UP wanted to simplify this system and commissioned their own development department to design a new locomotive that could pull a 3,600 t train (up to a maximum of 4,200 t) up the steep pass. The 25 Big Boy locomotives were built in 2 groups. The first group, called Class 1, was built from 1941. The second group (Class 2) was built in 1944. The last freight train hauled by a Big Boy engine was in July 1959. Most Big Boy were decommissioned in 1961. Developed in 1943, the Tiger II, also known unofficially as the Königstiger, went into series production at Henschel in 1944. The Königstiger combined the requirements for armor protection and firepower in an outstanding manner. The front armor, up to 150 mm thick, could not be penetrated by shells from the on-board guns of enemy main battle tanks. The hull sides were armored up to 80 mm thick.
