One of the most renowned military commanders of the Second World War was Bernard Law Montgomery. Having begun his military career during the First World War, he steadily advanced through the ranks of the British Army and entered WWII as commander of the 3rd Division of the British Expeditionary Force in France. In the autumn of 1942, Montgomery took command of British forces in North Africa and soon achieved a decisive victory over the famous “Desert Fox” — German Field Marshal Erwin Rommel. By December 1943, Montgomery was commanding the 21st Army Group and had become the Commander of Allied ground forces in Europe. Naturally, the success of Montgomery’s operations owed much to the officers and soldiers of his staff. Among the vehicles he used as a mobile command post was a specially modified army Leyland Retriever truck. Built on the standard chassis, it featured a purpose-built superstructure that served as a field office, divided into two rooms.

WWII German Military Medical Personnel In Wehrmacht, the direct medical care for wounded soldiers on the battlefield was provided by medics who were part of platoons, companies, and battalions. They could be distinguished from ordinary infantrymen by their special medical pouches, additional water flasks, patches, and armbands. They were also able to evacuate the wounded to first aid stations or collection points. Infantry companies also included non-commissioned officers of the medical service, and at the battalion level, a military doctor (Assistenz or Oberarzt) was responsible for centralized medical care. However, it was not possible to carry out serious medical operations in the battalion; this was the responsibility of the divisional medical service, which could also include sanitary convoys that were engaged in the centralized transportation of the wounded.

FWD Type B WWI US Ammunition Truck The American company FWD (Four Wheel Drive Auto Company) was once an innovative enterprise that developed and produced four-wheel-drive vehicles. One of these cars, the 3-ton FWD Type B truck, had a classic hoodless layout with the driver’s position above the engine compartment. The driver was located directly on the hood of the 4-cylinder engine with a capacity of 36 hp, the radiator was located in front of the cabin. During World War I, the U.S. Army ordered 15,000 of these vehicles, known as the “Truck, 3-ton, Model 1917.” In fact, over 14,000 units were delivered, with additional orders coming from Great Britain and Russia. At the same time, the U.S. Ordnance Department developed a body model for transporting ammunition, and some FWD Type B vehicles were equipped with similar bodies. These ammunition transporters were used by the American Expeditionary Forces in Europe, where they carried artillery shells and various equipment. Additionally, they were involved in towing artillery pieces.
