The Lockheed U-2 is a reconnaissance aircraft that was used extensively by the United States during the Cold War, notably for observing Soviet territory. Having been modernized, it remains in service, with its retirement scheduled for 2026. The
U-2's main characteristic is its ability to fly at high altitude (70,000 feet, or approximately 21,300 meters, twice the altitude of commercial airliners) to remain beyond the range of anti-aircraft defenses. It has a significant range but a relatively limited speed.
Technically, the U-2 could be considered a "powered glider" due to the very high aspect ratio of its wings, similar to that of gliders. While rumors circulate about a wooden wing structure, Denis Jenkins, in WarbirdTech, Volume 16, mentions a monocoque aluminum structure for the fuselage, three wing spars, and an aluminum truss. Similarly, Bernard Millot, in Docavia 29 on Lockheed aircraft, mentions an all-metal construction.
