The AH-1G Cobra attack helicopter was developed by company Bell as part of the program to create a specialized attack helicopter. In the fall of 1967, it began to be used in Vietnam, where demonstrated its high combat qualities. To defeat ground targets, AH-1G helicopters used both built-in weapons – a six-barreled machine gun or grenade launcher – and suspended: units of unguided missiles, suspended machine guns, and later – a six-barreled 20 mm gun. Its firepower allowed hitting even armored targets. Over time, the AH-1G received a number of improvements, including measures to counter surface-to-air missiles with thermal guidance. For this, cooling of the engine exhaust gases was used, in addition, a special pipe was installed on the helicopters, which diverted the hot gases upwards, into the plane of rotation of the main rotor. After the end of the war, AH-1G Cobra helicopters continued their service in units stationed in Western Europe.

The CH-54A heavy helicopters in Vietnam were mainly used for transport and occasionally for carrying the M-121 high explosive bombs. These bombs were modified with an extended nose fuze to detonate about 3 feet above the ground, effectively clearing forests for helicopter landing sites.
One notable operation involved a CH-54A helicopter from Phu Bai Air Base, also known as Camp Hochmuth, in central Vietnam. The US Armed Forces started operating this base in 1963, initially as a communications radio station. The base later hosted US Marines, paratroopers, and special operations forces, and an airstrip was built using M8A1 steel airfield plates.
At one point, the airfield also accommodated US Marine Corps aircraft and helicopters. Despite frequent attacks by the Viet Cong, the Phu Bai base remained operational by the US military until the end of 1972.

The Sikorsky S-64E Skycrane is the civilian version of the CH-54A Tarhe heavy twin-engine military helicopter. The military variant was widely used during the Vietnam War to transport heavy cargo, from artillery guns to combat boats.
The S-64E features a six-blade rotor and two Pratt & Whitney engines. It has an all-metal fuselage and a three-seat crew cabin with two side-by-side pilot seats and a separate operator’s seat. The operator’s seat faces backward at a 180° angle, allowing monitoring of cargo through the transparent rear wall during loading operations.
This versatile helicopter performs numerous functions globally: rescue operations, firefighting for emergency services, construction work, heavy cargo transport, and timber harvesting.
Most S-64s have unique names displayed on their nose section. The aircraft has set remarkable records, including the highest horizontal flight altitude (11 km) and fastest climb rates to various heights (3, 6, and 9 km).

Helicopters Ground Personnel - Vietnam War
The Vietnam War is often referred to as the “Helicopter War,” a name that emerged as a result of their active participation in the armed conflict in Indochina. U.S. Army helicopters performed a wide range of different missions, including troop transportation, reconnaissance, fire support, cargo transportation, and search and rescue of downed aircraft crews. A large number of ground personnel, including technicians, mechanics, and weapons specialists, were involved in the maintenance and repair of the helicopters. They were engaged in scheduled maintenance of helicopters, engines and weapons equipment. The technicians also eliminated malfunctions that occurred during combat missions, such as damage to the helicopter fuselage caused by ground fire.

In 1963, the United States announced a competition to develop an airplane for use in limited military conflicts. Its main tasks were to strike ground targets, provide direct air support to its troops, and provide forward surveillance and guidance. The winner of the competition in August 1964 was the project of North America, which was designated OV-10A and given the name Bronco in the armed forces. Combat testing of the aircraft in Vietnam began in the summer of 1968. The aircraft were used very intensively, thanks to their ability to be based on unprepared unpaved airfields and the short time required for re-flight. If necessary, these attack aircraft were able to appear over targets 15 minutes after receiving a request from ground units, and this distinguished them from jet combat aircraft. During combat missions, the OV-10As demonstrated high efficiency and good combat survivability, becoming a kind of benchmark for anti-guerrilla attack aircraft. The OV-10A Bronco’s combat operations continued after the end of the Vietnam War, and these aircraft were successfully used by air forces around the world.

The OV-10D+ attack and observation aircraft is a version of the OV-10A Bronco. The modification was carried out at the Naval Aviation Refurbishment Centre (NARF). The changes affected the engine, avionics, communications systems, airframe and cockpit equipment. One of the features of this modification was the installation of a new FLIR infrared system under the extended nose section, which also housed laser target designators. The tail beams were fitted with devices to protect against surface-to-air missiles. The advanced capabilities of the aircraft made it possible to perform a wide range of tasks, including ground target surveillance and guidance of attack aircraft, both during the day and at night. At the same time, the aircraft retained the function of an attack aircraft and could strike ground targets if necessary. OV-IOD+ aircraft were used by the US Marine Corps in Operation DESERT STORM in 1991.

The Ki-21 bomber was designed as an aircraft for long-range bombing missions, including over the territory of the Soviet Union from Japanese bases in Manchuria. Its serial production was started in 1938, the same year it was the combat debut of this aircraft. The Ki-21 bomber, also designated “Army Type 97 Heavy Bomber”, was a twin-engine all-metal monoplane with a crew of 6 person.
It had excellent aerodynamics, which allowed it to develop a high speed during the flight. The Ki-21-Ib variant aircraft was the second production modification of the Ki-21 bomber line and featured increased machine gun armament (including a tail machine gun point), partially protected fuel tanks and modified taillights. Bombers were produced by two factories – Nakajima and Mitsubishi.

The first production version of the Ki-21 bomber was the Ki-21-Ia. Deliveries of these aircraft to air units began in 1938. Soon the bombers were already involved in the “Japan-China incident,” which quickly turned into a full-scale war.
The Ki-21-Ia equipped air groups were engaged in active combat operations and bombed the territory of China. In spring of 1939, the Ki-21-Ia took part in combat operations on the Khalkhin Gol River, where their targets were Soviet units. Later, when Japan began warfare against the United States, U.S. Air Force pilots gave this bomber the name “Sally”.
After the appearance of more advanced models over time, the first modification bombers were transferred to flight schools.

Marston Mat refers to special metal planks used during World War II for the rapid construction of temporary airfields. They were also known as PSP (Pierced Steel Planking). These planks were made of steel, could withstand heavy loads, and allowed for the installation of a stable and durable airfield surface for various types of aircraft on soft or unstable ground. The planks had a perforated design, which allowed water to drain easily without compromising the quality of the surface.
The Marston Mat was first used during maneuvers in North Carolina in November 1941, near Marston, which is where the name originated. Marston Mat was widely used in operations across the Pacific, North Africa, and Europe. With their help, engineering units of the U.S. Army and Navy were able to quickly construct airfields, for example, measuring 1500 by 45 meters, in just a few days. After the war, these planks were widely used for civilian purposes, including the construction of temporary roads and platforms.

During World War II, the United States swiftly organized mass production of military vehicles across various classes and purposes. American vehicles gained widespread adoption in both US and allied forces due to their simple, refined, and practical design. A notable example was the three-axle Studebaker US6, launched by the Studebaker Corporation in 1941. This robust vehicle offered high payload capacity, with about 200,000 units manufactured across thirteen variants—including the US6-U3 truck and US6-U5 fuel tanker. Chevrolet (then a part of General Motors Company) also produced military two-axle trucks. Their Model 7117 was an all-wheel drive vehicle with a 1.5-ton payload capacity, featuring a metal cabin and a transmission-powered mechanical winch. Battle of Malta
Due to its strategic location in the center of the Mediterranean Sea, the island of Malta became the scene of intense fighting. Malta gained particular importance during the Second World War, serving as a crucial base for the British Royal Navy. Winston Churchill would later state, “Never was so much owed to so few… Malta’s strategic value had never been greater than during the last war.”
As early as June 1940, Italian aircraft began bombing the island. Fierce aerial combat took place over Malta, involving, among others, Italian Fiat CR.42 Falco (“Falcon”) fighters and British Sea Gladiator Mk.II biplanes. The Fiat CR.42 was the main fighter aircraft of the Regia Aeronautica during the early period of WWII. Produced at the Fiat plant in Turin from February 1939 to June 1944, a total of 1,782 aircraft were built.
The Gloster Gladiator, in turn, was the last British biplane fighter. It was operated by the RAF, the Royal Navy (from both carriers and land bases), and the air forces of several other countries. The defenders of Malta used the Sea Gladiator Mk.II variant, which featured a three-bladed propeller, lifeboat housing, and an arrestor hook for carrier landings (the hook was removed on land-based aircraft).
