Tamiya remains dedicated to adding more variety to the 1/48 Military Miniature Series and now proudly brings you the final variant of the Panzer III, the Ausf.N. Line it up with the previously released Ausf.L and Sturmgeschutz III variants for a display of the Panzer IIIs development history. The rugged Panzerkampfwagen III was used in all theaters by the German army in WWII and was well-liked due to its reliability. However, the size limitations of the tanks chassis meant that armament upgrades were limited and its usefulness as a battle tank diminished as the Allies produced more advanced and powerful tanks. With this realization, the final variant of the Pz.kpfw.III, the Ausf.N, was modified into an infantry support tank armed with the short-barreled 75mm gun from the Pz.kpfw.IV, which was being upgraded with more powerful guns. Beginning from June 1942, 700 of these Ausf.N variants, also known as Sturmpanzer III, were made andwere often assigned to independent Panzer Battalions to protect the heavier Tiger tanks. The 5mm Schurzen armor skirt modifications were added from the spring of 1943.

The 2 1/2 ton cargo truck supported the lifeline of the Allied armies in WWII and Korea, carrying supplies and soldiers to the front. Over 800,000 were built during WWII, with many variations produced for various tasks. The most common flatbed cargo truck had an off-road cargo capacity of 2 1/2 tons and a paved road capacity of 4 tons. First produced in 1941, the Steyr Type 1500A/01 was a light truck design used to carry military personnel. It was chosen to be one of the vehicles to be produced under the Schell Plan, which sought to standardize German vehicle production to increase efficiency. The Steyr was powered by an air-cooled 8-cylinder engine with 85hp, and could carry up to 8 passengers. With its rugged suspension and 4WD, the truck had excellent off-road capabilities and could also travel at up to 100km/h on-road. A total of 12,450 were produced until 1944 and served on every front that the German army fought in.

With the quick advances of their mechanized Blitzkrieg tactics, vehicles were needed to move the German army commanders and generals from place to place as their army pushes forward. One such vehicle was a 4-door version of the Austrian Steyr 1500A/01 light truck, which was powered by an 85hp 8-cylinder engine and had good cross-country performance. As this was a commander”s vehicle, modifications included a more spacious 5-person cabin as opposed to the truck”s 8-person capacity. The cabin was also fitted with leather seats and a front passenger seat that could recline to form a bed. High-level German commanders on all fronts used them as their personal vehicles.

During WWII, the Flakvierling 38 was used as an antiaircraft gun against low altitude fighter-bomber aircraft. The original single-gun Flak 38 was improved upon with the 4x20mm Flakvierling 38 coming about. The weapon could fire at a maximum rate of 1,800 rounds per minute and even the regular rate of 800 rounds per minute was a force to be reckoned with. It was feared by allied fighter pilots who called it "the Four-Barreled Demon". It was a compact gun that could be quickly set up anywhere thanks to its trailer, and was widely used to defend airfields. In addition, they were also mounted on various vehicle platforms serving as mobile antiaircraft guns defending German airspace.

During WWII at the North African front, the Crusader tank became the main force for the British Tank Corps and often faced off against the German Panzer III. The Crusader Mk.III came with reinforced front armor and a new powerful 6-pounder gun to help deal with the Panzer III. The Crusader tanks were first put into action in the autumn of 1942 at El Alamein, Egypt. Later after the long chase and even at the large-scale Tunisia front, the Crusader Mk.III tanks contributed greatly to the allied victory over the Axis forces.

The M20 was a high-speed general-purpose armored vehicle designed to meet the needs of the U.S. Army"s mechanized forces during WWII. It was essentially an M8 Greyhound, but without the gun turret. In its place was an open-topped hull superstructure fitted with a .50 caliber Browning machine gun on a ring mount. Other infantry weapons, including an anti-tank bazooka, were kept inside the vehicle. This AFV was used mainly as a command and reconnaissance vehicle equipped with radios, but its excellent rough terrain performance and high speed meant it also served as an armored personnel carrier as well as general cargo carrier

The 4x4 which was ahead of its time
From the request of the Japanese army, the world's first light weight 4x4 vehicles were developed and named "Kurogane". From December 1937 after various improvements, a new type was produced. It carried 3 passengers, had a 1,400cc 33 horse power air cooled V two type cylinder engine. It had front wheel independent, rear wheel leaf spring suspension and large tires. From 1930 to 1939, about 4,800 vehicles of various types were made. The lightweight 4x4 Kurogane was used for reconnaissance and communication in China, South East Asia, and the Pacific.

In June 1941, the German authorities realized that their tanks were inferior to those of the Soviet army, such as the T34 and KV-1. To cope against the pressure, it was decided as an interim solution to use obsolete Czech built 38(t) tank chassis and arm them with captured Soviet 7.62cm Pak36(r) guns, creating a fearsome machine. From February 1942,the first 18 Marder III"s were put into action in North Africa, and by November the same year 344 had been built, with another 19 built by November 1943. The Marder III could be seen wreaking havoc on every front during WWII.

The German Afrika-Korps uniform was basically the same as the ones used in Europe except for the open-necked collar. Each kind of cap and pants were made from olive green colored cotton but due to the strong hot sun, the color soon faded showing various color tones. Additionally, due to the cracking and breaking of the leather shoes and belts, they were soon replaced with canvas ones. As these uniforms and equipment for use in hot and tropical zones were superior in productivity, a great effort went into trying to fit the German Army throughout Europe during the middle stages of WWII.

A Reliable Cog in the Mechanized Infantry machine
During the early stages of WWII, the Sd.Kfz. 251/1 half-track was greatly involved in the German success of the Blitzkreig style warfare. Seen carrying kinds of loads such as ordnance and equipment, the one often seen on many frontlines was the infantry carrier which could accommodate 12 passengers including the driver and commander. The half-track became reliable belonging as the feet for personnel to armored divisions. 1943 saw the debut of the Ausf.D variant which had a simple construction to improve productivity. Approximately 10,000 Ausf.D were produced and were used up until the end of the war.

The First Japanese Bulldozer
The Komatsu G40 was produced for the Japanese Navy during WWII and had the distinction of being Japan's first ever domestically-produced bulldozer. It was developed as a means to speed up airfield construction, which had up to that point been done by hand. Komatsu based its design on their existing farm tractor and it was equipped with a 50hp gasoline engine as well as a hydraulic dozer blade. About 150 were built from 1943 to the end of the war and they were sent to engineering units in the northern and southern fronts. It also influenced the design of postwar Japanese construction machinery.

The Sd.Kfz.251 half-track was Germany's answer for an armored vehicle with high mobility and could provide units with supplies when necessary. Able to haul equipment and weaponry as well as drive on rough terrain, the Ausf.D was perfectly suited for mechanized warfare and was at the center of Germany's forces. In 1941, several of the Sd.Kfz.251/1 Ausf.D was equipped with NbW41 28/32cm rockets and utilized as a mobile rocket launcher nicknamed the "Stuka zu fuss," a reference to the Stuka dive-bomber of the Luftwaffes. When fully assembled, this 1/48 scale model measures 128mm long.

During the late 1970s, the US military decided to replace many mission-specific type vehicles such as the M151 MUTT and M561, with a standard 4x4 vehicle. As a result, they designed a vehicle that was reliable, versatile, and had excellent off-road mobility. The vehicle was comprised of an aluminum body and steel frame. It also featured a 4-wheel independent suspension, and 150hp V8 diesel engine. These versatile vehicles were used for a wide variety of tasks such as cargo/troop transporter, ambulance, and armament carrier. The armament carrier was equipped with either a Mk. 19 grenade launcher or a M-60 machine gun. U.S. forces were issued these vehicles in 1985. The 4x4 vehicles were first used in Panama in 1989.

Palm-Top Blitzer
The Panzer II Ausf.A/B/C variants were the mainstay tanks of the German Panzer Divisions during the Blitzkreig operations of early-WWII. They were compact (4.8m long, 2.2m wide) tanks equipped with a 140hp gasoline engine, which enabled a maximum speed of 40km/h. Although they were lightly armed with only a 2cm main gun and a 7.92mm machine gun and even their frontal armor was a mere 15mm thick, they provided valiant service during the Polish and French campaigns when the German Army had a shortage of the more capable Pz.Kpfw. III tanks. In particular, many Pz.Kpfw. IIs which saw combat in France were modified with extra frontal armor plating.

The Russian heavy tank JS-2 was built to counter the German Tiger I. The JS-2, which was put into production in December 1943 during the latter half of WWII, had a long powerful 122mm gun and superior armor. From August, 1944 the hatch on the front glacis was deleted, which greatly improved its frontal protection. The JS-2 was produced in the Chelyabinsk Kirov factory (ChKZ), and they proved to be effective as "breakthrough" tanks as well as combating German armor.

The Matilda was developed as a heavily armored infantry tank and was the British Army's main tank in North Africa during WWII. She swept aside Italian opponents and was respectfully called the “Queen of the Desert” by German forces. During Operation Battleaxe to lift the siege of Tobruk in June 1941, German forces famously used their 88mm AA guns in the anti-tank role as they were the only effective counter against Matildas which could be found. The Matilda has written her name into the history books as a highly effective tank which continually proved her worth during many fierce battles throughout North Africa.

The Flakpanzer IV Mobelwagen is a self-propelled anti-aircraft with Panzer IV chassis, equipped with 3.7cm Flak43 guns. The Flakpanzer was equipped with 4 large armored plates that when lowered to 60-degrees would enter an anti-aircraft position. It could be lowered completely, allowing for an undistracted view of targets. A total of 240 Flankpanzers were produced and deployed to the Western Front against Allied bombers.
