Bismarck went on two major overseas cruises, the first in late 1878 to late 1880, which saw the ship visit South American ports and patrol the Central Pacific, where Germany had economic interests but no formal colonies at that time. During this cruise, she interfered with Samoan internal affairs and protected German interests in South America during the War of the Pacific.

North Sea Trawler From Newfoundland to Norway, the European fishing fleet is in action around the clock every day, battling the elements and the unforgiving seas. On a three-week fishing trip, the trawler devotes only about one week to fishing, with the remaining two weeks needed for travel to and from the fishing grounds. At 42,343 tons, the Bismarck was the largest and most modern battleship in the world (along with the Hood) in her day. On May 24, 1941, in a naval battle together with the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen, she sank the largest British battle cruiser, the Hood, with the 5th salvo of her 38-cm guns at the pack ice limit off Greenland. Launched at Blohm & Voss in Hamburg on February 14, 1940, she was, together with the identical Tirpitz, the most modern ship and the prestige object of the German navy. At 251 meters long, the top of the mast reached 52 meters above the water surface. A total of 17,450 tons of steel were used for armor protection. The newly designed heavy artillery fired 800 kg projectiles up to a range of 34.2 km, penetrating 350 mm armor up to 21 km. While the Prinz Eugen received no hits in the May 24 engagement, the bow-damaged Bismarck set course for a French port. During the subsequent pursuit by British ships and aircraft, the ship was shot out of action by numerically superior forces of Home Fleet after a torpedo hit the steering gear on May 27, 1941, and sank in the Atlantic some 800 km off the French coast. Of 2,092 men on board, 115 survived. Launched at the Birkenhead shipyard of Cammel Laird on the 13th April 1937, H.M.S. Ark Royal was involved in the sinking of the German Battleship Bismarck. Later she was torpedoed by the German Submarine U-81. At 06:13 hrs. on 14th November 1941, she went down, with only one sailor losing his life. One of the Town Class Batch 3 cruisers, the Belfast saw action at the Battle of the North Cape in World War II, as well as protecting the Artic convoys and taking a major role during the D-Day landings. After being refitted and seeing action in other conflicts including the Korean War, she is now preserved and anchored in the River Thames near to Tower Bridge in London. In 1625, while Sweden was busy building an empire around the Baltic Sea, the Swedish King Gustavus Adolphus ordered new warships. Among them was the Wasa. On its maiden voyage in 1628, the Wasa set sail and fired a salute. But only after a few minutes of sailing the ship began to heel over. She righted herself slightly - and heeled over again and, to everyones horror and disbelief, the glorious and mighty warship suddenly sank. The most powerful battleship in the world in 1941 when she sailed to raid Allied shipping in the North Atlantic with the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen. After being spotted by the Royal Navy she was shadowed and then engaged. In this engagement the Bismarck sank HMS Hood. She was then damaged by at least one torpedo from attacking Swordfish, slowing her down. She was eventually sunk by torpedoes fired from Royal Naval ships with the loss of almost 1,900 crew. Following its operational successes during WW1, the Italian “Regia Marina” continued with further post- war developments into various underwater and surface assault vehicles. The Motoscafo da Turismo Modificato (M.T.M.) for example, was designed to ensure a covert and rapid approach to targets with a low risk of detection from enemy forces. Closing in on the target, the pilot then adjusted the rudder to maintain direction and propelled the fast small boat on a collision course to the target. The pilot, positioned at the stern, jumped from the craft at a safe distance before the collision. The high explosive charge positioned in the bow of the Barchino detonated upon impact against the target. The most successful deployment of the ‘Barchino’ by the Italian Regio Marina, was the assault led by Luigi Faggioni on the Royal Navy heavy cruiser HMS York at Suda Bay, Crete in 1941.
