed to Italy and the Eastern Front, where they continued to defend against Allied forces until the final skirmishes of the war. Made for the Streets During the Iraq War of 2003 and the subsequent occupation, the M1 Abrams served as the main tank of the US military. While the M1A2 SEP was a highly modernized version including electronics improvements and so on, the US military found that it faced a new threat during the occupation from 2004 onwards, namely in close-quarters urban situations with weapons such as mines and hand-held weapons. Tank Urban Survival Kits (TUSK) were developed to counter such threats, and the original TUSK I added block-shaped reactive armor to the tank sides as well as an anti-mine underplate, additional M2 heavy machine gun above the main gun, and shields for the loader. The TUSK II upgrade further added shields for the commander and the distinctive tile-shaped reactive armor, although these were not fitted to all M1A2 SEPs. Its gun could penetrate armor of up to 85mm from a range of 1,000 meters. While the fighting compartment was roofless, it did feature 50mm-thick armored plate on the front. It was produced from 1943 and around 140 were made in total, to be deployed with armored divisions. In January of 1945, 4 Type 1s were part of the 2nd Tank Division on the Philippine island of Luzon, where they engaged in fighting with U.S. M4 Sherman tanks. A Familiar Face from the Vietnam War 1959 marked the first appearance of the M151, a vehicle which stood the test of time and served the U.S. military for a number of years. Based on a lightweight semi-monocoque and independent suspension with coil springs, it represented a leap forward in design from WWII predecessors. The M151A1 was an evolution of the vehicle which debuted in 1964 and featured design tweaks such as rear suspension improvements and turn signals on the front fenders.
