The U.S. Navys first super-fighter, the F-14, was developed partially on the basis of experience gained with the F-111, a multi-role plane designed by General Dynamics, the Navy version of which, the F111B, was built by Grumman. The F-14A first flew on 21st December 1970, and production-line models started reaching squadrons in 1973. Squadrons VF-1 and VF-2 accompanied the last voyage of the aircraft carrier Enterprise in Vietnam, yet never saw combat. The Tomcat would not see action until 1981, when it shot down two Libyan Su-22s during an encounter over the Gulf of Sirte. Since then the F-14 has been updated several times and has taken parts in various conflicts in the Middle East (Iran-Iraq war, 1st and 2nd Gulf War), as well as in operations over the former Yugoslavia and minor skirmishes over the Mediterranean. The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 was one of the best airplanes designed during World War II. With over 20,000 units produced from 1941, together with the Messerschmitt Bf 109, it was the Luftwaffe’s most famous fighter. The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 A-8 was equipped with a BMW 801 D-2 two star radial engine, with 14 1,700 Hp cylinders, which allowed it to reach a maximum speed of 653 Km/h. It was heavily armed with 2 MG 131 machine guns and 4 MG 151 20 mm cannons. Production of the A-8 version began in the first months of 1944, characterised with an injection system able to increase engine power, for brief periods, to over 1,900 Hp. From 1944 until May 1945 in all the Focke-Wulf factories, more than 6,500 190 A-8 models were constructed, to face the ever more frequent allied air raids. In Italy, a similar version is produced on license by Agusta Westland under the designation AB-212. The AB-212 is a medium, two-blade rotor powered by two Pratt & Whitney PT6T turbo shaft power turbines providing 1.342 Kw. It is a development of model 205, the main difference being an elongated fuselage. In the first half of the 2000s, the AB 212 was massively updated to enhance its operational capacity. It has been fitted with two 7,62mm swivelling machine guns on the tailgates, and the defensive equipment has been upgraded with antimissile flare launchers and additional ceramic and kevlar armour to protect the crew. Italian AB 212s with this upgraded configuration are employed since 2006 in Afghanistan, in the International Security Assistance Force mission. Specifications Model Dim. 36 cm

This large twin-engine plane was built for the U.S. Air Force for troop support and anti-tank missions. Despite its extensive amour and armament the A-10 is highly maneuverable which is particularly important to overcome enemy anti-aircraft fire. The Thunderbolt (also called “Warthog”) was practically built around its remarkable 30 mm gun GAU-8, which can perforate tank amour with its special high performance ammunition. The aircraft was widely used during the Gulf War, where it successfully destroyed a few hundred Iraqis vehicles with minimum losses despite the heavy enemy defense of conventional and missile fire power. A.10 Around the mid-2000s, the A-10, updated to "C" standard, has been improved to be in line with the changed and evolved operational needs. It was designed to operate on the front line and to perform anti-tank, anti-helicopter, assault and close support missions in “all weather” conditions and in any operating environments. The AH-64D Longbow is the upgraded version with and increased offensive capability and the adoption of advanced target acquisition systems. The “Longbow” is characterized by the AN/APG-78 radar, housed in the radome located above the main rotor. It raised position enables target detection and use of missiles, as the anti-tank Hellfire, while the helicopter is hidden behind hills, trees or buildings and out of enemy sight. Designed by the celebre engineer Mario Castoldi, the Macchi MC 200 has represented a significant production evolution of the Italian fighter aircrafts. Compared to the biplanes Fiat CR 32 and Fiat CR 42 that were the main Italian fighters squadrons structure at the beginning of the Second World War, the Macchi MC 200 distinguished itself, together with its contemporary Fiat G50, for its monoplane configuration and for the entire metallic airframe structure. The 14 radial cylinder Fiat A.74 RC 38 double star engine was able to release 840 HP and allowing the Macchi Mc 200 to reach speeds of 500 Km/H. In comparison with the Allied fighters, it resulted to be underpowered and, neither the less, a lower fire capacity. Two 12,7mm Breda-SAFAT machineguns mounted over the characteristic engine bulged nacelle, were the only onboard armament available. In the latest versions, two additional 7,7mm Breda-SAFAT machineguns were incorporated in the wings. The first Ju-87B units arrived in the summer of 1940 and went to equip the 96º Gruppo Bombardamento a Tuffo. The Ju-87, either in the B2 version or in the extender range R2 version, equipped other “Gruppi di Volo” for a total of 150 planes. The H-21 Shawnee helicopter is best known for its nickname "the flying banana", which derives from the peculiar upward angle of the aft fuselage. The fuselage, uniquely designed in this novel way, was developed to accommodate the two powerful tandem rotors and the oversized propellers. As a result of the two rotors and the strong aerodynamic structure, the H-21 became an effective and reliable “workhorse”, able to successfully perform the most demanding transport tasks in a multitude of environments. Widely used by the U.S. Army since the early ‘50s, it was also deployed during the Vietnam war to transport troops and tactical supplies from 1961 onwards. The helicopter proved to be robust and reliable, even during ground support missions where the ‘Gunship’ version was armed with cannons under the nose or through the side doors. It was also used by French troops in Algeria, with an MG 151 cannon fitted on the right door and a .30 calibre weapon on the left. Tornado can load and use a powerful and varied set of offensive weapons. Thanks to its two powerful afterburning turbofans, the Tornado can reach the max speed of Mach 2.2. The Tornado baptism of fire took place in 1991 during the Gulf War. More in detail, the air campaign of the Gulf War, in which the Italian Tornados IDS took part, began on 17th January. The Boeing F/A-18E Super Hornet is a modern twin-engine, carrier-capable, single-seat fighter directly derived from the original design of the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet. Larger and heavier than its predecessor, it is characterized by significantly improved flight and combat performance. Noticeable evolutionary design changes can best be seen in the revised wing-shape which is able to ensure maximum performance, particularly in terms of maneuverability. Additional design improvements can also be seen in the newer intake ramps for the engines, and also in the enhanced tail design. The aircraft originally entered service with the United States Navy in the early 2000’s to replace the F-14 Tomcat, with the primary role of fleet air defense. Deployed with an increased mission range and the adoption of improved avionic systems, it is one of the more effective carrier-based fighters. Starting from the C.R. 32 "Freccia" success proved by a great reliability and operational efficiency during the Spanish Civil War, the Italian manufacturer Fiat developed, in the late ‘30s, the new C.R. 42 "Falco". The new biplane single-seat fighter had - as its predecessor - the fixed landing gear and the open cabin but was equipped with important innovations such as the alloy and steel frame covered by canvass and metal panelling. Thanks to Its supercharged air-cooled Fiat A.74 radial engine the Fiat C.R. 42 was able to reach 400 Km / h. It had an extraordinary manoeuvrability, much appreciated by the Italian pilots, but suffered the "biplane" configuration limits. It was able to successful engage the Gloster Gladiators but it was soon outclassed by faster and heavily armed monoplanes as the Hawker Hurricane and the Supermarine Spitfire. The eight 7.7 mm Browning machine guns, which equipped it , guaranteed a good firepower. Although it was slower and more antiquated, for aerodynamic design, then the famous "colleague" with whom it shared the operational engagement during the Battle of Britain, however, was more robust, cheaper and easier to maintain and repair.
