Developed by the American aircraft company McDonnell Douglas the F-4 Phantom II is a tandem two-seat, all-weather, supersonic fighter-bomber. It entered service during the sixties and it is one of the most famous airplanes of the military aviation history. In the original project, it was specifically designed for U.S. Navy but it has been used by all U.S. forces and it obtained a significant commercial success around the World. The F-4E version, specifically developed for the U.S. Air Force, adopted a M61 Vulcan cannon in the nose and it could be armed, to perform air-superiority missions, with AIM-9 Sidewinder and AIM-9 Sparrow air-to-air missiles. Derived from the illustrious anti-submarine helicopter HSS-1 "Seabat" which was produced by the American Company Sikorsky from the mid-1950s, came the HUS-1 Seahorse. Developed to perform a tactical transportation role, the helicopter, robust and reliable, was widely used from 1957 by the United States Marine Corps. It was able to transport 16 fully equipped soldiers or 1,300 kg of supplies and other materials. Due to its Wright R-1820 Cyclone piston engine the Seahorse was able to attain a maximum speed of 200 Km / h. It was also deployed by the U.S. Army (designated H-34) in South East Asia in an armed close support role equipped with 7.62 M60 machine guns. The multirole Tornado is a twin-engine combat aircraft with a variable-sweep wing. The Saab Viggen fighter has been, for years, the backbone of the Swedish Air Force. The first AJ 37 Viggen has been developed to be a multi-role combat aircraft able to perform air defense, anti-ships and ground attack missions. Later on, in order to increase the effectiveness in the Swedish air defense system, the JA-37 "Jaktviggen" version was developed. It has been equipped with a new set of avionics, radar and weapon system able to enhance its role of all-weather fighter-interceptor aircraft. In terms of design the Viggen was characterized by the adoption of the delta-canard aerodynamic solution and it was powered by the big and powerful Volvo RM8 afterburning turbofan. The Boeing F/A-18E Super Hornet is a modern twin-engine, carrier-capable, single-seat fighter directly derived from the original design of the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet. Larger and heavier than its predecessor, it is characterized by significantly improved flight and combat performance. Noticeable evolutionary design changes can best be seen in the revised wing-shape which is able to ensure maximum performance, particularly in terms of maneuverability. Additional design improvements can also be seen in the newer intake ramps for the engines, and also in the enhanced tail design. The aircraft originally entered service with the United States Navy in the early 2000’s to replace the F-14 Tomcat, with the primary role of fleet air defense. Based on the design of the previous single-seat radial engine fighter Curtiss P-36, the Curtiss P-40 has become one of the most famous and used aircraft of the Second World War. Between 1941 and 1944 he also played a key role in many operational theaters from North Africa to Italy, from China to the South Pacific. Characterized by a very robust and reliable aerodynamic structure, the Curtiss P-40 was equipped with an Allison V-12 engine, capable of delivering more than 1,150 HP. Thanks to it, the Curtiss P-40 was able to reach the speed of 580 Km / h. It served as air superiority fighter and fighter bomber. One of the most successful version was the P-40E. Used by U.S. fighter squadrons and, as Kittyhawk , by Commonwealth Air Forces, the P-40E was heavily armed with six 12.7 mm. M2 Browning machine guns installed in the wings. The LTV A-7 Corsair II was designed and implemented in the first half of the 1960s to satisfy the specific United States Navy request to have a new carrier-capable light attack aircraft able to replace the Douglas A-4 Skyhawk and the piston-powered Douglas A-1 Skyraider. It was directly developed by the fighter Vought F-8 Crusade airframe. The A-7 was characterised by the large frontal air intake under tha cabin, by the 35° foldable swept wing to optimize the use and the storage on the aircraft carriers flight decks and by the adoption of a modern Head-up-Display to enhance the operational effectiveness. Starting from the C.R. 32 "Freccia" success proved by a great reliability and operational efficiency during the Spanish Civil War, the Italian manufacturer Fiat developed, in the late ‘30s, the new C.R. 42 "Falco". The new biplane single-seat fighter had - as its predecessor - the fixed landing gear and the open cabin but was equipped with important innovations such as the alloy and steel frame covered by canvass and metal panelling. Thanks to Its supercharged air-cooled Fiat A.74 radial engine the Fiat C.R. 42 was able to reach 400 Km / h. It had an extraordinary manoeuvrability, much appreciated by the Italian pilots, but suffered the "biplane" configuration limits. The McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle design was initiated in the 1970s to equip the United States Air Force fighter squadrons with an advanced and high-performance jet fighter. The effective and robust aerodynamically design lay-out led to production of the two-seat “all-weather” F-15E Strike Eagle fighter-bomber. Entering into service with the USAF in the late 1980s and replacing the outdated F-111, its operational roles included ground attack, bombing and interdiction missions. It retained the flight design characteristics of the original F-15 such as the two tail drifts, sturdy mid-wing and tandem two-seater cabin, in the rear of which was the Weapon Systems Officer. The Messerschmitt Bf 109 is undoubtedly one of the best-known fighters of the Second World War and is considered an iconic aircraft of the German Luftwaffe. The Junkers Ju 87 Stuka was a two-seat dive-bomber/ground-attack aircraft. The Stuka first flew in 1935 and made its combat debut in 1936 as part of the Condor Legion during the Spanish Civil War . The aircraft was easily recognizable by its inverted gull wings and fixed landing gears. The Stuka's design included several innovative features, including automatic pull-up dive brakes under both wings to ensure that the plane recovered from its attack dive even if the pilot blacked out from the acceleration. It became soon the icon of the German “Blitzkrieg” during the first stages of the Second World War providing the air support to the Wehrmacht Panzer Divisions. It was used by Luftwaffe during the Battle of Britain where it shown its weaknesses compared to the faster and well-armed modern fighters as Hurricane and Spitfire. The Opel Blitz was the main truck used by German forces during the Second World War. It was deployed extensively on all fronts in huge numbers, and was consequently considered to be the “working mule” of the Wehrmacht. Thanks to the sturdy frame, the robust system of rigid axles with leaf springs and the twin-wheels on the back, the Opel Blitz was able to carry a payload of over 3 tons. The 3,600 cc. engine was easy to maintain and provided 75 hp. The Lockheed U-2 is one of the best known high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft in the history of aviation and an icon of the Cold War. The development of the aircraft was approved in the early 1950’s with the first flight in 1955. The U-2 was characterized by its large wing area and wingspan. The development of the North American FJ-2 Fury was the result of a request from the United States Navy and the United States Marine Corps for the provision of a carrier-capable version of the F-86 Sabre swept-wing fighter. The carrier-capable aircraft of the period still used a straight-wing design which made them inferior to the feared Soviet swept wing Mig-15, which was extremely manoeuvrable and with a high operational capability. Production of the Fury began in 1952 with the required structural changes for take-off and landing on aircraft carriers. To maximise on-board carrier space the plane utilised folding wings, had a longer nose and reinforced landing gear. Thanks to its General Electric J47 jet engine, the Fury demonstrated good flight performance and a top speed of 1,086 km / h. It was armed with 4 Colt Mk 12 guns installed in the nose. The subsequent version, the North American FJ-3, was equipped with a new engine and provided even better operational performance. The Hawk T Mk 1 was developed by Hawker Siddeley, today part of BAE Systems, to equip the Royal Air Force training units in the second half of the 1970’s. The Royal Air Force specific requirement was to have a new updated jet trainer to replace the old Folland Gnat. The advanced-trainer Hawk was characterized by a great maneuverability and thanks to its Rolls-Royce Adour turbofan engine was able to reach the max speed of Mach 0.84. The Hawk T1A, developed on the original Hawk T1 project, intended to replace the Hawker Hunter in the Royal Air Force’s Tactical Weapons Units. In fact, the original aircraft has been modified with the adoption of a centerline Aden 30 mm. gun pod and with the possibility to carry AIM-9L Sidewinder air-to-air missiles. Designed by the celebre engineer Mario Castoldi, the Macchi MC 200 has represented a significant production evolution of the Italian fighter aircrafts. Compared to the biplanes Fiat CR 32 and Fiat CR 42 that were the main Italian fighters squadrons structure at the beginning of the Second World War, the Macchi MC 200 distinguished itself, together with its contemporary Fiat G50, for its monoplane configuration and for the entire metallic airframe structure. The 14 radial cylinder Fiat A.74 RC 38 double star engine was able to release 840 HP and allowing the Macchi Mc 200 to reach speeds of 500 Km/H. In comparison with the Allied fighters, it resulted to be underpowered and, neither the less, a lower fire capacity. Two 12,7mm Breda-SAFAT machineguns mounted over the characteristic engine bulged nacelle, were the only onboard armament available. In the latest versions, two additional 7,7mm Breda-SAFAT machineguns were incorporated in the wings. It has been deployed by the Regia Aeronautica on the main Second World War fronts: Africa, Mediterranean Sea, Balkans and in Russia. The Dassault Mirage III represents a landmark in French aerospace production. Produced from the early 1960s to equip units of the Armée de l'Air, it proved to be extremely effective right from the start. It quickly became a commercial success and was exported to numerous countries, participating in various conflicts during the 1970s and 1980s. Characterized by its distinctive delta wing, it was capable, thanks to its Snecma Atar engine with afterburner, of exceeding Mach 2 speeds. Following the Mirage IIIC, designed for the interceptor role, a multirole and ground-attack version was developed. This led to the Mirage IIIE, characterized aerodynamically by a lengthening of the fuselage to accommodate improved avionics.
