North Carolina was the first of the Navy’s modern fast battleships and entered the Pacific in 1942. She helped protect U.S. aircraft carriers during the Guadalcanal campaign and went on to serve across the Pacific theater. The ship supported major operations in the Solomon Islands, Gilbert Islands, Marshall Islands, and beyond. During her World War II service, U.S.S. North Carolina earned 15 battle stars and participated in every major naval offensive in the Pacific theater. Today, the real battleship is preserved in Wilmington, North Carolina, as a National Historic Landmark and memorial to more than 11,000 North Carolinians who gave their lives during World War II.
