The real U.S.S. Ticonderoga CV-14 was an Essex-class aircraft carrier named in honor of the capture of Fort Ticonderoga during the American Revolutionary War. She was the fourth U.S. Navy ship to carry the name and earned five battle stars during World War II. Later modernized with an angled deck, Ticonderoga continued serving through the Cold War and Vietnam War, earning three Navy Unit Commendations, one Meritorious Unit Commendation, and 12 battle stars for Vietnam service.
Ticonderoga also played a role in America’s space program. In 1972, she recovered the astronauts from Apollo 17, the final crewed mission to the Moon. This combination of World War II service, Cold War modernization, Vietnam combat operations, and NASA recovery duty makes the U.S.S. Ticonderoga one of the most interesting aircraft carriers to add to your model fleet.
